BlueBet fined for allowing man to gamble $700k despite ‘clear red flag behaviours'
A man who 'binge gambled' $40,000 in an 11-hour session was awarded VIP status by the bookmaker BlueBet and assigned a dedicated personal manager who encouraged him to keep betting and took a cut of his losses. A regulator has found it wasn't until the man had gambled $700,000 four months later and displayed multiple 'clear red flag behaviours' that BlueBet checked whether he could afford to be betting so much. The Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission (NTRWC), which regulates most online gambling companies in Australia, described Bluebet's conduct as 'unacceptable' and 'extremely concerning'. The regulator found that when the man complained about having run out of money to gamble, his VIP manager supplied him with bonus bets, deposit matches and placed funds directly into his account. Sign up: AU Breaking News email On one occasion, when the man's request for an inducement was initially declined, he requested his account be closed. Within two minutes, the VIP manager had placed $500 of bonus bets into his account. The man had already lost $4,000 that day. A federal parliamentary inquiry, led by the late Labor MP Peta Murphy, called for inducements like bonus bets to be banned. It warned they encouraged riskier bets, higher losses, and undermined harm minimisation messages. BlueBet, according to the regulator, prioritised the retention of a profitable customer over its legislated 'responsible gambling responsibilities'. It found no evidence the VIP manager had been trained in harm minimisation. 'Instead of monitoring the situation and engaging in meaningful responsible gambling actions, BlueBet chose to award the complainant VIP status and assign a dedicated VIP account manager, whose commission was tied to the complainant's net gambling revenue,' the NTRWC decision said. Bluebet told the regulator that it called the man for a 'responsible gambling check-in' after he repeatedly failed to place bets on his credit card due to insufficient funds. But the regulator found this call, which went unanswered, was prompted, in part, by 'payment processing issues' and not concern for his wellbeing. On the day after the phone call, the man continued gambling and requested bonus bets from his VIP manager. 'At no stage did the account manager make mention that BlueBet was concerned about his wagering activities from a responsible gambling perspective,' the NTRWC decision said. 'Rather, the VIP manager continued to encourage the complainant to wager with BlueBet through the promise of the provision of upcoming bonuses.' In the two weeks after the unanswered phone call, the man gambled close to $400,000 with BlueBet. The man's gambling account was eventually closed when he texted his manager to say he wished he 'had been pulled up earlier by you guys' as he had lost everything. Sign up to Breaking News Australia Get the most important news as it breaks after newsletter promotion 'Given the numerous earlier red flags, it is extremely concerning that it took the complainant himself reaching out to BlueBet for his account to be closed,' the decision said. 'BlueBet missed multiple opportunities for timely and appropriate action and it's disappointing that the responsibility fell on the complainant rather than BlueBet taking a more assertive role in protecting the complainant from further harm.' Despite finding Bluebet's conduct to be extremely concerning, the bookmaker was fined $53,380, which is less than 10% of the $570,000 the man lost. This was the maximum penalty available to the commission. The Tasmanian independent MP Andrew Wilkie has previously called for financial penalties to be massively increased to ensure gambling companies are effectively punished for their misconduct. 'It should be an amount that hurts the company financially and hurts them so much that they think, 'heavens, we can't afford that again',' Wilkie said in 2023. 'It should hurt them so much that shareholders say to the board, 'that must not happen again'.' BlueBet merged with gambling company Betr earlier this year and no longer operates as a stand-alone brand. The conduct examined by the regulator took place during 2021. Gilbert Arenas pokes fun at his arrest for illegal gambling plot after being released from jail on $50k bond
