Two northern KZN road accidents claim nine lives, tertiary hospital treats multiple injured patients
KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Nomagugu Simelane has expressed her sympathies to the families of those killed and hurt in two weekend accidents, including those of departmental staff members who were involved in a crash.
An accident at 1am on Sunday on the highway between Richards Bay and Empangeni involved two doctors employed at Ngwelezana Hospital and a relative of one of the doctors.
Simelane said the medical officer who died worked in the department of anaesthesia. The other doctor sustained serious injuries and is receiving care at Ngwelezana Hospital.
The Empangeni hospital also mobilised resources to respond to a crash on the N2 at 6am on Sunday, involving a tow-truck and a light delivery vehicle.
According to a preliminary report, the collision, which occurred on the N2 northbound after the Mthunzini Toll Plaza, involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-100 light commercial vehicle transporting 24 members of the Zion Christian Church.
Eight people were killed, with the injured receiving treatment from the hospital's emergency medical unit.
'Fourteen patients have since been discharged, three remain admitted, and two were taken to theatre for urgent life-and limb-saving procedures. Six patients are now under assessment at the emergency medical unit,' said Simelane.

Speaking on the Department's KZN Health Chat multimedia programme recently, Simelane said the Department is intensifying efforts to bring health services closer to men, who are often reluctant to access them. 'As the Department of Health, we are encouraging men to change their mindset and realise that seeking help is not a sign of weakness,' said Simelane. 'We are really urging them to come to our clinics, Community Health Centres, and hospitals.' She said the reluctance of many men to seek healthcare has dire consequences. 'It's a known fact that men generally do not like to come to health facilities. Women do come, and so do girls. You can see that they grow up knowing it's normal to seek help. However, when it comes to men, and even boys, you can see that they don't want to come through, which makes it difficult for us to deal with various ailments that affect them.' Simelane warned that many men die prematurely from treatable illnesses simply because they delay seeking help. 'It is not uncommon for men to suffer from a severe headache, due to high blood pressure or a hypertensive crisis, and not seek help up until it leads to something as serious as stroke.' 'This is a good achievement when you consider that we didn't have a single one two years ago,' she said. 'These clinics don't only deal with issues such as erectile dysfunction. They address men's health needs holistically, including ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes, mental health, HIV, TB, cancer screening, and much more.' The goal this Men's Month is to encourage a mindset shift. 'We want men to know that there's no shame in coming to the clinic. We want to help before things get worse,' Simelane said. R59 million upgrade at RK Khan Hospital: a step towards modern healthcare

The 56-year-old hospital underwent waterproofing and internal renovations to Blocks D and E, and the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD). In a statement, Nomagugu Simelane, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, said she was satisfied with the progress made, which was over 400 days past the completion deadline. Many families in eThekwini and surrounding areas have turned to it in times of need. This new infrastructure will bring healing, dignity, improve staff morale, and create an environment that supports cutting-edge medical care,' he added. He said while delays were acknowledged, the oversight visit by the MEC was welcomed. 'We appreciate the oversight visit and accountability shown by MEC Simelane and the infrastructure team. Dr Imran Keeka, spokesperson on health for the Democratic Alliance, said: 'We note that the upgrade project is finally reaching conclusion despite being some 400 days over its original scheduled conclusion date of November 2023. The upgrades are finally reaching an end and this is commendable. The project delays have caused immense inconvenience to patients, staff and management of the facility. 'The nearby Clairwood Hospital has also had to step in and foster patients, with patients transferred there for admission on a daily basis, using vital Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) resources. 'The knock-on effect is that instead of local ambulances being available for emergencies, they were busy ferrying patients from one hospital to another,' he added. Keeka said the situation had also led to doctors having to do ward rounds to see patients at two different hospitals and where specialised services were only at RK Khan Hospital, patients were brought to and from the facility on multiple occasions.

During a briefing session, it emerged that what seemed like a roof repair undertaking that was meant to last five months ended up being an extended project as assessments showed that the walls and other structural aspects were severely compromised.
