Retired civil servants lose over RM20mil to scammers
KUANTAN: Over the past three years, online scams saw 302 retired civil servants in Pahang losing more than RM20mil, the state assembly heard.
State consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Sim Chon Siang said in 2022, 85 retirees were cheated, incurring losses of over RM8.9mil.
In 2023, 102 retirees were duped with losses totalling RM3.7mil while 115 victims recorded losses amounting to RM8.9mil last year.
'From 2022 to 2024, 5,658 other individuals were also cheated through online scams with total losses reaching RM120mil,' he said during the assembly sitting yesterday, Bernama reported.
He was responding to a question from appointed assemblyman Datuk Wong Tat Chee, who asked how many people in Pahang had fallen victim to online scams in the past three years and the total losses involving retired civil servants.
Meanwhile, state agriculture, agro-based industries, biotechnology and education committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Soffi Abd Razak said the state government has implemented the Pahang Hybrid School pilot project in six schools under the Education Ministry's Digital Education Policy.
He said each school was allo–cated five classrooms, bringing the total number of classrooms involved to 30.
The schools selected for the project are SM Abdul Rahman Talib and SM Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom in Kuantan, SM Seri Jengka (Maran), SM Padang Saujana (Jerantut), SM Sulaiman (Bentong) and SM Agama Kuala Lipis (Lipis).

Recalling the incident, Muhammat Ridzuan said he received a phone call from Nur Arfiqah's brother informing him about the tragedy. 'I was stunned. But even though I was sad, I will accept this test from Allah,' added Muhammat Ridzuan. Meanwhile, the mother who lost four children in the road accident said she had asked them not to visit their uncle on that day. Zaini Noh, 52, who is the mother of Nur Arfiqah and her siblings, said her motherly instinct made her feel that something untoward was going to happen. Hence, she advised her four children and son-in-law to cancel their plans to spend Hari Raya Aidiladha at their uncle's house in Jerantut. 'I could not go because I was unwell. I told them not to go as my husband and I will not be going,' Sinar Harian quoted her as saying. Couple and siblings killed in Jerantut road crash laid to rest
BOTA: The remains of five victims who perished in a two-vehicle crash at Km7, Jalan Jerantut-Maran, Pahang, yesterday were laid to rest in a single grave at the Kampung Selat Muslim Cemetery in Bota Kanan here early today. The bodies of Mohamad Ikmal Ishak, 26, and his wife Nur Arfiqah Aziz Jaafar, 23, along with Nur Arfiqah's younger siblings—Mohammad Zulkifli, 21, Mohamad Azizul Hakimi, 19, and Nurul Hazwani, 17—were transported from Jerantut, Pahang, and arrived at the Bota Kanan Jamek Mosque for funeral prayers at about 12.30 am. Perak State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah was also present at the mosque. A somber atmosphere enveloped the cemetery during the burial, which was attended by family members, relatives, and friends. All five victims were laid to rest at 1.45am. Earlier, Jerantut District Police chief Supt Zukri Muhammad confirmed the incident involved a Perodua Bezza and a Toyota Alphard at around midnight yesterday. – BERNAMA

Indonesia's FM calls for stronger Asean mechanisms after Vision 2045 adoption
JAKARTA/MANILA (Bernama): Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono has called for strengthening Asean's institutional mechanisms, including its diplomatic corps and central bodies, to effectively implement the Asean Community Vision 2045 adopted at last month's summit in Kuala Lumpur. At a meeting with the Committee of Permanent Representatives to Asean (CPR) and Timor-Leste's Ambassador to Asean at the Foreign Ministry here, he praised the progress achieved through Asean's cooperation frameworks, especially after the adoption of the Asean Community Vision (ACV) 2045. He said the long-term vision, adopted at the 46th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur last month, outlines a strategic roadmap for the next two decades, envisaging a resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centred Asean. "We need to strengthen Asean mechanisms, including the CPR, and bolster the Asean Secretariat and Asean Headquarters in Jakarta to optimise our potential in addressing challenges within the region and globally,' he said. Sugiono also underscored the CPR's role in fostering community building, facilitating cross-pillar coordination, and engaging with Asean's external partners, as it is essential to achieving the goals of ACV. He further welcomed Timor-Leste's upcoming accession as Asean's eleventh member state later this year. - Bernama
