Spain stronger after battles on & off pitch
Spain defender Laia Codina says the world champions have become stronger because of their battles both on and off the pitch over the past few years. The most notable of those was the furore and subsequent repercussions caused by former national football federation boss Luis Rubiales kissing Spain player Jenni Hermoso without her consent.Rubiales was found guilty of sexual assault last week in a case in which Codina testified in support of Hermoso."As a group, for sure, I can feel it - we are all so much stronger. We, all of us, have suffered a lot off the pitch," Codina told BBC Sport."A good example is against Belgium [last week when they came from 2-0 down to win 3-2]. Two years ago, I think we would have lost that game."The assault occurred as Spain's players received their medals after defeating England to win the 2023 Women's World Cup, with Rubiales grabbing Hermoso by the head and kissing her on the lips.A group of 81 players boycotted the team afterwards and Codina, 25, appeared at the trial in Madrid in February to give testimony in support of Hermoso's account of feeling overwhelmed. She returned to London the same day and was an unused substitute in Arsenal's Women's League Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City on 6 February."The week that I had to go to Madrid as a witness was a difficult week. It was tough for me obviously personally," added Codina."A lot of my team-mates at Arsenal could see that there were a lot of emotions. I was up and down. There was a feeling of everything again. "But that week is done and I feel good. I feel I did what I had to do in that moment and I'm always supporting Jenni [Hermoso] and my team-mates and the women. "It is something that made me proud, so I'm happy. I don't feel like it affects us right now in the team because we don't speak about it. It is not something we can control, so why should we speak about it."
'They have to see us as football players'
Codina says she hopes now the case is over, people will talk about Spanish players' achievements in football. After becoming world champions in 2023, Spain went on to win the Women's Nations League the next year, and they are currently preparing for Euro 2025."I just hope that everything now goes well and we speak about football finally," she said."We speak about this team that has been World Cup winners, Nations League winners. We want to speak about football because it is why we are here. "It is our job and that is something that is going to be better for us and everyone in women's football. I hope that - for Spain in general and for society. "They have to see us as football players - as women's football players - and they have to feel that they are proud of us. Just this."Spain - who face England at Wembley on Wednesday (20:00 GMT) - came from 2-0 down to beat Belgium 3-2 in their Women's Nations League opener on Friday. Wednesday's opponents England have voiced their support for the Spanish players throughout the Rubiales trial. Last Thursday, England defender Lucy Bronze described them as "incredibly brave" for speaking out."I saw some words from Lucy Bronze and [England manager] Sarina Wiegman. I've heard them and it's really nice to be honest. I really want to thank them," said Codina, who is one of the first Spanish players to speak publicly after the verdict, following captain Irene Paredes, who discussed it last week."Feeling that super [kindness] from them, from a big national team like them... England in general, how they work for women's football, is something that we have to look for. "It's nice that we receive those words. I'm really grateful for that."

British child, 4, in holiday nightmare after being sucked into hotel pool vent
The youngster was stuck up to his elbow in a pool cleaning hole at a resort in the north of Majorca and needed firefighters to free him A four year old British boy was left frantically trying to free himself after his arm was sucked into the cleaning system of a hotel swimming pool in Majorca, Spain. Onlookers were reportedly horrified as the young holidaymaker suddenly became trapped after inserting his arm into the pool's suction hole, which was not covered. The vacuum effect from the hole ensnared him up to his elbow, prompting staff at the Hotel Zafiro in Can Picafort, a resort in the north of the island, to call emergency services. Paramedics were first on the scene but were unable to liberate the boy, leading firefighters to drain the pool and then use a pneumatic drill to access a pipe leading to the hole. The boy was given a helmet and ear protectors as they drilled down, but around 30 minutes later, they eventually cut it off at the source and freed the boy. Images from the scene show the boy in an orange cap waiting patiently as emergency workers strive to extricate him. Police and members of the Spanish Guardia Civil were also present, reports the Mirror. The boy was taken to a local clinic but fortunately did not sustain any serious injuries. Police later interrogated the hotel's lifeguards, and one confessed that he had already reported issues with the suction system to the resort's management team. A makeshift solution to the problem involved reinserting a screw to cover the hole, but this often became loose. Local reports indicate that an investigation into possible negligence by hotel management is currently in progress.

REVEALED: The English Premier League star Aberdeen winger Shayden Morris watches before games for inspiration
Aberdeen winger Shayden Morris has revealed he studies footage of an England international and Premier League legend in a bid to further improve his game. Morris played a pivotal role in the Dons' Scottish Cup final win against Celtic as the Reds won the trophy for the first time since 1990. The 23-year-old made an explosive impact off the bench when his cross was parried into his own net by Celtic keeper Kasper Schmeichel. In a memorable season, Scottish Cup-winning hero Morris also scooped the Aberdeen Player of the Year award – voted for by supporters. However, he is constantly striving to improve his performances and watches footage of Raheem Sterling for inspiration before matches. Sterling, 30, won four Premier League titles, an FA Cup and five League Cups with Manchester City. Currently at Chelsea, the winger – capped 82 times by England – has scored 174 career goals and spent last season on loan at Arsenal. Morris said: 'I still watch clips of Raheem Sterling from his Manchester City days to study his movement. 'Of course, at Arsenal he hasn't been the same as he was before at City, but it's him as a person I look up to. 'I want to improve so even before games sometimes I'll study Sterling online. 'He has pace, but he's also got the skill to make the most of that, so I'm trying to add stuff that he did. 'I like to think I'm slowly getting better at that so I can help the team as much as possible.' Signed from Fleetwood Town in summer 2022, Morris endured a frustrating first two seasons at Pittodrie due to injury. In his debut season, the winger suffered a hamstring tear which ruled him out for four months. There was a further injury setback in the 2023-24 season when Morris was ruled out for three months with another hamstring injury which required surgery. However, under manager Jimmy Thelin, the wing star has delivered a breakout season with five goals and 13 assists. In his constant pursuit of improvement, Morris has also sought advice from former Scotland international winger Robert Snodgrass. Former Leeds United, Aston Villa, West Ham and Norwich City star Snodgrass is now an agent. Capped 28 times, Snodgrass is with the same agency as Morris' representative. Morris hopes guidance from Snodgrass can help him develop into 'something really special'. He said: 'I've also got a good support system around me with my agent Joe Bolger, as we do a lot of analysis. 'Robert Snodgrass is also part of the agency and we do a lot of stuff together as well. 'He was a winger and quite a technical player – although he didn't have as much pace as me. 'In fact, he told me: 'I didn't have your pace, but I've got the other side of the game'. 'So if he can help me with that other side then hopefully I can merge into something really special.' Morris may have been seeking advice from Snodgrass and inspiration from Sterling on how to elevate his game to the next level. However, he has also been passing on his own knowledge to help younger players develop. Morris helped fellow Londoner Alfie Dorrington during his loan spell at Pittodrie from Tottenham Hotspur. Centre-back Dorrington started the Scottish Cup final win against Celtic at Hampden. The 20-year-old has now returned to his parent club. Prior to joining Aberdeen on loan. Dorrington signed an extended contract with Tottenham until summer 2029. Morris said: 'When Alfie first came up, I knew he hadn't played much first-team football so I really tried to help him. 'I told him how things were really different compared to London, and he settled in well. 'Alfie showed he's a really good player technically and built on that physical side. 'I think he's only going to get better and better – you can see why Spurs rate him so highly.'
