IBA Karachi, PNSC to support future leaders through scholarship endowment

KARACHI: In a significant step toward strengthening access to quality higher education, IBA Karachi has joined hands with Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) to support future leaders through scholarship endowment. PNSC has contributed Rs 10 million to IBA for the establishment of a perpetual scholarship endowment.
The cheque handover ceremony was held at Main Campus, IBA Karachi, in which Sultan A. Chawla, Chairman, PNSC, presented the contribution to Dr S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA Karachi. This partnership marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration between two institutions committed to building capacity and creating pathways for underserved communities.

Petrol, HSD and furnace oil: Rs2.5/litre carbon levy imposed

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has proposed to impose a carbon levy of Rs2.5 per litre on petrol, high-speed diesel (HSD) and furnace oil in the next fiscal year 2025-26. The new tax will be implemented alongside the existing petroleum levy on petroleum products and is expected to generate around Rs46 billion revenue for the government during the fiscal year 2025-26. It will not apply to kerosene oil and light diesel oil (LDO). The same levy will be increased to Rs5 per litre to generate Rs95 billion in fiscal year 2026-27, sources said. The funds collected will be allocated towards green budgeting initiatives. The measure comes after the government concluded negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the fiscal year 2026 budget. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

PSX hits record high

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed at a new record high on Tuesday, driven by investor optimism ahead of the upcoming budget. However, trading activity declined sharply as market participants remained cautious, resulting in significantly lower volumes and values. Despite slow trading activity, the benchmark KSE-100 Index settled comfortably above the 122,000 mark. The KSE-100 Index climbed by 383.44 points, or 0.32 percent, to settle at 122,024.44 points on Tuesday compared to 121,641 points on Monday. The index fluctuated within a narrow band amid uncertainty surrounding the budget announcement. The index touched an intraday high of 122,611.53 points and a low of 121,590 points. On Tuesday, BRIndex100 closed at 13,079.70 which was 45.45 points or 0.35 percent higher than the previous close. Total volume was 481.593 million. Meanwhile, BRIndex30 lost 70.24 points or 0.18 percent and ended at 37,957.57 points with the total volume remaining 298.193 million. Investors exercised caution during Tuesday's session, adopting a 'wait-and-see' approach ahead of the federal budget announcement scheduled for later in the day, an analyst at Darson Securities noted. This cautious sentiment translated into a significant slowdown in market activity compared to the previous day. The ready market turnover fell to 592.95 million shares from 854.617 million shares the day before. Similarly, the traded value dropped to Rs 21.82 billion from Rs 25.79 billion. However, despite the lower volume and value, total market capitalization rose by Rs 40 billion, reaching Rs 14.768 trillion from Rs 14.728 trillion. Cnergyico PK led the volume charts with 61.37 million shares traded; its stock closed at Rs 8.03. K-Electric Ltd. was the second most active stock, with 59.08 million shares changing hands, though its price fell and closed at Rs 5.62. Dewan Cement also saw heavy trading with 45.55 million shares, closing significantly higher at Rs 15.52. The day's top gainer was Sapphire Fibres Limited, whose value surged by Rs 96.67 to close at Rs 1,152.79. Sapphire Textile Mills Limited also saw a substantial increase of Rs 43.08, closing at Rs. 1,143.08. On the losing side, PIA Holding Company LimitedB was the biggest decliner, with its price dropping by Rs 2,879.00 to close at PKR 25,910.98. Khyber Textile Mills Limited also experienced a significant fall of Rs 273.52, ending the day at Rs 2,461.65. Out of 473 total active companies, 230 saw their share prices increase, 200 registered declines, and 43 remained unchanged. Meanwhile, BR Automobile Assembler Index closed at 21,149.85 with a net positive change of 134.49 points or 0.64 percent with a total turnover of 5.627 million. BR Cement Index gained 16.34 points or 0.16 percent and ended at 10,258.58 points. BR Commercial Banks Index closed at 36,503.30 with a net positive change of 285.32 points or a 0.79 percent on 56.082 million shares. BR Power Generation and Distribution Index ended at 21,643.76 points with a net positive