Great Wall of China trek raises £85k for Dove House Hospice in Hull
A group of people who trekked along the Great Wall of China have raised more than £85,000 in support of a hospice.The team took on the challenge to fundraise for Dove House Hospice, which is a charity that provides respite and end-of-life care for people in Hull and East Yorkshire.The hospice warned they were facing a funding shortfall in April due to rising costs.Singer Ruth Scott, from Hull, said she took part in the walk because the charity provided "incredible care" for vulnerable people and their families.
Dove House costs about £11m a year to run, but the charity only receives about £1m in statutory funding. The rest of its funds are raised by the community.Twenty people signed up for the site's latest fundraising challenge and set off for China 17 May, walking a 31-mile (50km) route along the Great Wall.Upon her return, Ms Scott said: "It's not an easy walk, incredibly steep in places, a lot of the wall is rubble."The views are just unbelievable. Chelsea Flower Show garden donated to Devon charity
A homelessness charity in Devon has been given a garden which featured at the Chelsea Flower was selected to have the Pathway Garden once the show had finished on 24 May and a team has begun to install it in garden was inspired by the work of UK-wide homelessness charity Pathway and was selected for two awards at the 2025 flower show. Shekinah CEO John Hamblin said he was "incredibly proud" the charity was chosen to have the garden. Built by Modular Garden Limited, the company said it was sustainably designed with the help of people who had experience of garden won the Silver Gilt medal and the Environmental Innovation Award at the show which took place between 20 and 24 May. The garden will form part of a permanent community space at Shekinah in Plymouth thanks to a grant from Project Giving Back, which supports charitable causes through gardens at the flower show. "We are incredibly proud to be part of this inspirational project," said Mr Hamblin. "The Chelsea Flower Show offers a national platform to raise awareness of homelessness and health and inequalities and celebrate the journeys of those rebuilding their lives and health with dignity and purpose."This partnership truly reflects what Shekinah is all about."

Skydive to fund domestic violence refuges in the Black Country
The boss of a Birmingham-based IT firm is jumping out of an aircraft to help a local charity build 10 safe houses for families fleeing domestic Bayliss, CEO of Hubtel IT, is doing a skydive in support of Black Country Women's Aid's The Key to a New Life comes after the charity said it was forced to turn away over two thirds of requests for refuge last year, although those people were offered other support. Mr Bayliss, 47, will take to the sky from 14,000 feet at Langar Airfield in Nottingham on 21 June, joined by 10 staff members from the charity and two colleagues from Hubtel - Julian Brettle and Mike Leach. The CEO of Hubtel, which provides cyber-security services for the charity, said: "The terror I feel when I think about doing this is brought into sharp perspective by the reason we're doing it. "Domestic abuse affects so many people, and unlike our skydive, it takes place behind closed doors when no-one else is looking."Black Country Women's Aid's work to highlight it and help victims is critical. Leaping from a plane is the least we can do to support them."Sara Ward, CEO of the charity, said: "When Black Country Women's Aid was first established nearly 40 years ago, it was with a refuge. "Since then, our services have grown to meet local people's needs, but refuge remains at the heart of what we do."These new flats will provide safe and secure spaces from where families can heal together and rebuild their lives." Phyllis Tuckwell thanks volunteers for decades of service
A hospice service in Surrey is using Volunteers Week to thank people who have donated their time, some for more than two Tuckwell has sites in Guildford, Farnham and has 653 volunteers, who fill 91 different roles across the Week runs from the 2 to 8 June, with the aim of encouraging more people to offer their services to their communities. Roles range from working in the hospice's shop to providing physiotherapy and complementary therapy, or simply sitting with patients and talking with year, Phyllis Tuckwell organises long service Morpeth, voluntary services manager, said: "This year, we will be celebrating the fantastic contribution of 50 of our volunteers, who have supported us for the milestones of 5, 10 and 20 years."We'd like to say a huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers, whose support is so very much appreciated."Without you, we simply wouldn't be able to provide our vital care - so thank you."
