One horrified witness told Manchester Evening News that they heard screams moments after the bus hit the bridge.
They said: "It [was] probably two minutes before I got there.
"I could just hear screaming coming from the top of the bus."
The 100 bus departed from Shudehill and was travelling to Salford, Trafford Centre and Warrington.
Shocking images show firefighters at the scene, and, according to witnesses, an air ambulance also attended the incident.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "We are currently responding to a collision between a bus and a bridge at the junction of Barton Road and Trafford Road in Eccles.
"Emergency services are currently on scene as part of the ongoing work. Please avoid the area as road closures are currently in place."

Missing woman found dead with her ‘clothes ripped off' in man's shed, court hears
The trial opened at Manchester Crown Court this week MURDER PROBE Missing woman found dead with her 'clothes ripped off' in man's shed, court hears A MISSING woman was found dead with her clothes 'ripped off' in a man's shed, a court has heard. The body of Mariann Borocz, 55, was found by cops behind the home of suspect Christopher Barlow on Pedder Street, Manchester on Christmas Eve last year. 4 Mariann Borocz's body was found in December last year 4 The trial into her death opened at Manchester Crown Court this week Credit: MEN Media The trial opened at Manchester Crown Court this week. The court heart that Mariann was seen on CCTV at a convenience store nearby just days before her body was discovered. Barlow, 60, was seen next to the victim in the store and appeared to buy cans of cider. Prosecutor James Bourne-Arton KC said: 'This is the last time she is seen alive. read more in news CAR RAMPAGE Moment driver ploughs into pedestrian hours after being released from prison 'The next time she was seen by someone other than the defendant was on December 21 when she was found dead in the defendant's shed. 'Her body was naked, her clothes had been cut or ripped off and placed in a nearby bin.' Barlow, who wore a plain grey top, grey trousers and glasses in the dock, confirmed that he was the man seen in the footage. The prosecutor continued: 'He said she had asked him for £1, and he had given her £10. 'He said that she had then walked off and not come down Pedder Street. 'A quick search of the property was carried out and during this search the defendant said he did not own a mobile phone and did not have access to the shed in his back yard, which he says he never uses.' Three charged with murder after boy, 19, stabbed to death in Powerleague football car park Cops then combed through Barlow's property, where they made the grim discovery. Mr Bourne-Arton added: 'A key to the padlock on the shed was found on the key ring in the possession of the defendant. 'In the shed the deceased's body was found, the body was naked, and she was obviously dead." The prosecutor said that 'other than a red mark on her neck there were no obvious signs of injury' and that at this point Barlow was rearrested on suspicion of murder. He said Ms Borocz's clothes 'which appear to have been ripped off' were found in a nearby bin, along with her phone and handbag containing her passport and bank card. Elsewhere in the house a sock was found on an ironing board that was found to contain Ms Borocz's DNA, while police also found a pair of scissors and a knife in the main bedroom. Mr Bourne-Arton highlighted three possible causes of Mariann's death - asphyxia, hypothermia or deprivation of food and water. But Mr Bourne-Arton said: 'We do not think it is likely that she was locked in that shed alive, given the surrounding circumstances.' Barlow denies murder and the lesser charge of manslaughter. The trial continues. 4 Mariann Borocz was last seen in a convenience store on December 14

Self-confessed ‘psycho' hounded ex-lover with calls and texts & isolated him from pals in ‘campaign of fear and abuse'
Woman failed to accept relationship was over STALK HELL Self-confessed 'psycho' hounded ex-lover with calls and texts & isolated him from pals in 'campaign of fear and abuse' A SELF-confessed "psycho" bombarded her ex-lover with calls and texts in a relentless "campaign of fear and abuse". Charmaine Bradbury also isolated Mark Price from his friends and family after leaving him terrified to leave his home. Advertisement 4 Charmaine Bradbury waged a campaign of harassment against her ex Credit: Cavendish The 36-year-old hounded her ex with 94 calls in 24 hours on one occasion and bombarded him with dozens of texts. Bradbury even tried to pin the blame on Mark - claiming that he brought her "no joy" in put-down messages. She pleaded guilty to harassment but avoided jail and was instead slapped with a five-year restraining order. Crewe Magistrates' Court heard the couple had been in a relationship in January 2024 but broke up last June. Advertisement Read more news CAT SLAYERS My cat was mutilated by sick torture cult - how psychos abuse YOUR pets in vids Niamh Philips, prosecuting, said: "The parties had a conversation over WhatsApp and Mr Price blocked the defendant. However, whilst blocked, Miss Bradbury sent two unwanted text messages to Mr Price. ''The following day Mr Price received 74 missed calls from a private number to his work phone, from 8.25am to 3.35pm. Miss Bradbury left two voice mails from those calls. The same day there were 20 missed calls from Miss Bradbury's number to Mr Price's work phone. ''Again 28 text messages that same day from Miss Bradbury's number to the defendant's work phone. The messages ranged from being nice to vile resulting in her being arrested.'' The court heard Bradbury, who lists her Facebook status as "sweet but psycho", left Mark with nightmares and cold sweats. Advertisement In degrading messages, she told him: "We both agree we do not want to be with each other. Just please leave asap. I am on the phone more than ever because you are not doing anything for me anymore. ''And I have genuinely gone off on us. You bring me no joy in my life at all any more. You depress me." Another putdown read: "I have never needed you and it is only the past couple of weeks that I have become more distant with you as this relationship is dead." Dad-of-two Mark told police how he lost his job as a result of the abuse. Advertisement He added: "Charmaine isolated me from seeing my family and friends. "She continued to hold on to personal possessions including items of deep sentimental value. She refused to return them. That prolonged this trauma making it hard to move forward. "The impact on the children has been devastating due to the chaos caused by her actions. Important bonds have suffered and nightmares, cold sweats and severe anxiety became part of my life,. "I have been told that it will take time, possibly a long time to recover. I am determined to recover. Advertisement "This is not just a case of harassment, Charmaine has conducted a campaign of control, fear and abuse which has affected me emotionally, physically, professionally and personally." As well as a restraining order, Bradbury was handed an 18-month community order. She must attend a Building Better Choices rehabilitation program and undergo 12 months of alcohol treatment. Bradbury was also ordered to pay Mark £250 in compensation. Advertisement JP Alan Eyres said: "I've got to say this harassment is as bad as any I have seen for this kind of case. "There will be compensation to Mark Price for pain, suffering and mental health anguish. I appreciate that £250 goes nowhere near the kind of suffering but we have to be mindful of your means and income." 4 Bradbury couldn't accept the relationship was over Credit: Cavendish 4 She hounded her ex with calls and texts Credit: Cavendish Advertisement
