Death of Vipanjika & child: Kerala HC seeks Centre's response on plea for repatriation of bodies

Time of India16-07-2025
Kochi: High court on Wednesday sought instructions from the Union govt on a petition seeking the repatriation of the mortal remains of Vipanjika Maniyan, a native of Keralapuram in Kollam, and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Vaibhavi, who were found dead in Sharjah, UAE.
Justice N Nagaresh was considering the petition by S Sheela, the maternal aunt of Vipanjika. Besides repatriation, Sheela has also sought a directive for a fair and proper investigation into the deaths, alleging that Vipanjika had suffered persistent mental harassment, emotional abuse and threats at the hands of her husband, Nidheesh Mohan, and other in-laws. HC instructed the petitioner to implead Nidheesh Mohan as he is the legal claimant concerning decisions on the repatriation of mortal remains.
The petition will be further considered on Thursday.
According to the petitioner, she is currently the only close relative available in Kerala, as Vipanjika's mother, Shylaja, has travelled to Sharjah to facilitate the repatriation process, while the deceased's only sibling resides in Canada. Vipanjika and her daughter were reportedly found hanging at their residence in Sharjah on July 8. The petitioner alleged that the unnatural and shocking nature of the incident — particularly the alleged hanging of a one-year-old child — raises serious suspicion, pointing to a possible case of murder or abetment to suicide.

Sheela further contended that Vipanjika had repeatedly confided in her mother and close relatives about the severe mental agony and abuse she faced in her marital home. She had allegedly shared photographs showing injuries from physical assault, allegedly inflicted by her husband.
Following the incident, Shylaja lodged a complaint with the Kundara police against the in-laws, alleging consistent physical and mental cruelty, particularly over the alleged insufficient gold and dowry. The petitioner also sought a direction to the Indian Embassy in the UAE to ensure that the post-mortem and other medico-legal formalities are conducted in accordance with internationally accepted standards and protocols.

Pakistan chocolates, Chidambaram jibe — 10 Highlights from Amit Shah's Lok Sabha speech on Operation Sindoor

