Packers receiver Bo Melton works out at cornerback after release of Jaire Alexander

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst believes the Packers have more cornerback depth than most NFL teams even after releasing two-time Pro Bowl selection Jaire Alexander. But that didn't stop them from exploring creative ways to boost that position as they opened their minicamp Tuesday. One day after the Packers cut ties with Alexander, wide receiver Bo Melton spent part of practice working out at cornerback. Melton, the older brother of Arizona Cardinals cornerback Max Melton, already has showcased his versatility with his contributions on special teams. 'We just thought that if there is somebody that can potentially do both, he would be that guy,' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. 'I think a lot of it is just from his production on (special) teams and just his ability to make plays on teams.' Melton has combined for 24 catches for 309 yards and one touchdown plus 11 carries for 75 yards over the past two seasons. He also had a touchdown in the Packers' 2023 NFC divisional playoff loss at San Francisco. Anything he could contribute on defense would help Melton distinguish himself in a receivers room that got crowded with the arrivals of first-round draft pick Matthew Golden and third-round selection Savion Williams. 'I think it's just something we're going to look at and see if it's a possibility,' Gutekunst said. 'There are very few guys who have done it in our league, there have been a few, and when a guy's able to do that, it certainly helps your football team.' Green Bay got accustomed to playing without Alexander when injuries caused him to play in just 34 of the Packers' 68 regular-season games over the past four years. He appeared in only seven games last season. Now the Packers know they won't have him at all. 'He's someone who definitely believed in me from the get-go when I got my opportunity. … It's tough to see him go,' quarterback Jordan Love said. 'I wish him nothing but the best, but right now, it's moving on and seeing what's next for our team.' The Packers' top three cornerbacks — Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine and Nate Hobbs — have 91 combined starts. Thirty-two of Nixon's 34 starts and all 19 of Valentine's starts came with Green Bay. Hobbs started 38 games with the Las Vegas Raiders from 2021-24 before signing with the Packers. 'Some guys don't even have two, (and) we've got three really good starting corners that we really like quite a bit,' Gutekunst said. 'Again, I think we have more depth than most.' But the only other Green Bay cornerbacks with any NFL playing experience on defense are Isaiah Dunn and Gregory Junior. Dunn played 114 defensive snaps for the New York Jets in 2021. Junior played 18 defensive snaps for Jacksonville in 2022 and 93 more in 2023. 'I think we know that three of those guys have gone out and played significant snaps, and then we've got a lot of young guys that are just kind of unknown,' LaFleur said. Gutekunst said there was no 'bad blood' regarding Alexander's exit and said the Packers made the move because of the 28-year-old's recent injury history. Alexander was due for a base salary of $16.15 million in 2025 and $18.15 million in 2026 as part of the four-year, $84 million contract extension he signed in 2022. Releasing him cleared about $17 million in cap space. 'I just think for what that amount of money is, I think that's a lot to pay for a guy who hasn't been able to get on the field,' Gutekunst said. 'Again, it's not his fault. It's just something that kind of transpired, so we just kind of were looking for something different.' NOTES: OL Elgton Jenkins was present for minicamp but wasn't practicing. Jenkins, who is moving from left guard to center this year following the offseason signing of Aaron Banks, hadn't attended the voluntary organized team activities. 'He's helping out and coaching the other guys right now,' LaFleur said. 'He's worked on the side, but we thought it was best to keep him out today. … Love said he's looking forward to the opportunity to match up with former Packers teammate Aaron Rodgers now that the four-time MVP has joined the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Packers play at Pittsburgh on Oct. 26. Love said the two of them have exchanged texts since Rodgers signed. '(I) told him that we're going to need to swap jerseys after the game,' Love said. … Love said that his wedding is 'coming up here soon, a couple weeks out.' Love is engaged to volleyball player Ronika Stone. 'It's been awesome,' Love said. 'We're excited.' ___ AP NFL:

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst explains why he released CB Jaire Alexander

