Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara urges kindness, civility to end political division
TORONTO – Pop musician Sara Quin says social media has 'tragically torn the world to shreds' in recent years, and it's time people consider ways to reestablish a more positive sense of community.
The Calgary-raised performer, who's part of the duo Tegan and Sara, says while she's certain some have found 'beautiful connection online,' she fears it's done more to 'ruin the world' and stoke political divisions.
Quin was joined by her twin sister Tegan at Toronto's Departure Festival for a conversation about the Tegan and Sara Foundation, which they created in 2016 after the election of U.S. President Donald Trump. The foundation offers financial support to grassroots and community-based organizations such as youth summer camps, and helped create an LGBTQ+ health care directory.
The sisters say they want to back initiatives that help build stronger communities, something that's become even more important to them in their mid-40s.
Sara Quin says she used to subscribe to the mindset that it was better to 'silence, shun or push out' people who didn't agree with her views, but she found it only left her feeling isolated.
'We have got to be willing to listen to each other, make space for ideas and opinions that don't line up with ours, and figure out if there's a consensus,' she said Wednesday.
'I just want to see people be civil with each other,' she added.

BALTIMORE (AP) — 'King Henry' finally has the attention of 'The Waterboy.' Baltimore Ravens star running back Derrick Henry has an offer from Adam Sandler, his favorite actor, to be cast in a movie if the five-time Pro Bowl selection rushes for 2,000 yards this season. The offer grew out of Henry's appearance on radio personality Dan Patrick's show this week to discuss his $30 million, two-year contract extension. Patrick told Henry he would get him in a Sandler movie if he made NFL history with a second 2,000-yard season. Two days later, Sandler made the offer himself in a video shown to Henry on the practice field. 'That's my dawg,' a wide-smiling Henry said while watching the video. Sandler, star of 'Happy Gilmore' and the remake of 'The Longest Yard' along with 'The Waterboy,' said he was in a hotel room while filming his greeting for Henry. At one point, Sandler turned the camera to show his bulldog. 'Two thousand yards-plus this year not only gets you in a movie, but we'll have a nice dinner together and talk about Dan Patrick's facial hair and how hard it is for him to grow it,' Sandler joked in a video posted Friday. 'I love ya and keep it up.' Sandler came up during Patrick's interview with Henry because Patrick was hearing a hoodie for the soon-to-be-released 'Happy Gilmore 2.' Sandler had given Patrick the hoodie. 'Can you do me a favor?' Henry asked Patrick. 'If you ever see him again, tell him I'm a really big fan and would really love to meet him one day.' Patrick left Sandler a voice message — and Sandler responded. Spruce Meadows celebrates 50th anniversary by getting its closeup in limited edition Marvel comic
President and CEO Linda Southern-Heathcott, along with Ron Heathcott, Manager of Health, Safety, and Sustainability, unveils the first collectible comic book cover featuring X-Men characters Storm, Wolverine, and Jean Grey, on the Spruce Meadows grounds. Horse culture is meeting comic book culture in a new collaboration between Spruce Meadows in Calgary and Marvel Comics. The Calgary institution revealed the first of four collectible covers Friday on the opening day of its new event Epic Weekends, running alongside the 'Continental' presented by Rolex. The comic book features iconic X-Men characters including Alberta-born Wolverine, Beast, Storm and Jean Grey. The issue is called The Spirit of Spruce Meadows and it blends thrilling action with Spruce Meadows' rich history, throwing in a few comic twists along the way. Spirit of Spruce Meadows The limited edition Marvel comic features familiar X-Men characters as well as the history of Spruce Meadows. (Spruce Meadows) The various collectible covers will debut at summer tournaments scheduled for June and July at Spruce Meadows: the Continental, National, Pan American and North American. Marvel-themed posters will also be unveiled at each event, with comics and posters available free to the 500 guests per day at each tournament. Spruce Meadows will also be celebrating a Marvel-themed Father's Day event next Sunday, June 15.
