Premier League club in row with council over proposed housing near stadium
Chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said the club will make formal objections to the city council's plans to allow for homes to be built in what had been a buffer zone around the stadium.
Sunderland City Council has proposed that 600 homes, including maisonettes, townhouses and family homes, should be built south of the stadium, as part of a wider redevelopment of the city centre.
Sunderland City Council chief executive Patrick Melia has insisted that the stadium was a 'key asset for the city' and the redevelopment plans would enhance fans' experience.
Former chairman Sir Bob Murray, who oversaw the move from Roker Park to the 49,000-seat ground in 1997, called the change a 'disgrace'.
He said the local authority had previously agreed protections which would prevent development near the stadium, thus allowing the club to increase capacity if needed, but that the city council had 'torn them up'.
Sir Bob said having houses up close to the Stadium of Light risked hemming it in, which was the cause of the move from Roker Park.
Mr Louis-Dreyfus has now spoken out against the plans as well.
He said: 'As the custodian of Sunderland AFC, it is my duty to safeguard the future of our club.
'This includes the Stadium of Light – the beating heart of our city.
'Unfortunately, Sunderland City Council has recently taken steps relating to the Sheepfolds development that could have catastrophic operational consequences on our club and, by extension, our community.
'We are under no illusion that the city needs a more appropriate housing provision and support those endeavours fully.
'However, later this week we will be submitting a formal objection against the proposals relating to the Sheepfolds and I encourage all city stakeholders to come together and join us in protecting the future of our football club and the City of Sunderland.
'Together, we have limitless potential, but it will only be realised through delivering on a shared purpose and vision.'
There were fears that having homes close to the stadium could impact its ability to host major concerts as well as block any future expansion plans.
The Stadium of Light has hosted England games and was built on the site of the former Monkwearmouth Colliery.
In response to the objections, council chief Mr Melia said: 'We are very much invested in the future of the Stadium of Light and recognise it as a key asset for the city.
'It is our view that the proposals set out for the Sheepfolds neighbourhoods will improve operations and fan experience in terms of match days and other events and we remain committed to working with SAFC in relation to their plans for the expansion of the Stadium of Light – we have held many discussions with Mr Louis-Dreyfus and his team to this effect.
'This consultation process provides a real opportunity for the public and stakeholders to share their thoughts with us as the local planning authority and we will consider all views and comments prior to determination of the application.'

Viktor Gyokeres gave three three-word remark after Ruben Amorim made his team-mates cry
Viktor Gyokeres is set to be reunited with his former Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim on Sunday when Arsenal travel to face Manchester United on the opening weekend of the Premier League Viktor Gyokeres insisted there were 'no hard feelings' when Ruben Amorim decided to abandon Sporting CP midway through last season. Amorim made the switch from the Jose Alvalade Stadium to Old Trafford in November last year while Sporting were still top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Gyokeres was left to spearhead the team without the manager that brought him to the club and, despite a rocky initial period, helped the side defend their league title and won the Taca de Portugal. Last month, Gyokeres followed his former boss to the Premier League, but opted to join rivals Arsenal over Amorim's Manchester United. The Swedish striker's £64million fee means he arrives with huge expectations to perform under Mikel Arteta as the Gunners look to go one better than their second-placed finishes over the past three seasons. As if Gyokeres' debut coming on Sunday against United at Old Trafford wasn't enough pressure, all eyes will be on his performance against the team and manager he effectively rejected. Amorim will know all too well of the threat the 27-year-old poses, as Gyokeres scored his first goal in an Arsenal shirt during the pre-season win over Athletic Club last weekend. Gyokeres' comments came despite his agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, previously stating Amorim was the main reason his client joined Sporting two summers ago. Cetinkaya also revealed that a number of Premier League clubs were interested in signing the Sweden international last summer following his outstanding breakthrough season, but Gyokeres opted to stay due to Amorim remaining in charge. His soft stance on Amorim's exit may have also been a subtle indication that he was already planning his own exit, while his more distraught team-mates knew they'd be staying put. That, along with his agent's comments, mean it comes as no surprise that he too decided to leave this summer. Teenager and Labrador victorious in dog-agility competition
A teenager from Lancashire is thrilled to have earned a place in the final of a prestigious dog-agility competition, after she and her Labrador triumphed in the semi-final last from Lancaster, and Bee - whom she trained herself, came first in the Intermediate ABC (Anything But Collie) Kennel Club Agility Stakes, securing a place at the final in London in 15-year-old and her three-year-old dog completed the course - consisting of jumps, weaves and tunnels - in the fastest time, with no faults, beating 29 other dogs and their handlers."I was really shocked to have won, as I never thought we would qualify - let alone win the semi-final," said Jenna. Jenna has been involved in dog agility since she was six, training with her mum's Labrador and Cocker Spaniel. "Bee is my first agility dog that I have trained myself," she said."She always tries her very best for me and loves agility."Jenna and Bee will now compete against 10 dogs and handlers - both intermediate height and large height dogs - in the ABC final at the London International Horse Show on 19 December. Competitors from across the UK and overseas showcased their agility skills, weaving through poles, soaring over jumps and darting through tunnels, at the Rutland Showground in Oakham last were more than 250 competitions at The Kennel Club International Agility Festival, bringing together dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds at the world's largest dog agility Kerfoot, chief canine officer, said: "A huge well done to Jenna and Bee on their impressive performance and win.
