Girl faces financial hurdles for higher edu
1 2 Berhampur: A 20-year-old girl from a remote village in Gajapati district, who passed Plus II (Arts) with over 77% marks, is worried about her admission to Plus III. Parents of Sibani Gouda of Bebir village in Aliganda panchayat cannot provide money for her higher studies. And only two days are left to apply online for Plus III admissions. Admission fees for Plus III (Arts) differ from college to college. While it is Rs 1,800 in govt colleges, it varies from Rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000 in aided colleges, depending on the development fees. Private colleges collect up to Rs 20,000, sources said. While her father and mother work as daily-wage labourers in Cuttack, her 17-year-old brother suffers from a mental disorder and is undergoing treatment in Cuttack. Sibani stays in her uncle's house in the village. Sibani had been forced to drop one year after the HSC examination in 2022 due to financial constraints. "She applied to take admission for Plus II in a private college in Cuttack. But dropped out, as we could not arrange the money," said Saheb Gouda, her father. She took admission in a private school in Adava in 2023 with borrowed money, he said. The college authorities allowed it. I cleared the admission fees of Rs 8,500 after my mother received the first installment of Subhadra Yojana in September and borrowed the rest," said Sibani. Her father said his daughter is very ken on studies. "I can manage the admission fees, but there are other expenses for her studies and I cannot provide it," he said. Regional education director, Berhampur, Sidharth Shankar Padhy said they would not allow any student to discontinue their studies due to financial problems. "We will ask the nearby college principal to approach the student and ensure her admission in Plus III," he said.

Odisha CM launches Rs 275 crore projects in Bhadrak
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 13 developmental projects worth around Rs 275 crore at Balia Pada in Bhadrak district. Among the 13 initiatives, nine were inaugurated while foundation stones were laid for four new projects. During the event, the Chief Minister made several major announcements for Bhadrak, including the establishment of a government university and the much-anticipated medical college, for which the foundation stone will be laid soon. Highlighting industrial development in the district, Majhi announced that Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) will invest Rs 4,377 crore to set up a Technical Textile Complex in Bhadrak. Additionally, MCPI Private Limited will establish an HMLS polyester manufacturing unit with an investment of around Rs 2,224 crore. He also announced the beautification of all martyr memorial sites in Bhadrak, adding cultural and heritage significance to the region. "Since our government came to power, we have fast-tracked Bhadrak's development, a land known for revolutionaries. We are committed to fulfilling every promise made to the people without wasting a single moment," he said during his address. He also highlighted major decisions taken by the state government in the last 12 months, which include the launching of Subhadra Yojana, providing farmers Rs 800 more per quintal of paddy, opening all four gates of the Jagannath Temple, and allocation of Rs 500 crore corpus fund for rituals and services at the Jagannath Temple. The Chief Minister announced that a detailed report on the government's one-year achievements will be presented to the public on June 12. Speaking on the state's development vision, Majhi said, 'Livelihood and employment are vital for growth. We are continuously working to improve citizens' financial well-being through agriculture, allied activities, and industrial development.' He criticised the previous government for spending 24 years "only painting pictures of development" under the guise of providing world-class education and healthcare, without delivering concrete outcomes. 'True development has just begun,' he asserted. 'In the next few years, Odisha's primary education landscape will be completely transformed—not with flashy slogans, but with real outcomes,' he said, targeting the earlier regime's 5T (Technology, Teamwork, Transparency, Time, and Transformation) campaign. Highlighting the government's industrial momentum, he said, 'In just 120 days, under the 'Utkarsa Odisha' initiative, projects worth over Rs 80,000 crore have been launched. On May 22 alone, 10 projects worth Rs 1.65 lakh crore received approvals. This marks the beginning of an industrial revolution in Odisha, with every district, including Bhadrak, being part of this transformative journey.'

BJP ministers hand over performance reports to CM Mohan Majhi
BHUBANESWAR: With the BJP government set to complete one year in office on June 12, all ministers have submitted their annual performance report cards to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Informing this to mediapersons on Sunday, Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandansaid these reports not only give a detailed insight on the progress achieved over the past year, but also outline strategic plans for the future. The chief minister will review these reports, he said. 'We had made 21 promises in our election manifesto out of which 18 have either been fulfilled or initiated. Seven major promises including Subhadra Yojana and additional input subsidy to farmers over and above the minimum support price of paddy have been fulfilled. Work has begun on the remaining 11 promises,' Harichandan said. Described this as a significant achievement for the first year of the BJP government, the minister said it will fulfil all the promises made to the people. The ruling BJP has planned to celebrate one year completion of the government in a grand manner. It will be a three-day affair from June 11 to 13. The state-level function will be held at Janata Maidan here where the Majhi government will give its report card to the people.

Her life and work are a source of inspiration for generations and she is a unique example of women's empowerment, good governance and social service which are reflected in the policies of the state government, he added. 'Ahilyabai has immortalised herself in Indian history with her justice, courage and unparalleled dedication to her people. Her life is a source of inspiration for us, guiding us on the path of good governance and social welfare. We too need to promote justice, education and equality in our society,' Majhi stressed. Describing Subhadra Yojana as a revolutionary scheme for the empowerment of women, the chief minister said the aim of the scheme is to help them become financially self-reliant and socially progressive. 'If we look at the current governance system, we see that many state governments have taken inspiration from Ahilyabai's ideals. Our government is giving importance to rural development, women's empowerment, education and health which is in line with Ahilyabai's vision,' he said. Speaker Surama Padhy, deputy CM Pravati Parida and several ministers attended the function.

Majhi emphasised Ahilyabai's enduring legacy in Indian history, citing her commitment to justice, courage and public service. He drew parallels between her governance principles and contemporary initiatives, including the state's Subhadra Yojana scheme for women's empowerment. Majhi also highlighted recent developments in women's leadership, referencing defence minister Rajnath Singh's briefing on Operation Sindoor and women's crucial role in the maintenance of national security. "Operation Sindoor symbolises female power. Operation Sindoor is not just the 'name' of a military operation; it is a symbol of female power," Majhi stated, connecting it to local traditions like 'Sabitri Brata'. He said a few days ago, 'Sabitri Brata' was celebrated. "Sati Sabitri fought with god of death, Yamraj, for her sindoor. To uphold the dignity of that sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a solemn vow," he said. Majhi further said that anyone who looks at the sindoor of the women of this country with contempt will surely meet Yamraj. "This is the warning given by the PM. This country is in safe hands. The whole nation echoes today, 'If Modi is there, we are safe'," he said.
