Ramasamy claims trial to 17 CBT charges

BUTTERWORTH: Former Penang deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy was charged with 17 counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) today involving Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) funds during his time at its helm. Ramasamy, who was the PHEB chairman from 2010 to 2023, is accused of using RM859,131.29 in PHEB funds between May 2019 and February 2022 without obtaining the board's formal approval. Thirteen charges against the 76-year-old are linked to the procurement of a RM779,131.29 gold-plated Thaipusam chariot in 2019. Two charges are linked to RM65,000 in medical assistance to individuals, while two other charges are linked to RM15,000 in education sponsorships. Ramasamy pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out before judge Zulhazmi Abdullah at the sessions court here. The charges were framed under Section 409 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction. Bail was set at RM78,000. Lawyers Shamsher Singh Thind, Eng Yuh Pei, and Archana Chandrasekaran represented Ramasamy while Azura Zulkiflee and Nurnajihatul Idayu Azuyar prosecuted. Selva Mookiah held a watching brief for the PHEB. During mitigation, Shamsher said Ramasamy had cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) throughout the investigation process, including by paying a RM20,000 MACC bond when he was first arrested on May 12, 2024. Shamsher also said his client had not bothered anyone during the investigation or put anyone in PHEB under duress. 'The court must take his character, means, and standing into account. He is an Indian community leader without a title,' he said. KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities must investigate how a 25-year-old British national managed to trespass onto a construction site before falling into an elevator shaft. Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye questioned whether proper safety measures were in place, describing the incident as preventable. "The responsibility falls on the shoulders of the contractors and those managing the work site," he said. "Was there any signage at the site or a barricade? Were there any security personnel present? If they were on duty, they would not have allowed him to go through." He added that the company carrying out construction must conduct an internal investigation to prevent recurrence. Anyone who violates the regulation may be liable to a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both. On Thursday, the police confirmed that missing British backpacker Jordan Johnson-Doyle was found dead in an elevator shaft of a partially under-construction condominium in Bangsar here. A post-mortem showed that the cause of death was a chest injury due to a fall from height.

RM250,000 concrete drain completed at Lrg Semaba 7 to tackle flooding issues

KUCHING (June 7): The construction of a concrete drain at the T-junction of Lorong Semaba 7 has been completed at the cost of RM250,000, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap. He said the rural transformation programme (RTP) project had resolved long-standing drainage and flooding issues in the area. 'With the completion of this phase, residents in the neighbourhood can now look forward to improved water flow, reduced flood risk and better overall living conditions,' he said in a statement. He emphasised that the initiative is more than just a basic infrastructure upgrade. 'It is a commitment to ensure that every part of Kota Sentosa is not left behind in terms of infrastructure. Too many of our older residential areas still suffer from outdated or insufficient basic amenities. 'I am working tirelessly to correct that,' he added. Yap also revealed that the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has conducted survey and assessment works on the opposite side of the same T-junction, as well as another stretch of earth drains along Lorong Semaba 11. The proposed next phase will involve the construction of additional concrete drains, with a combined estimated cost of RM400,000, and MPP engineers are currently preparing the Bill of Quantities to move the project forward. Reaffirming his commitment to infrastructure development, Yap said he will continue to advocate for improvements under the RTP and other government allocations. 'Development cannot be concentrated in one area. As your elected representative, I will continue to press for improvements – street by street, lorong (lane) by lorong – so that all residents of Kota Sentosa enjoy the benefits of proper, modern infrastructure.' Yap also highlighted that his efforts are aligned with the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government's focus on inclusive development and narrowing the infrastructure gap, particularly in semi-urban and suburban communities. He emphasised that infrastructure is not just about roads and drains. 'It's about dignity, safety and improving the quality of life for the people I serve. Rep distributes RM147,000 in MRP grants to Bawang Assan NGOs

SIBU (June 7): Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has distributed RM147,000 in Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants to 14 recipients, comprising non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and associations within the Bawang Assan state constituency. This marks the first group of recipients to receive allocations for the year through the Bawang Assan Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Service Centre. 'We have over 100 recipients in total, with an overall allocation of RM2 million. The remaining grants will be distributed next week,' said Wong. He noted that the allocation is part of his ongoing effort to support community-based initiatives and welfare programmes, and that recipients who did not receive funds in this round may reapply in subsequent phases. Wong, who also serves as PDP senior vice president, stated that he receives an annual allocation of RM8 million from the Sarawak government for development and welfare initiatives in his constituency. This includes RM2 million under the Minor Rural Project (MRP), RM5 million for the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), and RM1 million for the Sarawak Poor Housing Improvement Programme (PPRMS).
