Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan objects to film bodies' ‘disrespectful attitude'

The Hindu24-05-2025

The Government of Andhra Pradesh is preparing a comprehensive film development policy that is aimed at developing the skills of people involved in the 24 crafts, from production to distribution, and adopting advanced technologies.
'While doing that, the government has decided to henceforth engage with representatives of the film associations only and not at the individual level,' Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan said in a press release on Saturday.
'The film associations have not met Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu even after a year of the NDA coming to power, which reflects their lack of respect and gratitude for what the government is doing for them.'K. Pawan KalyanAndhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister
The film associations had not met Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu even after a year of the NDA coming to power, which reflected their lack of respect and gratitude for what the government was doing for them.
The government planned to grant industry status to films and was taking other steps required for the good of all those dependent on the film industry, but the film bodies, like the film chamber, producers council, and the Movie Artists' Association, seemed to have forgotten how the previous government had treated senior actors and technicians with disdain and subjected them to hardship, Mr. Pawan Kalyan observed.
In contrast, the NDA Government fully supported the release of an Akkineni Nagarjuna film. The government promised before the elections that it would extend all possible support to the film industry, he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister questioned why producers continued to submit individual petitions for increasing ticket prices during their releases instead of coming together for structured negotiations. He emphasised that persons such as Dil Raju, Allu Aravind, D. Suresh Babu, Y. Supriya, Chinnababu, C. Ashwini Dutt and Naveen Yerneni should make collective efforts for the betterment of the film industry's growth.
The statement mentioned that Mr. Kalyan had initiated discussions with the departments concerned for the development of the film industry, wherein the officials noted that many theaters were being run by leaseholders instead of the original owners.
Further, Mr. Pawan Kalyan instructed the State Taxes Department to investigate whether taxes were being properly collected from those leaseholders, and whether increased ticket prices were leading to higher tax revenues.
It was also stated that there would be a review of discrepancies between reported ticket sales and actual tax collections. Food inspectors and officials of the Legal Metrology Department were conducting regular inspections in the wake of complaints of overpricing of food and beverages in theaters, and the absence of safe drinking water facility.
Besides, the statement said the Cinematography Department had been instructed to report the number of multiplex theaters and the practice of dividing single-screen theaters into two or three screens and operated as multiplexes.
The government was investigating whether there was a difference in ticket rates between these and regular single-screen theaters. In this regard, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Nellore, Guntur, Kakinada, Tirupati and Rajamahendravaram would be closely monitored, Mr. Pawan Kalyan added.

"Nitish-BJP has not just ruined law and order, but cremated it": RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav

Patna (Bihar) [India], June 10 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav on Tuesday criticised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, alleging a failure of law and order under his government and claiming that over 65,000 murders have taken place during his tenure. In a post on X, the former CM cited official statistics to claim that over 65,000 murders have occurred during Nitish Kumar's tenure. 'Does Nitish know, recognise and understand that during his rule, according to official figures, 65,000 murders have taken place? 65,000 people have been murdered, 65,000!', he wrote on X. Raising concerns over daylight crimes, Yadav questioned the state of policing in Bihar. 'Nitish should tell how many murders are taking place by breaking into houses before 5 p.m.?' he said. RJD Chief further added, 'Nitish-BJP has not only destroyed the law and order but has also cremated it. Bihar has never had such a corrupt, careless and lazy police.' Earlier, Tejashwi Yadav launched a sharp attack on the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government, accusing it of failing on law and order and allowing the health system to collapse. Yadav said to reporters, 'Criminals are on the loose in Bihar. Many incidents are constantly coming to light, and the police seem helpless. The government is also sleeping, and it seems as if they have nothing to do with anything.., rape happens and the Deputy CM makes promises, this is the situation. This is maha-jungle raj.' The developments come as political temperatures rise in Bihar ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections. Opposition parties criticise the government over rising crime and alleged governance failures. Meanwhile, Bihar elections are expected to be held later this year in October or November; however, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has not announced an official date. While the NDA, consisting of the BJP, JD(U), and LJP, will once again be looking to continue their stint in Bihar, the INDIA bloc, consisting of the RJD, Congress, and left parties, will be looking to unseat Nitish Kumar. In the current Bihar Assembly, which has 243 members, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has 131, the BJP has 80 MLAs, JD(U) has 45, and HAM(S) has 4, with the support of 2 Independent Candidates. The Opposition's INDIA Bloc has a strength of 111 members with RJD leading with 77 MLAs, Congress-19, CPI(ML)-11, CPI(M)-2 and CPI-2. (ANI)

"All that you have done is against muslims": Congress' Rashid Alvi on 11 years of NDA government

New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): As the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) completed 11 years in power at the Centre, Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Monday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance for targeting Muslims by passing laws while not being able to tackle the problems of inflation for the people. 'I have to say with regret that you brought the law of triple talaq against the Muslims. Brought the law of Waqf against Muslims, You are doing everything in this country which is against Muslims,' Congress leader Rashid Alvi told ANI. Criticising demonitisation, repealing Article 370, not listening to farmers and not keeping inflation in check, the Congress leader highlighted them as failures of the Modi-led government. 'You don't realise that during demonetisation, during the summer, so many people died, that is your minus point, and you think of it as a plus point. You used to claim that with demonitisation, black money would be finished, is it finished though? Also said that terror will end, but did terror finish? Just now, so many people died in Pahalgam,' he said. Continuing his jibe at BJP over Kashmir, he added, 'You removed (Article) 370 (from Kashmir), put people in jail, and put 8 lakh soldiers there, but in the last 11 years did you give jobs to people, have you reduced inflation? The Petrol-diesel which you have bought for Rs 35-40 you are giving the same for Rs 100 to the people of the country. Farmers kept sitting for two years, you were not ready to listen to them.' As Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government completed 11 years at the Centre, BJP President and Union Minister JP Nadda highlighted the various achievements of the government, including good governance, change in India's 'political culture,' and several bold decisions made. Nadda said during a press conference, 'The work done under PM Modi's leadership is written in the golden words because of the unimaginable and unique works. PM Modi has changed the country's politics, political culture. The country was appeased 11 years ago. Earlier, saving a political chair by dividing the society was the norm.' (ANI)
