said he 'felt helpless' for his younger self as he reflected on growing up in the spotlight.
The British Olympic diving gold medallist retired after the Paris 2024 Olympics, having first risen to fame at the 2008 Beijing Games aged 14.
'There's all kinds of things I didn't even know I should have tried to protect from a young age,' he told The Independent at the premiere of 1.6 Seconds, a documentary featuring unseen footage from his journey as a young teen.
'Maybe if it was growing up in this day and age and having social media, I might have had a little more control over what was released and the narrative.'

Cameron Norrie vs Jacob Fearnley: Score and latest updates from French Open

Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of Jacob Fearnley v Cameron Norrie in an all-British clash in the French Open third round. Fearnley faces Norrie for the first time but they share a similar path having both played college tennis at the same university in Texas. Fearnley is playing at the French Open for the first time, having enjoyed a rapid rise from outside the world's top 500 a year ago to being on the verge of the top 50 – despite having never played a professional match on clay before this year. He has taken two notable scalps at Roland Garros, beating veteran 2015 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka in straight sets before 22nd seed Ugo Humbert retired injured at 4-4 in the second set after the Scot won the first 6-3. 'It's an interesting one,' Fearnley said. 'I know Cam very well. We both went to TCU in America, although we didn't cross paths there. 'To see a guy coming out of the college I went to, it was just inspiring. It kind of showed me that it was possible, that the coaches at TCU and the work that he put in at TCU could get him to the Tour. 'He's done amazing things on the Tour. He competes so hard, fights every match, fights every point. You can see that he really leaves it all out there. So that's something that I admire.' Meanwhile, Norrie has fallen to 81 in the rankings but defeated Daniil Medvedev in the opening round and believes he has turned his run of form around. Former world number eight Norris said: 'I'm happy to be through and enjoying my tennis again. I feel like I have a really good game for the clay in general. 'I think it's down to, if I'm moving well and giving nothing away, I can be really difficult to beat.' On Fearnley's rapid rise through the ranks, he added: 'This is his first clay season and he has played unreal. It is going to be tough playing him.' The winner could face Novak Djokovic in the last-16, with the three-time French Open champion taking on Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic.

EastEnders' Natalie Cassidy claims huge pop star used to BULLY her at school and reveals awkward confrontation

Former EastEnders star NATALIE CASSIDY has claimed that Paloma Faith used to BULLY her at school. Actress Natalie, 42, who played Sonia Fowler on the BBC1 soap, made the shock confession about popstar Paloma, 43, who grew up in the same area of East London as Natalie, on her podcast Life With Nat. 3 3 She revealed: 'Paloma Faith, she bullied me at school. She went to Islington Green and was in the year above me. We've spoken about it and she has said sorry about that. Gutted.' Indeed, the pair both used to attend the same secondary school, now called the City of London Academy Islington. However, the Make Your Own Kind of Music hitmaker had a VERY different experience to Natalie at school, describing it as 'one of the best periods of my life'. She said: 'I had a really amazing experience. People were always criticising it but the teachers were just so brilliant. "It was really creative, with really great art, music and dance departments. I really enjoyed it.' We have reached out to Paloma Faith's representative for a comment. Natalie - who quit as EastEnders' Sonia Fowler in January more than three decades after her first appearance - recently suffered a huge blow. It was confirmed earlier this month that the BBC wouldn't be re-commissioning her podcast with Joanna Page. A spokesperson told The Sun: "What started as a six month project turned into more than a year of joyous TV chatter, and over 80 heart-warming episodes. "Thank you to Nat and Jo for their warm recommendations and insider analysis, and to the whole team for keeping listeners in the loop with what to watch. But it's not all bad news as Natalie has landed her own show with the broadcaster, titled Learning To Care. It will follow the actress as she fulfils her longtime ambition of wanting to train as carer.
