BBC News21-05-2025

International athletes described as the "creme de la creme" of long distance swimming have visited Jersey.Swimmers from the USA, Mexico and Croatia were among those in the island on Saturday to be inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. The awards ceremony takes place in a different location each year when athletes gather to receive their honours, attend a conference and swim.Swim coach Sally Minty-Gravett MBE, who hosted the event, said the top class athletes wanted to return to the island for more swimming.
She said the swimmers had all achieved incredible feats of endurance. "We've got Oceans Seven swimmers, we've got Ice Sevens swimmers, which are the people who have done ice miles in the seven continents, we've got people from the Farallon Islands here and from San Francisco," said Mrs Minty-Gravett."These are the crème de la crème and they have all said how lovely and fantastic it was and they will all be back to swim around Jersey."
Ned Denison, chairman of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, said Jersey was ideal for the event."We look for locations where we can do a weekend, where we can swim, where people will want to come," he said. "Jersey had that community which we knew we would not only have a crowd but a crowd that's interested."
Fifty swimmers attended the event and 36 of them took part in a swimming race from Green Island to Harve des Pas on Saturday morning. American open water swimmer Grace van der Byl won the race and said: "Beautiful, it was utterly beautiful, everything I expected the swim to be, chilly but beautiful."Van der Byl was also being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the awards evening.I don't know if this is necessarily something I deserve but I am grateful for it," she said.
Jersey has three places in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. In 2005 Sally Minty-Gravett was inducted, Charlie Gravett in 2016 and the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club was also inducted in 2015. Scottish open water swimmer Colleen Blair MBE said swimming in Jersey was "special". "I think there is such a history here and that I have done an around Jersey and a Jersey to France and they are amazing swims," she said."I think the conditions, the club, Sally and a lot of the history just makes it even more special."

Giants overtake Rockies for seventh consecutive win

June 12 - Casey Schmitt slid around the tag of catcher Hunter Goodman to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the San Francisco Giants rallied again to beat the Colorado Rockies 10-7 on Wednesday in Denver for their seventh straight victory. San Francisco came close to its seventh consecutive one-run victory, which would have tied the major league record set by the 1927 Chicago Cubs. Willy Adames homered among his three hits, Mike Yastrzemski, Heliot Ramos and Schmitt had two hits each and Jung Hoo Lee and Adames scored three runs apiece for San Francisco. Yastrzemski knocked in three runs. Giants reliever Tristan Beck (1-0) pitched three innings of two-run ball. San Francisco trailed 6-3 after seven innings but hit three singles to load the bases with one out in the eighth against Tyler Kinley (0-3). Schmitt walked to bring home one run, and Yastrzemski hit a two-run double to tie it. Schmitt's slide on Fitzgerald's sacrifice bunt made it 7-6, and San Francisco tacked on three more runs in the ninth for its first multirun win since June 1. Goodman homered and doubled twice and Jordan Beck and Brenton Doyle had two hits each for Colorado, which has lost five in a row. Rockies starter Kyle Freeland allowed three runs on six hits in six innings but got a no-decision. He struck out five and walked two. The Giants went ahead 3-0 on Adames' two-run homer in the first, his seventh, and his sacrifice fly in the third. The Rockies rallied in the bottom of the third off San Francisco starter Robbie Ray. Tyler Freeman and Beck singled, and one out later, Goodman doubled to bring home Freeman. Thairo Estrada hit a grounder to second, and first baseman Jerar Encarnacion missed the throw, allowing both runners to score to tie it. Keston Hiura hit a two-out RBI single to put Colorado in front 4-3. Ray lasted four innings, allowing four runs -- two earned -- on six hits and two walks. He struck out five in his shortest outing since April 16 at Philadelphia. The Rockies tacked on a run in the fifth on Orlando Arcia's RBI single and another when Ryan Ritter led off the sixth with a triple and scored on Freeman's sacrifice fly. The Giants will aim to sweep the three-game series on Thursday. --Field Level Media

