Crete fires: 1500 people evacuated as fast-moving blaze threatens popular Greece tourist destination
The fire at popular tourist destination Crete broke out on Wednesday afternoon and was quickly was fanned by gale force winds.
Homes were damaged as flames rushed through hillside forests, lighting up the night sky and sending plumes of ash into the air.
More than 1500 people have been evacuated, with 200 moved to shelter in an indoor sports arena.
The fire now stretches over 6km according to emergency services.
More than 150 firefighters and 38 engines and water trucks were deployed, according to the Greek fire brigade service. More services are on the way.
Nektarios Papadakis, a civil protection official, told Associated Press the fire was a 'difficult situation' and 'is very hard to contain'.
'Right now they cannot contain it,' Mr Papadakis said.
'The tourists who were moved out are all okay. They have been taken to an indoor basketball arena and hotels in other regions of the island.'
The smoke travelled as far as Makry Gialos beach, more than 10km from the origin of the fire in Achlia.
Three sites were ordered to evacuate in the island's south coast.
Localised mobile phone evacuation alerts were sent out to residents.
Firefighters were also called to a blaze on the island of Kythira and another in the northern region of Halkidiki.
There are no reports of serious injuries, but some residents were treated for breathing difficulties.
All hospitals in Crete have been placed on alert as the situation develops.
The fire comes amid a deadly heatwave across Europe and follows several wildfires in Spain's Catalonia region.
Greece had been on high wildfire alert since late last week and a fire had already swept through the coastal towns of Palaia Fokaia and Thymari near Athens.

To be honest, I'm a somewhat reluctant participant in the 'Passport to Greece' cooking class. We're in the Culinary Centre on board Oceania Allura's maiden voyage and I've been invited to join as a media guest (classes are free for passengers). As a former food-magazine editor, I'm assuming rather snootily that there's not going to be much I can learn on board a cruise ship. Of course I'm wrong. As soon as we start making an eminently quaffable Metaxa ginger spritz, I mistakenly add the ginger beer to the cocktail shaker, risking a minor explosion. Chastened, I concentrate more closely on American chef Noelle Barille's instructions and, after a fun couple of hours, come away with a new repertoire of dishes, including melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant dip), Corfu pastitsio (undercook the pasta if you're preparing ahead of time) and what must be the world's easiest dessert – strained Greek yoghurt with toasted walnuts and fragrant local honey. I shouldn't be surprised at Noelle's level of expertise. Oceania Cruises' tagline is 'the finest cuisine at sea', and it delivers on that promise across the board, including at its 10 restaurants and cafes.

Wildfires kill at least three and displace thousands across southern Europe
Athens, Greece: Wildfires have intensified across southern Europe, with a round-the-clock battle to protect the perimeter of Greece's third-largest city and at least three deaths reported in Spain, Turkey and Albania. Outside the Greek port city of Patras, firefighters struggled to protect homes and agricultural facilities as flames tore through pine forests and olive groves. Tall columns of flames rose behind apartment blocks on the outskirts of the city, while dozens of vehicles were torched as flames swept through a nearby impound lot. 'Today is another very difficult day with the level of fire risk remaining very high across many parts of the country,' Fire Service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakoyiannis said on Wednesday, Athens time. At least 15 firefighters were hospitalised or received medical attention for burns, smoke inhalation or exhaustion, he added. As water-dropping planes and helicopters swooped overhead, residents joined the effort, beating back flames with cut branches or dousing them with buckets of water. Firefighting resources were stretched thin in many affected countries as they battled multiple outbreaks following weeks of heat waves and temperature spikes across the Mediterranean region. On the Greek island of Chios, exhausted firefighters slept on the roadside following a night-long shift. Aircraft rotated between blazes on the western Greek mainland, the Patras area and the island of Zakynthos. Athens also sent assistance to neighbouring Albania, joining an international effort to combat dozens of wildfires. An 80-year-old man died in one blaze south of the capital, Tirana, officials said on Wednesday.
