Jorge Costa death: Tearful Jose Mourinho pays tribute to former Porto captain

'Jorge was one of these guys I used to say 'clean the garbage' and let the coach do his job as a coach and not as a leader of the dressing room.
'That's perfection for a coach when the captain does this work. Of course I'm very sad, but let's forget football.

'Of course I am very sad but I'm here because if he could speak with me now he would tell me, 'Come on, do your press conference and tomorrow play the game and win mister. Forget about me'.
'That would be Jorge. So that's what I am going to try to do. Do my job today, do my job tomorrow, and then cry after.'
Costa was a senior Porto player for 15 years between 1990 and 2005 and made 324 appearances for the club.
As well as the Champions League, Costa won the UEFA Cup and eight Primeira Liga titles at Porto. He retired in 2006 after spending the final year of his career at Standard Liege in Belgium.

Costa won 50 caps for Portugal and spent a season on loan at Charlton in the Premier League in 2001-02.
Porto posted on X: 'Jorge Costa has left us. One of us, a leader, a captain, a role model. A symbol of FC Porto. Thank you for being FC Porto until the end. Goodbye, Jorge Costa.'
Former Charlton boss Alan Curbishley said: 'He was a fantastic person who always got his point across.
'Everyone respected him because of his ability. He was a great lad.'

Glenn Hoddle has named the 'team to beat' in the Champions League and overlooked holders Paris Saint-Germain. PSG clinched their first ever Champions League trophy last season, thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final. Hoddle insists PSG under Enrique are a 'serious team' but views Liverpool as the 'team to beat' in Europe, especially if Arne Slot gets a couple more transfer signings over the line. The Premier League champions have spent £250m so far this summer and remain interested in big-money moves for Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi. Asked who will emerge as PSG's biggest rival for the Champions League trophy this season, Hoddle told TNT Sports: 'For me, we're all hearing the same thing about Liverpool in the transfer market. 'If those deals so happen, wow, they will have some squad. So I would say Liverpool might be the ones to beat. 'If they get who they're tying to get, I think they will go very close in Europe. They're a very good sign now, never mind about the new signings. 'PSG are a serious team though and really well-balanced. That's why they will be one of the favourites to go back and win it but in any sport, winning a title is one thing but retaining it is very, very difficult.' Ex-England star Karen Carney, meanwhile, declared Barcelona as PSG's biggest rival in the Champions League. The La Liga champions reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season before losing to Inter Milan in heartbreaking circumstances. 'Barcelona's Achilles heel was just the defensive mindset last season but going forward they had absolutely everything,' she said. 'PSG will respect that and Barcelona could push them. PSG are full of quality, they're only just come back from their summer break. 'They're the ones to beat for me. It would be great if the English teams can bridge the gap but I still have my eye on that Barcelona team because if they sort out the defence they could push these guys.' Despite watching his Tottenham team concede two late goals and then lose the penalty shootout, Frank was able to take a number of positives from the Super Cup defeat. The former Brentford boss took over at Spurs earlier in the summer after the sacking of Ange Postecoglou. 'I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time,' Frank said. 'We had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal, then of course the momentum shifted a little bit. Spurs squander late two-goal lead before Super Cup shoot-out defeat to PSG
Champions League winners PSG, who only returned to pre-season last week following their Club World Cup exploits in July, produced a stirring response with Kang-in Lee pulling one back with five minutes left. Substitute Goncalo Ramos forced spot-kicks when he headed home in the fourth-minute of stoppage-time to stun the north London club. It was initially advantage Tottenham in the shoot-out when Vitinha missed PSG's first kick but it was followed by Van de Ven and Mathys Tel failing to score their penalties as Luis Enrique's men triumphed 4-3 on spot-kicks despite a fine display on Frank's competitive debut. This fixture marked Romero's first official match since being appointed Spurs captain, following Son Heung-min's departure, and he lined up in a back-three as Frank immediately stamped his authority. Tottenham edged the opening stages before PSG attacker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia dragged wide to provide a reminder of his talent. Chances remained limited until Richarlison let fly from 20 yards but PSG debutant Lucas Chevalier – preferred to Italy's Gianluigi Donnarumma – tipped over. Mohammed Kudus, on his first start since a summer switch from West Ham, almost tested Chevalier again only for Marquinhos to come across to make a crucial block. A second nearly followed but Kudus' stabbed effort hit the post to ensure it stayed 1-0 at half-time. Three minutes into the second half and Frank watched Spurs grab a second. Another set-piece did the trick as Porro picked out the unmarked Romero at the back post and his header into the ground slipped through the hands of Chevalier in a moment he would want to forget in the homeland of Donnarumma. Cristian Romero doubled Spurs' lead (Adam Davy/PA) Kevin Danso sent another effort into the side-netting in the 52nd-minute before Luis Enrique went for broke. Last-ditch defending by Romero thwarted one chance before Van de Ven slid in to deny the lively Desire Doue. PSG had the ball in the net after 66 minutes but Bradley Barcola's strike was disallowed for offside in a move which saw Danso produce a heroic block to prevent Fabian Ruiz from scoring after Vicario had saved from Doue. Tottenham continued to be pinned back and, not long after Djed Spence blocked an effort by Dembele, PSG reduced the deficit. PSG clinched the trophy (Adam Davy/PA) Substitute Lee arrowed an effort into the bottom corner with five minutes left to set up a nervy finale. Eventually the pressure told as Achraf Hakimi slipped in Dembele, who crossed for Ramos to head home the leveller in the fourth minute of stoppage-time. Spurs were left crestfallen but gained two early advantages in the shoot-out when captain Romero called correctly to ensure spot-kicks were taken in front of their fans and when Vitinha sent his effort wide. When Rodrigo Bentancur scored, Tottenham were 2-0 up but Van de Ven was denied by Chevalier and Tel fired off target to allow Nuno Mendes to tuck away the winning spot-kick.