Former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas poked fun at his arrest for allegedly running an illegal gambling operation after sharing a video on social media. The case against him was announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California on Wednesday afternoon. However, during a court appearance, Arenas pleaded not guilty and was released pending trial after paying a $50,000 bond. Not serious: Gilbert Arenas has poked fun at his arrest for allegedly running an illegal gambling operation Arenas then swiftly took to social media to address fans and followers for the first time, as he triumphantly claimed: 'They can't hold me'. A video posted by Arenas showed him leaving the police department and joyfully walking down a set of stairs, while a woman behind the camera shouted: 'Free!' The caption to the post, on Arenas' Instagram, read: 'I'm Back on the Block like its HOT. This ain't got s*** to do with me "just rented the house". 'Wasnt apart of the Festivities. #SnitchingGilComingSOON'. Named alongside Arenas - known in his playing days as 'Agent Zero' - are five co-conspirators who have been charged with operating an illegal gambling business. The other five people charged are as follows: Israeli suspected organized crime figure Yevgeni Gershman, 49, Evgenni Tourevski, 48, Allan Austria, 52, Yarin Cohen, 27, and Ievgen Krachun, 43. Along with Arenas, these five were detained without incident by LAPD, Homeland Security, and the IRS. If convicted, the defendants face a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each count. Arenas was arraigned on Wednesday afternoon after appearing in a Los Angeles court for the first time. His trial is scheduled for September 23. An unsealed indictment reveals that from September 2021 to July 2022, Arenas rented out a mansion that he owned in Encino - north of Hollywood - 'for the purpose of hosting high-stakes illegal poker games', according to officials. The U.S. Attorney's Office says a man named Arthur Kats staged the mansion to host the games 'at Arenas' direction' and also 'found co-conspirators to host the games, and collected rent from the co-conspirators on Arenas' behalf.' Officials say that the operation even included a poker felt labeled 'ARENAS POKER CLUB' - featuring an image of Arenas in his basketball uniform and his No. 0. Officials said: 'Gershman, Tourevski, Austria, and Cohen managed illegal "Pot Limit Omaha" poker games, among other illegal games, at the Encino mansion, collected a "rake" - a fee the house charged from each pot either as a percentage or a fixed amount per hand - and invited players to compete.' Krachun, meanwhile, worked as a "chip runner" - tracking the wins and losses of the players involved, distributing poker chips, and paying employees. Gershman has been accused of hiring young women to serve drinks, provide massages, and offer companionship to the players in exchange for tips. These women were also charged a 'tax' - a percentage of their earnings from working the games. Additionally, chefs, valets, and armed security guards were hired to work at the masion. Beyond the games, Gershman has also been charged with three additional counts: conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, marriage fraud, and making a false statement on an immigration document. Gershman faces these charges alongside 35-year-old Valentina Cojocari - who he is alleged to have conspired to enter into a sham marriage with for the purpose of obtaining permanent legal status in the U.S.. Arenas is the former owner of a five-bedroom, five-bathroom mansion in Encino located at 4550 Gable Drive that he sold in December of 2022, after the gambling business is believed to have ended. Authorities say this is where the operation was run. He sold the mansion for $3.1million. The property features lavish views and outdoor spaces (including a pool and a hot tub), a massive kitchen, and a three-car garage among other amenities. Arenas previously tried selling the property for as much as $3.8m. Arenas previously faced run-ins with the law and was suspended for a total of 50 games in the 2009-10 season for bringing a firearm into the Wizards locker room and drawing it on teammate Javaris Crittenton in an argument about gambling debts. Police investigated the incident and charged Arenas with carrying a pistol without a license. He was sentenced to two-years probation and 30 days in a halfway house. In June of 2013, the LAPD arrested Arenas for possession of illegal fireworks. Off the court, Arenas has made a number of controversial racial statements about European players entering the NBA and about international stars from Africa . In the aftermath of Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green punching then-Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in December of 2023, Arenas appeared to praise him. Then last summer, prior to the Paris Olympics, Arenas belittled the national team of South Sudan - who nearly pulled off a major upset of the United States. After the loss, he said: 'We almost lost to the Ahi Ahi tribe. This is crazy, [Joel] Embiid over there, throwing the game for his cousins and s***.' He also mimicked a blow dart and took a shot at the quality of life in South Sudan saying they 'get their shoes from America' and that they 'don't even have basketball rims... they shootin' on peach baskets in dirt.' Arenas went on to apologize for his comments, but did so in a backhanded way after former NBA star Luol Deng called him out.
