He highlighted that 500 Palestinians were killed and nearly 4,000 injured during food distribution operations in Gaza in May 2025, describing the deaths as a "disgrace and an affront to human dignity." Barrot stressed that France and Europe are ready to contribute to ensuring the proper distribution of food in Gaza. Since May 27, Israel and the United States have been carrying out a limited aid distribution plan outside the framework of the United Nations and international organizations. Reports indicate that Israeli forces have opened fire on Palestinians lining up to receive aid, forcing them to choose between starvation or being shot. As of last Wednesday, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported that 549 Palestinians had been killed and over 4,066 injured while trying to access these "Israeli-American aid centers." Barrot emphasized that there is no justification for the continued Israeli attacks on Gaza and reiterated: 'We are determined to recognize the State of Palestine. This will happen within a joint framework that encourages all parties to create the conditions necessary for the establishment of this state.' On May 22, 2024, Norway, Ireland, and Spain officially announced their recognition of the State of Palestine, effective May 28. Prior to that, eight EU countries had already done so: Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, the Greek Cypriot Administration, and Sweden.
To date, 149 out of the 193 UN member states have recognized the State of Palestine.

Earlier Friday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that Washington hoped Canada would suspend the tax as a gesture of 'goodwill.' Trump's move to terminate trade talks came amid rising tensions over the 3% digital services tax, which targets large multinational firms such as Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta that provide digital services to Canadian users. 'Stabilizing Relations' While Canada had been exempt from some of the broader tariffs imposed by Trump on other countries, it remains subject to a separate set of trade duties. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has imposed steep tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobile imports. Canada is one of the largest exporters of steel and aluminum to the United States. On June 19, Carney said Canada would 'adjust' its 25% retaliatory tariffs on US steel and aluminum if no agreement is reached within 30 days. On Friday, the Canadian prime minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to 'continue to conduct these complex negotiations in the best interest of Canadians.' Carney previously said a successful outcome would mean to 'stabilize the trading relationship with the United States,' ensuring 'ready access to US markets for Canadian companies,' while also 'not having our hands tied in terms of our dealings with the rest of the world.' Trump and Carney met earlier in June on the sidelines of the G7 Summit hosted by Canada, where G7 leaders urged the US president to de-escalate trade tensions with key partners. The UNHCR reported that it distributed cash assistance worth $2.7 million, benefiting approximately 17,000 refugee families living in host communities. It also stressed that despite this funding, it faces significant pressures resulting from budget cuts, which have significantly impacted core activities. Funding cuts, in early May, led to a significant reduction in the level of support allocated to people with special needs, by nearly 90% compared to 2024, the UNHCR indicated. In addition, the UNHCR noted that it had organized the transfer of more than 800 refugees from Azraq and Zaatari camps to receive specialized health care outside the camps. More than 15,000 registered Syrian refugees returned to Syria in May 2025, representing a 45% increase compared to April, when approximately 10,500 refugees returned, according to the UNHCR. The total number of returnees from Jordan to Syria from December 8, 2024, to the end of May 2025 reached approximately 75,500 refugees.
