Death of Vipanjika & child: Kerala HC seeks Centre's response on plea for repatriation of bodies
Justice N Nagaresh was considering the petition by S Sheela, the maternal aunt of Vipanjika. Besides repatriation, Sheela has also sought a directive for a fair and proper investigation into the deaths, alleging that Vipanjika had suffered persistent mental harassment, emotional abuse and threats at the hands of her husband, Nidheesh Mohan, and other in-laws. HC instructed the petitioner to implead Nidheesh Mohan as he is the legal claimant concerning decisions on the repatriation of mortal remains.
The petition will be further considered on Thursday.
According to the petitioner, she is currently the only close relative available in Kerala, as Vipanjika's mother, Shylaja, has travelled to Sharjah to facilitate the repatriation process, while the deceased's only sibling resides in Canada. Vipanjika and her daughter were reportedly found hanging at their residence in Sharjah on July 8. The petitioner alleged that the unnatural and shocking nature of the incident — particularly the alleged hanging of a one-year-old child — raises serious suspicion, pointing to a possible case of murder or abetment to suicide.

Sheela further contended that Vipanjika had repeatedly confided in her mother and close relatives about the severe mental agony and abuse she faced in her marital home. She had allegedly shared photographs showing injuries from physical assault, allegedly inflicted by her husband.
Following the incident, Shylaja lodged a complaint with the Kundara police against the in-laws, alleging consistent physical and mental cruelty, particularly over the alleged insufficient gold and dowry. The petitioner also sought a direction to the Indian Embassy in the UAE to ensure that the post-mortem and other medico-legal formalities are conducted in accordance with internationally accepted standards and protocols.

Karnataka smart meter case: Court orders registration of complaint against minister George, officials
Bengaluru: The simmering controversy over the tendering process of smart meters in Karnataka took an interesting turn with the special court for elected representatives on Wednesday directing enforcement agencies to register a private complaint report (PCR) against energy minister KJ George and others. Based on a complaint filed by BJP functionaries CN Ashwath Narayan, SR Vishwanath, and Dheeraj Muniraj, special court judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat directed officials to submit a status report on the complaint filed with the Lokayukta in April 2025 pertaining to the same issue, besides registering a PCR. The complaint also named additional chief secretary (energy) Gaurav Gupta, previous Bescom MD Mahantesh Bilagi, and Bescom technical director SG Ramesh as accused in the case. The complainants alleged that all the accused did not comply with the tender rules while rolling out the smart meter tender. "A tender was floated in Sept 2024 to provide smart meter services, and it was allotted to one of the bidders, a Davanagere-based shell company. Rather than floating separate tenders for each of the Escoms (electricity supply companies), tenders were floated only for Bescom. The entire process not only violated provisions under the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Act, but also went against the guidelines laid down by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission," the complaint read. BJP legislators have been hitting out at the state govt and accusing George, who also holds the position of Bescom chairman, of misappropriation in the smart meter tender ever since the issue snowballed into a major controversy during the budget session of legislature. Nothing illegal: George Reacting sharply to the development, the minister retorted: "Is there a court order? If so, give a copy to me and I will react to that." Hitting out at the BJP, he added: "There is a group comprising Ashwath Narayan and others. They have already filed a petition in the high court and have also complained to the governor. Now, a case has also been filed in the people's representatives court. There is nothing illegal and the tender process has been done according to the law. I'm ready to explain everything if needed. Rather than indulging in hit-and-run methods, let them produce documents to the court and our advocates will also argue. Eventually, I will bow to whatever the court orders." BJP demands George's ouster BJP legislator CN Ashwath Narayan on Thursday demanded the dismissal of energy minister KJ George. "There is no malice — this is in public interest," he said, alleging that contracts were given to blacklisted firms, regulations were flouted, and inflated rates were imposed. Narayan questioned whether George would resign, before urging chief minister Siddaramaiah to act immediately to uphold justice and govt accountability

Blast survivors still hopeful guilty will be punished by apex court
Blast survivors still hopeful guilty will be punished by apex court MUMBAI: Reacting to the Supreme Court stay on the HC judgment acquitting all 12 accused, several survivors of the 11/7 train blasts said they still hoped that the guilty would be punished and that, if the 12 men were really not guilty, the real culprits would be found. Others, wearied over nearly two decades of an emotional rollercoaster ride, chose silence. The prospect of another legal battle daunted them. It was Pravin Varma's birthday on July 11, 2006, when he fell victim to the terror attack. The brave graphic designer endured years of treatment. He said, "We were very disappointed to hear about the HC verdict. I hope SC gives a better judgement and punishes those who are guilty. One Pakistani was accused of being a mastermind of these blasts. Are there no links to him here in Mumbai? Plus 20 years is an awfully long time for even this judgment. We are really sorry about what state is in India now." Chartered accountant Chirag Chauhan had suffered serious injuries to his spine which left his lower body paralysed. He has since been wheelchair-bound. He said, "From what I have read in the news, SC's emphasis is on the HC judgment not being used as a precedent. I believe the SC might review the HC judgement subsequently. I have some hope from the SC for justice." He said, "I felt some hope after learning about the SC order. I hope the authorities go through the evidence thoroughly and convict the real perpetrators in order to send a strong message. If the arrested accused are innocent, it means the real perpetrators are still roaming the streets of Mumbai scot-free. There is a possibility they could be part of another sinister plan. Acquittals will only embolden other attackers," Pitale said. Subhash Saboo, who lost his father Nathmal, said, "With the SC staying the HC ruling and hearing the state's appeal, we are hopeful justice will be served to all the victims like my family and the guilty will get punished." Another survivor Hansraj Kanojiya said, "The perpetrators should be punished as soon as possible. This case should not drag for a long time in the SC. The administration knows who the actual criminal is. We hope for a positive result." Some other families have closed themselves off, unwilling to share their grief any longer.