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst held an impromptu session with reporters at Tuesday's mandatory minicamp practice and essentially said the team was paying cornerback Jaire Alexander too much money for how little he played in recent seasons. 'Over the last four years, there's been a lot of games missed,' said Gutekunst, who released his first-ever draft pick on Monday after seven seasons in Green Bay. 'I just think for what that amount of money is, I think that's a lot to pay for a guy who hasn't been able to get on the field. Again, it's not his fault. It's just something that kind of transpired, so we just kind of were looking for something different.' Why didn't the Packers take a gamble on Jaire Alexander staying healthy and keep him? Brian Gutekunst: 'Obviously we've done that the past few years and it hasn't really worked out for us.' — Matt Schneidman (@mattschneidman) June 10, 2025 Alexander, the No. 18 pick in 2018 who made two All-Pro second teams with the Packers in 2020 and 2022, missed 13 games with a shoulder injury in 2021 and 20 combined games over the last two seasons because of four different injuries. The Packers made Alexander the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history at the time in March 2022 with a four-year extension worth $21 million annually. He earned his second All-Pro nod the following season, but struggled to stay on the field in 2023 and 2024 while carrying a hefty price tag. According to Over The Cap, his 2025 cap number (about $24.6 million) would've been the third-highest on the team behind quarterback Jordan Love and defensive end Rashan Gary. Instead, the Packers free up about $17.1 million in cap this year and $19.5 million next year by releasing him, per OTC. According to a source, the Packers are applying the full dead cap hit of more than $17 million in 2025 instead of spreading it out over multiple years. The Packers didn't absolutely need to release Alexander for cap reasons — they ranked 12th in the NFL with about $29 million in cap space, per OTC, before the move — but Gutekunst still pulled the trigger. Why not gamble on your best cornerback staying healthy since the Packers could technically afford to? Advertisement 'I think obviously, we've done that the past few years and it hasn't really worked out for us,' Gutekunst said. 'I think as we went through it, we went through a lot of different angles that might be right for the club and this is kind of where we ended up. Again, it was no bad blood. It was just kind of one of those things where over the last couple years, it hasn't worked out exactly like we'd wanted to, through no fault of anybody. Just the injuries kind of took some games away from him.' The Packers entertained the possibility of a trade this offseason, but a deal involving Alexander never materialized. The team offered him a restructured contract, too, according to a source, but the sides couldn't agree on a deal. In the end, the Packers cut bait with one of their most talented players of the last decade, but one who simply wasn't available enough in recent seasons. Gutekunst added that he spoke with Alexander in person on Sunday before the release became official. Jordan Love on the Packers releasing Jaire Alexander: 'Someone who definitely believed in me from the get-go when I got my opportunity … it's tough to see him go.' — Matt Schneidman (@mattschneidman) June 10, 2025 The Packers now turn to new No. 1 cornerback Keisean Nixon. Or is it free-agent signing Nate Hobbs? Will third-year corner Carrington Valentine see significant snaps? And what about the depth behind them? Will Kalen King, Kamal Hadden or Gregory Junior be able to fill in adequately if need be come September? 'I feel really good, really good,' Gutekunst said about his cornerback group. 'Obviously, the three guys (Nixon, Hobbs and Valentine) combined have about 95 starts under their belt. I feel really good about that. We've got some young guys I'm really interested to see compete for those kind of final roster spots, but no, I'm excited about where that group is. The three guys have proven their ability in this league. I like their makeup, their toughness, their ability to play, their versatility, so I'm excited about that group.'

Packers' QB Jordan Love Excited To Face Old Pal Aaron Rodgers

The Green Bay Packers don't face the Pittsburgh Steelers for another 4 ½ months. But Packers quarterback Jordan Love can't wait. The Steelers signed Aaron Rodgers — who played his first 18 seasons in Green Bay — last Friday. And Love, who spent his first three seasons as the backup to Rodgers, is already excited to square off against his former teammate. 'It's going to be fun. It's going to be very fun,' Love said of the Oct. 26 matchup in Pittsburgh. 'I'm excited about that. 'I was excited just to hear about him finally signing with the Steelers and knowing we're going to face off, I think it will be very special for him obviously to be able to come back and play the Packers.' Rodgers won four MVP awards in Green Bay and led the Packers to a Super Bowl championship in 2010. Green Bay traded Rodgers to the New York Jets in April, 2023, where things went poorly for all involved. The Jets released Rodgers this offseason. Now, Rodgers and the Steelers will face the Jets in Week 1 and the Packers in Week 8. 'It's going to be a special game for him,' Love said of Rodgers facing the Packers. 'And you know, definitely … I want to get that jersey after the game, be able to swap.' Brett Favre faced the Packers four times in 2009-2010 when he joined the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings went 2-0 against the Packers in 2009, and Favre threw seven touchdowns and no interceptions in those two games. Rodgers and the Packers got some revenge in 2010, defeating Minnesota twice on their way to a Super Bowl title. Love and Rodgers were friendly as teammates, and Love will be excited to see his former mentor. 'We exchanged some texts, just congratulated him with that and same thing, told him that we're going to need to swap jerseys after the game,' Love said. 'He's excited about it.'
