Tata Harrier EV enters production ahead of delivery commencement; rakes in 10,000 bookings on first day

Tata Harrier EV is the latest electric car from the homegrown auto giant. The electric SUV which comes as not just a mundane electric car but promises a sportscar-like performance, has entered the production. Also, Tata Motors has claimed that it has raked in 10,000 bookings on the very first day after its booking commencement. The automaker has also announced that deliveries of the Harrier EV will begin from this month only. The Tata Harrier EV is built on the OEM's advanced architecture. Tata Harrier EV shares its core platform with its internal combustion engine (ICE) powered sibling, albeit in a re-engineered, electric vehicle-specific form. The electric SUV is available in two drivetrain configurations: Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Quad-Wheel Drive (QWD). The RWD version uses a single motor positioned on the rear axle, while the QWD variant comes equipped with dual motors—one on each axle—for enhanced performance and traction. In terms of performance, the RWD version of the Harrier EV delivers 235 bhp and 315 Nm of torque via its single motor. The QWD setup, with dual motors, significantly boosts output to 391 bhp and 504 Nm. Customers can choose between two battery pack options. The standard 65 kWh battery delivers a MIDC-certified range of 538 km per charge. Meanwhile, the larger 75 kWh battery offers an extended range - 627 km in RWD and 622 km in QWD guise, as per MIDC test figures. The Harrier EV gets an array of modern features and technology. It comes with an all-digital instrument cluster, a high-end Samsung Neo QLED infotainment screen developed with Harman, and an immersive audio experience powered by Dolby Atmos. A 540-degree camera system ensures superior visibility around the vehicle, particularly useful in tight spaces or complex parking situations. Additional highlights include a digital inside rearview mirror (IRVM) and a unique transparent hood view function, which aids navigation over rugged terrain by displaying the ground directly beneath the car.

China-EU trade row: Beijing bans European firms from major medical bids; says Brussels must end ‘discriminatory' practices

Representative image China on Sunday imposed a retaliatory ban on European companies bidding for large-scale medical equipment contracts, intensifying a simmering trade dispute with the European Union. The move comes just days after the EU restricted Chinese firms from participating in government medical device procurements over €5 million, citing Beijing's long-standing exclusion of European products from its public tenders. According to a statement by China's finance ministry, EU-based firms, excluding those with established European capital operating within China, will now be barred from participating in Chinese public procurement orders exceeding 45 million yuan ($6.3 million), reported AFP . The ban covers an extensive range of products, including surgical instruments, medical machinery, and prosthetics. Additionally, Beijing has stipulated that for tenders involving non-European firms, the proportion of EU-origin products in their bids cannot exceed 50 per cent. This marks the latest salvo in escalating trade tensions between the two economic powers. While Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi made diplomatic visits to EU headquarters, France, and Germany last week to ease frictions, longstanding issues persist, notably the $357.1 billion trade deficit between the EU and China. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription! Techno Mag Learn More Undo The European Commission's earlier restrictions on Chinese firms were justified as a response to what it described as 'exclusionary and discriminatory measures' imposed by Beijing. Brussels claimed that nearly 90 per cent of medical procurement contracts in China systematically excluded EU products. China, in turn, criticised the EU's move as a demonstration of 'double standards' and insisted that it had expressed willingness to resolve disputes through dialogue. 'China has repeatedly expressed, through bilateral dialogue, its willingness to resolve these disputes appropriately,' the commerce ministry said. This escalation follows recent frictions over electric vehicles and alcohol imports. On Saturday, Beijing began enforcing anti-dumping tariffs of up to 34.9 per cent on European brandy, mostly affecting French cognac makers, citing unfair pricing practices. Companies like Jas Hennessy, Remy Martin, and Martell face steep levies unless they adhere to agreed minimum price levels. French President Emmanuel Macron described China's partial exemption of some firms as a 'positive step,' though French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot warned that 'several major issues remain unresolved,' particularly the exclusion of certain producers from the exemptions. The European Commission, however, continues to oppose Beijing's actions, with trade spokesman Olof Gill stating, 'We believe that China's measures are unfair... unjustified... and inconsistent with international rules.' The disputes over EVs, medical devices, and now brandy underscore a broader conflict around industrial subsidies and market access. China has maintained that its actions are a legitimate response to EU protectionism and has lodged complaints with the World Trade Organisation. With a China-EU summit scheduled for later this month to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations, hopes for resolution remain. However, Beijing may cancel the second day of the summit, as per Bloomberg. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students. Mamata govt's lack of data-driven discourse leads to Bengal DA crisis

With the West Bengal government failing to meet the deadline for paying 25 per cent Dearness Allowance (DA) arrears to the state government employees by the midnight of June 27 as directed by the Supreme Court, economists and insiders from the system said the basic flaws lie in the lack of data required for calculating the accurate dues and payout from state exchequer. The first flaw, according to economists, is a persistent lack of clarity in the formula applied for calculating or determining the DA rates for state government employees, both in the context of the previous 5th Pay Commission and in the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission. Had the state government followed the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI) as the benchmark for calculating and determining DA for the state government employees, such a lack of clarity could have been easily overcome by now, economists feel. AICPI is followed as the benchmark for determining the DA rates by the Union government and most state governments. Nationally, AICPI is the accepted formula for this purpose. However, the West Bengal government is not agreeable to accepting AICPI as the benchmark in fixing the Dearness Allowance rate for its employees. Hence the lack of clarity and data-driven discourse continued, which ultimately resulted in conflicts between the state government and its employees. Currently, the West Bengal government employees receive Dearness Allowances at the rate of just 18 per cent, as against 55 per cent received by their counterparts in the Union government and even many other state governments. With the Supreme Court deadline of June 27 at midnight for payment of 25 per cent DA arrears to the state government employees already over, the West Bengal government has already made a plea to the apex court seeking six months of additional time for paying the same. Secondly, the exact number of beneficiaries in the state government, who were supposed to benefit from this Supreme Court order, as well as the category-wise breakup of beneficiaries, is not at all clear as of now. Naturally, with the lack of clarity in the numbers under these two heads, there is also a lack of clarity and data-driven discourse on the payout from the state exchequer for each category and subsequently the total payout under all the categories combined. Already, confusion has surfaced over the pressure on the state exchequer to pay the 25 per cent DA arrears to the state government employees as directed by the Supreme Court. While one section within the state finance department claims that the payout will be a little over Rs 10,000 crore, another section quotes the figure to be slightly less than Rs 12,000 crore. Economists said that had there been enough clarity in the data under the heads mentioned above, this confusion would not also have arisen. Economists also feel that the hush-hush approach of the West Bengal government in portraying the actual arithmetic on this count has resulted in this lack of clarity and data-driven discourse. For a long time, the state government had not even made the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission, the latest, public. The recommendations were made public only after a single-judge bench of Calcutta High Court directed the state government to do so. While passing the order the single- judge of Justice Amrita Sinha observed that since Pay Commission documents were not included in the classified category, maintaining such secrecy in the matter by the state government was unnecessary. As regards the members of the state cabinet including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, all have maintained a brooding silence in the matter. On the issue of dearness allowance, the Chief Minister just said once the state government would move as per law.
