Uttarakhand CM Dhami welcomes all devotees visiting Hemkund Sahib shrine
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], May 25 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed and extended greetings to all devotees visiting Shri Hemkund Sahib Ji shrine in the State.
In a post on X, CM Dhami shared, 'Whoever says this is happy, Sat Sri Akaal..! Hearty welcome and greetings to all the devotees coming from the country and abroad to visit Shri Hemkund Sahib Ji in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand.'
The first batch of Sikh devotees, led by the Panch Pyaras, commenced their journey to Shri Hemkund Sahib for the 2025 pilgrimage. The group departed carrying the Nishan Sahib (holy flag) under full police protection, Chamoli Police said in a post on X on Saturday.
In their message, Chamoli Police stated, 'Shri Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2025: The first group of Sikh devotees, led by the Panch Pyaras, has set out for Shri Hemkund Sahib with the Nishan Sahib and complete police security.'
The police have ensured comprehensive security arrangements to facilitate a safe and smooth pilgrimage for all devotees.
Following the departure of the first batch of pilgrims for Hemkund Sahib on Thursday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed devotees from across the country and the world, emphasising the state's commitment to a secure and well-managed pilgrimage to the revered Sikh shrine near Joshimath in Chamoli district.
The portals of Hemkund Sahib, situated at a height of over 15,000 feet above sea level, will open on May 25. The shrine is visited by lakhs of devotees every summer.
Addressing mediapersons as the first batch departed for the pilgrimage, CM Dhami said, 'The doors of Shri Hemkund Sahib will open on May 25. All the arrangements have been made for the devotees.'
'I thank PM Modi as the Government of India has approved the ropeway for Kedarnath and Shri Hemkund Sahib. The difficult journey will become very easy in the coming time. We welcome all the devotees coming from across the country and the world,' the Chief Minister added.
Uttarakhand Governor, Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd), also welcomed the devotees and expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister and other administration for preparing the arrangements.
'We see it as 'Atithi Devo Bhava'. I thank the Chief Minister, the administration, and the Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee for working so hard to make every devotee's visit successful,' the Governor said. (ANI)

Harsimrat urges Jaishankar to sensitise UAE on ‘kirpan' ban advisory
Bathinda SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Saturday appealed to external affairs minister S Jaishankar to sensitise the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government about the Sikh articles of faith, particularly regarding the wearing of the kirpan and kataar. Her appeal came in response to a recent advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in the UAE, cautioning Indian citizens against carrying sharp objects in line with Article 405 of the UAE penal law. The advisory has led to 'deep distress and mental agony' among Sikh residents and travellers, as the kirpan, a sacred article of faith, falls under the category of restricted items. In her letter, Badal cited increasing instances of Sikhs being detained or forced to remove their kirpan and kataar in the UAE. She referenced a recent case in which an elderly Sikh man was reportedly detained in Abu Dhabi for wearing his kirpan and turban, incidents she said have caused 'mental agony' to the global Sikh community. 'The kirpan is not a weapon of violence but a spiritual and symbolic emblem of justice and responsibility as mandated by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Denying Sikhs the right to wear their five kakkars, especially the kirpan, is a serious infringement on their religious freedom,' she said. Badal called on the ministry of external affairs to send a high-level delegation, including members of the National Commission for Minorities and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), to hold constructive dialogue with the authorities in the UAE and international agencies. The aim would be to sensitise them about Sikh beliefs and ensure respect for religious practices. She emphasised the positive contribution of the Sikh community globally, including in the UAE, and underlined that mutual respect for religious identity was essential in upholding India's values of pluralism and diversity.

The Government of India, in its social media fact-checking handle on platform X, clarified that the claims about an upcoming alleged 'demonetisation' in March 2026 were false and that they were an attempt to spread misinformation among the masses through social media platforms. According to the official PIBFactCheck post released on Tuesday, 3 June 2025, a video went viral on social media in which a news anchor from the YouTube channel 'Capital TV' claimed that India is set to discontinue the circulation of ₹ 500 banknotes effective March 2026. 'A #YouTube video on the YT Channel 'CAPITAL TV' (capitaltvind) falsely claims that the RBI will discontinue the circulation of ₹ 500 notes by March 2026,' according to the PIBFactCheck announcement post on platform X. Calling out this social media claim, the Indian government issued an official 'Fact Check' in which they said that the nation's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has made no such announcements about any potential or upcoming demonetisation move. The government also assured the people of the nation that the ₹ 500 banknotes 'have not been discontinued' and continue to serve as a 'legal tender' form of the official Indian currency. The government also warned people to stay alert to 'fake news' and videos circulated on social media platforms and not to believe anything unless it comes from official sources like the RBI. 'Don't fall for such misinformation. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it!' said the Indian government, warning people against similar misinformation circulating on social media platforms. In May 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that it would soon release new ₹ 20 banknotes with Governor Sanjay Malhotra's signature on them. 'The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue ₹ 20 denomination Banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series bearing the signature of Shri Sanjay Malhotra, Governor. The design of these notes is similar in all respects to ₹ 20 banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series,' said the RBI. RBI also disclosed that the ₹ 20 notes will be similar in all other aspects, including design, to the new series of notes circulating in the nation, except for the new governor's signature. The central bank also assured the people of the nation that all the banknotes which contain the denomination of ₹ 20 issued by the RBI in the past will continue to hold legal tender in India, according to the official release.
