French MP warns of water war between India and Pakistan, calls for urgent de-escalation

Business Upturn07-05-2025

French Member of Parliament Bastien Lachaud, from the La France Insoumise – NFP group, has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the ongoing military escalation between India and Pakistan, following India's cross-border Operation Sindoor and Pakistan's retaliation. In a press note titled 'Water War between India and Pakistan: The Urgency is Peace', Lachaud warned that tensions between two nuclear-armed nations pose a serious risk to global security.
The statement criticizes both countries, noting that India responded militarily to a terrorist attack for which it blamed Pakistan without providing evidence. It also mentions India's earlier decision to suspend its participation in the Indus Waters Treaty, effectively threatening to 'cut off water' from rivers flowing into Pakistan—a move described as dangerous considering the disputed nature of Kashmir, the region referred to as the 'water tower' between the two countries.
According to Lachaud, this conflict over water resources highlights one of the greatest emerging threats of the 21st century. He argued that the violation of fundamental rights in Kashmir, rise of nationalist governments, and collapse of international norms are contributing to a volatile situation.
He urged that international law must prevail over military force and called for an immediate ceasefire and peaceful resolution. Lachaud said France must not remain passive and should join global efforts, alongside nations like China, to prevent further escalation between India and Pakistan.

He emphasized that the scarcity and exploitation of water will be a central issue in future global conflicts and that France should be at the forefront of building an international legal framework to safeguard water security for humanity.
The statement was shared by Bastien Lachaud on X (formerly Twitter) at 10:42 PM IST on May 7, 2025.

Suspected crypto kidnapping mastermind detained in Morocco

One of the suspected masterminds behind a string of violent kidnappings in France of people linked to the cryptocurrency trade was detained Tuesday in Morocco, France's justice minister said. Badiss Mohamed Amide Bajjou, a 24-year-old French-Moroccan citizen from just outside Paris, was wanted by France for several crimes, including armed extortion and kidnapping as part of a criminal gang, according to the 'red notice' for him published by Interpol and Moroccan state media. French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin thanked Morocco on X for detaining the man, citing the 'excellent judicial cooperation' between the two countries. Bajjou had 'multiple bladed weapons of different sizes' in his possession when he was taken into custody, as well as 'dozens of mobile phones and communication devices' and a sum of money allegedly related to criminal activities, Moroccan state media reported. The man was apprehended, weeks after the latest kidnapping attempt in Paris, near Tangier in northern Morocco, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV. He is allegedly linked to a string of violent crimes related to crypto funds dating back to at least January 21 of this year. In January, David Balland, cofounder of a crypto wallet company, and his partner, were kidnapped in central France with their attackers cutting off one of Balland's fingers as part of a 10-million euro ($11,430,000) ransom demand. The couple were later freed by elite French policemen, according to BFMTV. Bajjou is also suspected of involvement in the May kidnapping of another man working in the crypto industry, who also had one of his fingers cut off before his release, per BFMTV. Later that month, the daughter of the CEO of French cryptocurrency platform Paymium was saved by passers-by from a daylight kidnapping attempt in Paris, with Bajjou suspected to have been involved, BFMTV reported. On May 30, 25 people aged between 16 and 23 were put under official investigation in Paris, suspected of involvement in a kidnapping in May in Paris and an attempted kidnapping in the western French city of Nantes.

RCMP statement regarding media reports on the structural investigation into the Israel-Hamas conflict

LONDON, ON, June 4, 2025 /CNW/ - In light of recent media coverage regarding the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's (RCMP) involvement in matters related to the Israel-Hamas armed conflict, we wish to clarify the nature and scope of our activities. In early 2024, the RCMP initiated a structural investigation in connection with this ongoing conflict. A structural investigation is a broad, intelligence-led intake process designed to collect, preserve, and assess information potentially relevant under Canada's Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act. This includes gathering open-source material and voluntary submissions from individuals wishing to provide information. The primary objective is to proactively collect relevant information that may support future investigative steps, should jurisdictional and legal thresholds be met. It is important to emphasize that a structural investigation is not a criminal investigation. The RCMP employs a well-established structured protocol to efficiently triage and process incoming information related to global conflicts, this standardized initial procedure serves as a foundation for every case, after which specialized investigative techniques are applied to address the unique aspects of each investigation, including the Israel-Hamas structural investigation. Should a perpetrator of core international crimes—such as genocide, war crimes, or crimes against humanity—with the appropriate nexus to Canada be identified, the RCMP will initiate a separate criminal investigation. To date, the RCMP has not initiated any related criminal investigations. Although this work has been underway in a developmental capacity since early 2024, it has not been publicly announced as the RCMP continues to develop essential supporting operational tools. This includes a secure online portal available in French, English, Hebrew and Arabic, to facilitate the structured and secure any submissions of information by the public and potential witnesses. Unfortunately, technical challenges have resulted in delays to the rollout of this critical tool; once this online portal is ready for access, we will advise the public. The RCMP remains committed to its mandate under Canadian law, to assess credible allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. We conduct this work with impartiality, relying on evidence-based assessments in alignment with the principles of the rule of law. Given the sensitivity of the matter, we urge the public to refrain from drawing premature conclusions about the RCMP's role or intent. This initiative is solely focused on collecting relevant information and does not target any community or group. Further updates will be provided once the public reporting portal has been made available. Gabby Thomas Slams Critic Of Her Interracial Relationship

Olympian Gabby Thomas responded to a "gross" spectator who shouted weird comments at her as she prepared for a track meet. On Monday, the 3-time Olympic gold medalist took to social media to call out the person who heckled her as she stretched before running in the Women's 100-meter dash at the Grand Slam Track meet at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Sunday. Gabby has won a total of five Olympic medals: three gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics (200-meter, 4x100-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay), a silver medal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (4x100-meter relay), and a bronze medal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (200-meter). The 28-year-old ultimately finished in fourth place for the 100-meter and second place in the 200-meter sprint. She took to social media to reflect on the races. "Not the Slam results I hoped for, but when you race as often as I do, you can't win em all," she wrote on X (better known as Twitter), accompanied by photos of her at the race, a picture she took with fans, and a special gift she received from them. "On the bright side, this is the best I have ever ran at this at this point in the season," she continued. "I'm so so grateful to everyone who continues to support me on my journey, win or lose- rain or shine. I love this sport sm and I'll see you guys on the track very soon!!!" While many fans congratulated her... ...one X user made it known that he was not rooting for her. In fact, he was there in person, at the track meet, to ensure she knew just how much he didn't want her to win. "I made Gabby lose by heckling her," the X user tweeted. "And it made my parlay win." The tweet was accompanied by the bets he made against her, and a video of him yelling various comments about her, ranging from telling Gabby "not to choke" to weird comments about her interracial relationship. "Come on, Gabby. Don't choke like you did yesterday, Gabby. You're a choke artist. You're going down, Gabby." He continued to heckle her as someone next to him shouted, "Don't listen to him!" "Come on, Melissa [Jefferson-Wooden]," he continued. "Melissa got married this year — [she] got a Black husband. Gabby got a white guy. I want Melissa to win." This was in reference to Gabby recently getting engaged to her entrepreneur fiancé, Spencer McManes, who happens to be white. After sharing the post, some users called for the user to be banned from future track meets, as well as betting platforms. When Gabby found out the heckler was mocking her online and boasting about winning a bet at her expense, she decided to address him. "This grown man followed me around the track as I took pictures and signed autographs for fans (mostly children) shouting personal insults- anybody who enables him online is gross." Hecklers have become a common occurrence at sporting events, but sometimes people take things too far. I'm glad Gabby addressed it the way she did.
