Odisha women use Subhadra Yojana funds to revive dying Balia River
JAGATSINGHPUR: Money under the government's flagship scheme Subhadra Yojana has been used by women for varied purposes. But in the sleepy village of Balia under Kujang block in Jagatsinghpur, 65 women have contributed their share of Subhadra money for a greater cause - breathing life into the fast dying Balia river.
The women, all members of Maa Bajrabudhi Primary Mahila Cooperative Society, founded in 2024, have restored a large patch of the river that was choked with silt and dense weeds. They had formed the cooperative society last year with the goal of economic empowerment and environmental rejuvenation.
Reviving 32 acre of Balia river bed at their village was their first major work. They removed pollutants, cleaned it and restored its natural environment within a period of 20 days. What came as a shot in the arm for the women was the Subhadra money of Rs 5,000.
Balia river, a distributary of Mahanadi that meets Jatadhari river mouth, had sustained the local population for generations through fishing, vegetable cultivation, and small-scale farming. Over the years, though, the riverbank was encroached by locals and the water choked. The women had time and again urged the local administration and elected representatives for reviving the waterbody but in vain.
'When the government announced the Subhadra Yojana, each of us had instantly decided to use the money and also some from our own savings for reviving the river. The idea was to generate income for ourselves and other villagers from the river water,' said president of the cooperative society Puspalata Jena.

Court quashes harassment case as woman, minor at time of FIR, seeks to move on
The Delhi High Court has agreed to quash a six-year-old FIR filed by a schoolgirl-turned-adult, who had accused her senior of harassment, blackmail, and exploitation during their time in school. While acknowledging the serious nature of the allegations, the court accepted the woman's plea to withdraw the case, citing her desire to move forward in life without the emotional and social burden of a criminal trial. advertisementThe complainant, who was a minor at the time of the FIR, alleged that she was threatened, exploited, and blackmailed by her school senior with whom she was in a years later, the complainant, now an adult, informed the court that she wished to withdraw the case, citing the ongoing criminal proceedings as a serious impediment to her future opportunities and personal relationships, including matrimonial prospects. The court was told that the woman and her mother had consciously chosen to move on from the incident. In the FIR, the girl had claimed that the senior had demanded money and threatened to release her private photographs, and that the threats continued despite her making court initially expressed its reluctance to quash the FIR, describing the allegations as "undoubtedly serious" and representative of the darker misuse of social media. However, it agreed to do so, noting that the decision was made solely out of deference to the express wishes of the complainant and her mother, and in the interest of her High Court, therefore, agreed to quash the FIR in the case registered under the Indian Penal Code and Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) involving allegations of criminal intimidation of a minor school court further acknowledged the complainant's concerns regarding the social and emotional burden posed by the continued pendency of the case, particularly in the context of the court also recorded its disapproval of the petitioner's alleged conduct, calling it a "deeply troubling pattern of coercion and intimidation" against a school-going minor, involving threats to publish private photographs in exchange for money."Such behaviour, if true, reflects a gross misuse of digital platforms and an alarming disregard for consent and personal dignity," the court court further directed that the petitioner must not establish any form of contact with the complainant or her family. It also warned that if the said photographs were to resurface in any form or medium, the complainant would be at liberty to seek revival of the a measure of accountability, the Delhi High Court has asked the petitioner to perform one month of community service at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital. It has also imposed a cost of Rs 50,000 on him, which will be deposited towards the 'Army Welfare Fund Battle Casualties'.Must Watch

Mhada will give Rs 20,000 rent to residents of dangerous buildings to shift elsewhere
Mumbai: Mhada will provide a monthly rent of Rs 20,000 to tenants and residents of 96 dangerous buildings who independently arrange for their own alternative accommodation. The housing board will also arrange to lease 400 tenements for them. Mhada had declared these 96 cessed buildings as "extremely dangerous" during its annual pre-monsoon survey. The board has decided that all expenses incurred under monthly rent as well as the lease of transit units through external agencies, including maintenance, will be recoverable from the private developers or cooperative housing societies which are undertaking redevelopment of the concerned properties. This financial liability will be applicable from the date on which rental assistance is granted or transit units are leased. On Tuesday, Sanjeev Jaiswal, vice president and CEO, instructed Mhada's Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board to issue a public advertisement to lease 400 transit tenements, measuring between 180 and 250 sq ft, through external agencies for a period of three years. "Given the urgent need to relocate them to safe premises, the Board requires immediate access to temporary housing facilities. At present, it has only 786 transit tenements available, making it unfeasible to accommodate all affected persons," said the Mhada spokesperson. The early onset of monsoon and prospect of higher rainfall has compounded fears. There are 13,091 cessed buildings in the island city. Mhada manages 20,591 transit tenements which are used as temporary accommodation for evacuees due to structural repairs, building collapse, redevelopment constraints due to narrow plots, or demolition linked to road widening.