change of 189.07 or 0.88 percent and a total turnover of 63.67 million shares. BR Oil and Gas Index closed at 11,516.48 with a net negative change of 25.75 points or 0.22 percent and a total turnover of 18.864 million. While BR Tech. & Comm. Index finished at 2,986.40 with a net negative change of 16.41 points or 0.55 percent, with a total turnover of 41.184 million shares. Topline sales desk cited that the stock market witnessed a range-bound session on Tuesday, with the index fluctuating within a narrow band amid uncertainty surrounding the budget announcement. ISLAMABAD: The federal government has reduced subsidy for power sector by 13 percent to Rs 1.036 trillion for FY 2025-26 from Rs 1.190 trillion for FY 2024-25. According to federal budget documents, total subsidies decreased by 14 percent – from the revised estimates of Rs 1.378.489 trillion for FY 2024-25 to Rs 1.186.036 trillion for FY 2025-26. The amount of subsidy for Inter-Disco tariff differential has been slashed to Rs 249.136 billion for 2025-26 from allocation of Rs 276 billion for FY 2024-25, showing a reduction of 9.8 per cent. Subsidy for tariff differential to agritubewells in Balochistan will be Rs 4 billion in 2025-26 from Rs 9.5 billion in 2024-25. Power tariff hike: govt reaches 'understanding' with IMF The amount of subsidies for merged districts of KP erstwhile FATA has been reduced over 38 per cent to Rs 40 billion for FY 2025-26 from Rs 65 billion for FY 2024-25. The government has also slashed the amount of subsidy for AJK by 31.5 per cent to Rs 74 billion for 2025-26 from Rs 108 billion for FY 2024-25. The amount under Pakistan Energy Resolving Fund (PERA) will remain at Rs 48 billion for FY 2025-26 like FY 2024-25. This amount is meant to pay Rs 5 billion every month to Chinese IPPs established under China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). For K-Electric, the amount of subsidy has been reduced over 28 per cent to Rs 125 billion for FY 2025-26 from Rs 174 for the FY 2024-25, however, Rs 1 billion have been allocated as subsidy for agriculture tubewells in Balochistan for FY 2025-26 against Rs 500 million for FY 2024-25. The government budgeted Rs 95 billion to IPPs in FY 2025-26 against Rs 115 billion in revised estimates for the FY 2024-25, which implies that no amount had been allocated on the account at the time of announcement of budget 2024-25. And allocated Rs 400 billion subsidy for 2025-26 under the head of lump sum provision for power subsidy against revised Rs394 billion and actual allocation of Rs 509 billion for 2023-24. The purpose of this allocation has not been mentioned in the budget documents. The government earmarked Rs 1.200 billion as subsidy for petroleum for FY 2025-26, against budgeted amount of Rs 18.400 billion in 2023-24, of which Rs 1,200 billion will be as shortfall in guaranteed throughout of PEPCO, against Rs 2,400 billion for FY 2024-25. However, no amount has been allocated to meet shortfall to Asia Petroleum and domestic consumers through SNGPL (RLNG). For FY 2024-25, an amount of Rs 16 billion had been earmarked on these accounts. For Passco, Rs 20 billion have been earmarked for wheat reserve stock during FY 2025-26, of which Rs 14 billion will be meant for wheat reserve stock and Rs 6 billion for cost differential for sale of wheat in 2025-26. An amount of Rs 24 billion has been estimated for Industries and Production for FY 2025-26 against Rs 68 billion for FY 2024-25. Of this, Rs 9 billion has been earmarked for subsidy-incentive on electric vehicle scheme and Rs 15 billion for USC sugar subsidy/arrears. No amount has been allocated for PM's USC package and Ramzan package for 2025-26 though Rs 55 billion had been earmarked for FY 2024-25. The amount of subsidy under the head of other subsidies has been earmarked at Rs 104.7 billion for 2025-26 against actual allocation of Rs 75.012 billion and revised allocation of Rs 90.099 billion. Details of total amount of Rs 75.012 billion for other subsidies are as follows: (i) wheat to Gilgit Baltistan, Rs 20 billion;(ii) subsidy on import of urea fertilizer, Rs 15 billion; (iii) subsidy on NAYA Pakistan Housing Society, Rs 1 billion; (iv)mark-up subsidy and risk sharing scheme for farm mechanization/Kissan package, Rs7 billion; (vi) refinance and credit guaranteed scheme (SME Asaan Finance) Rs1 billion; (vii) subsidy for enhancing financing to SME sector Rs 2 billion; (viii) markup subsidy to support phasing out of the SBP's refinancing scheme, Rs 30 billion (ix) provision of 5 kms radius gas scheme Rs 5 billion; (x) EFS enhanced plan-Exim and related scheme Rs 5 billion; (xii) (markup subsidy on low cost housing Rs 5 billion; and (xiii) Metro Bus subsidy Rs 7.300 billion.