Backups bring down the house, Pacers take 2-1 Finals lead

June 12 - INDIANAPOLIS -- Backup guards Bennedict Mathurin and T.J. McConnell helped Indiana's bench break out with 49 points as the Pacers topped the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-107 on Wednesday to claim a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals. Thanks to 27 points from Mathurin and the kind of pyrotechnics the Pacers have grown to adore from reserve point guard McConnell, Indiana has the advantage in the best-of-seven series. Tyrese Haliburton provided heroics with 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds while Pascal Siakam added 21 points for the Pacers, who haven't lost back-to-back games since December. Jalen Williams led the Thunder with 26 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 24 points. Chet Holmgren compiled 20 points and 10 rebounds but shot 0-for-6 from 3-point range. Game 4 is scheduled for Friday in Indianapolis. The Thunder trailed 110-102 with three minutes to go, but Alex Caruso tried to keep the Pacers from a premature celebration with a steal and breakaway into the open court. Two steps into the paint, Aaron Nesmith closed and forcefully brought both arms down on Caruso to prevent the shot attempt and take him to the floor. Following a review, no flagrant foul was called. Caruso made both free throws and Indiana's Myles Turner subsequently lost the ball out of bounds. However, Turner, who missed eight of his first 10 shots, came up with two blocks of Holmgren on the same possession to keep the lead at six. Indiana got another stop, and Siakam lit up the stadium for good with an easy basket that gave the Pacers a 112-104 lead with 69 seconds left. McConnell was seemingly everywhere, and he came up with massive defensive plays all game. He ripped off Caruso's bullet inbounds pass with two hands at point-blank range under the basket and pumped in a layup to tie the game at 95 early in the fourth quarter. Mathurin cashed a trey off a McConnell assist, putting the Pacers up 98-96. After sitting the first 4:56 in the fourth quarter, Haliburton returned to the floor, took a handoff at the top of the key, stopped, squared and splashed his fourth 3-pointer of the game for a 101-98 lead with 6:42 remaining. Indiana's Aaron Nembhard made a 12-foot jumper from the left elbow and the Pacers got it back after a missed 3-point attempt, taking a touchdown lead (107-100) on Obi Toppin's two-hand dunk off of a miss with 4:23 to go. Nesmith caught a skip pass on the right wing and drained a trey on Indiana's next possession for an eight-point lead. McConnell hit a running right-handed layup between two clutch buckets by Mathurin as the Pacers stayed close, down 93-91, with 10 minutes to play. Oklahoma City had surged ahead for its biggest lead of the second half -- 89-84 -- to end the third quarter. Williams hit a long 3-pointer came after an and-1 baseline dunk by Holmgren, who moved through the swiping hands of McConnell to finish. Williams played a lot of the game with the ball in his hands as the Pacers worked to keep Gilgeous-Alexander in check. McConnell leads NBA reserves in assists per game in the playoffs (4.1). --Jeff Reynolds, Field Level Media

Commanders suffer major blow before start of 2025 season as star is carted off field in offseason training

Washington Commanders wide receiver Noah Brown was carted off the field during the team's mandatory mini camp on Wednesday. Brown, one of the team's integral offensive players, went to the ground to make a catch during a 7-on-7 period and stayed on he turf for a few extra moments. After slowly walking to the sideline, he went down and needed to be taken away to be looked at on a cart, with a towel over Brown's head. There was no immediate diagnosis for Brown, with less than three months until the Washington opens the NFL season against the New York Giants on Sept. 7. Brown was slated to enter training camp as the team's No 3 wide receiver behind Terry McLaurin and the newly acquired Deebo Samuel. Commanders fans have gotten behind Brown since he caught the Jayden Daniels' Hail Mary last October to defeat the Chicago Bears in one of the definitive moments of last year. Brown also reportedly threw his helmet on his way to the sideline in frustration over the injury. The Commanders are coming off their best season in over 30 years after reaching the NFC Championship Game. Washington looks prepped for a similar run after retain most of the major players from the team that made it to the final four left standing last season. One of them was Brown, as a big target across the middle, when McLaurin and Samuel will be demanding a ton of attention. The Commanders are hoping for the best when it comes to Brown after Wednesday's setback, as losing him for the season would be a major blow.