Indian security forces have killed three gunmen who were involved in an attack on Hindu tourists in Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday. The heavily-armed men were killed in a military operation on Monday, more than three months after 26 people were gunned down in a popular resort town of Indian Kashmir on April 22, Amit Shah informed. Amit Shah told Lok Sabha that top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Suleman, along with Afghan and Jibran—also A-category terrorists—were killed in Operation Mahadev, a joint mission by the Army, CRPF, and J&K Police. "... In the Operation Mahadev, Suleman alias Faizal..., Afghan and Jibran, these three terrorists were killed in a joint operation of the Indian Army, CRPF and J&K Police... Suleman was an A-category commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Afghan was an A-category Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist. And Jibran was also an A-grade terrorist... All three terrorists who killed our citizens in the Baisaran valley have been eliminated...," Shah said during the second debate on the Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha. The BJP leader said, " All three terrorists - Suleman, Afghan and Jibran were killed in yesterday's operation. The people who used to supply food to them were detained earlier. Once the bodies of these terrorists were brought to Srinagar, they were identified by those who were kept detained by our agencies." Amit Shah told Parliament that the three terrorists killed in Kashmir were confirmed to be involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack. Detainees who had aided the terrorists identified the bodies. Weapons recovered—an M-9 and an AK-47—were flown to Chandigarh for forensic testing, which matched them to cartridges found at the attack site. Shah said six forensic experts confirmed the match via video call. He added that Pakistani voter IDs, Pakistani-made chocolates, and weapons were also recovered from the slain terrorists. Operation Mahadev was launched on May 22, 2025, said Amit Shah in Lok Sabha. He added that he reached Srinagar by 5:30 PM, and a high-level security meeting was held that evening, where it was decided that the terrorists must not be allowed to flee the country. In surgical and air strikes, India attacked targets in PoK; in Operation Sindoor, targets were 100 km inside Pakistan, said Amit Shah, adding ,'On 30th April, there was a meeting of the CCS, in which the security forces were given complete operational freedom. Operation Sindoor was launched on 7th May and carried out between 1:04 am and 1:24 am. In this operation, nine terror sites in Pakistan were destroyed. No Pakistani civilians were killed in this attack.' India's armed forces crippled Pakistan's defence systems, it had no choice but to request India to halt attacks, Amit Shah told Lok Sabha on Tuesday., adding 'Operation Sindoor exposed state sponsored terrorism in Pakistan', he added. Amit Shah said the NIA interrogated over 1,055 witnesses after the Pahalgam attack. He added that three Pakistani terrorists had stayed with locals Basheer and Parvez, who helped them reach Baisaran with AK-47 and Mi-9 guns. The terrorists, also linked to the APCO terror attack, were killed, and the two locals arrested. In classic ruling party fashion, Amit Shah took a customary swipe at Nehru, saying the former PM had 'bid goodbye to Assam' during the 1962 war and declared a unilateral ceasefire in 1948 despite Indian forces being in a strong position to reclaim PoK. In Lok Sabha, Amit Shah criticised Congress leader P. Chidambaram for questioning proof of Pakistani involvement in the Pahalgam attack, accusing him of giving a "clean chit" to Pakistan. Shah also invoked history, stating that in 1948, Indian forces were poised to reclaim PoK, but then PM Nehru declared a unilateral ceasefire. 'Terrorists were killed and you're not happy' Amid protests by the Opposition MPs during his address in the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said to them, 'Terrorists got killed and you are not happy? You should be celebrating.' He further urged MP Akhilesh Yadav to let him complete his address and display facts regarding Operation Mahadev. 'Terror infrastructure destroyed in J&K' Amit Shah briefs on ground situation of Jammu-Kashmir. 'Between 2004-2014, there were 7200 terror incidents, 714 civilians died, 1068 security personnel died. Between 2015-2025, 1525 terror incidents occured, 324 civilians died, 542 security personnel died and number of terrorists killed has increased by 162%,' lists Mr. Shah. He asserts that revocation of Article 370 has destroyed terror infrastructure in J&K and that no talks will be held with Hurriyat as it is a 'terror group'. On Monday, the three terrorists were killed in Operation Mahadev in an intense firefight with security forces in the Harwan area near Dachigam National Park of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. The anti-terror Operation Mahadev took place in the general area of Lidwas, Chinar Corps of Indian Army said. "OP MAHADEV - Contact established in General Area Lidwas. Operation in progress" the Chinar Corp said in a previous post on X.

Inaccurate info being circulated in Nimisha Priya case: Official sources

New Delhi, July 29 (UNI) Amid reports about cancellation of the death sentence of Nimisha Priya -- an Indian national sentenced to death in 2020 by a Yemeni court for the murder of her business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi -- official sources today said such information was inaccurate and did not reflect the current status of the matter. Recently, a statement from the office of Indian grand mufti Kanthapuram AP Abubacker Musliyar claimed that 'the death sentence of Nimisha Priya, which was previously suspended, has been overturned.' The statement further said that a high-level meeting held in Sanaa had decided to 'completely cancel the death sentence that was temporarily suspended earlier.' However, official sources have indicated that this information is not accurate. Addressing the media on July 17, official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Randhir Jaiswal, described the matter as 'sensitive' and emphasized that the government was providing all possible assistance. 'This is a very sensitive matter, and the government of India has been offering all possible assistance in the case,' Jaiswal said during the weekly briefing. 'We have provided legal support and appointed a lawyer to assist the family. Regular consular visits by her family have also been facilitated, and we are in constant touch with local authorities in Yemen, as well as with the family members.' Nimisha Priya, 38, is a native of Kerala's Palakkad district. She moved to Yemen in 2008 in search of better employment opportunities. A trained nurse by profession, she later entered into a business partnership with Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi, and together they ran a clinic in the capital, Sanaa. Jaiswal added that the government had made concerted efforts in recent days to secure more time for Nimisha Priya's family to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the victim's family — a provision permitted under the Yemeni law, which incorporates elements of Sharia. Local authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution, which was originally scheduled for July 16, following India's diplomatic intervention. 'We continue to closely follow the matter and render all possible assistance,' Jaiswal said. 'We are also in touch with some friendly governments, seeking a favourable outcome.' Meanwhile, Abdul Fattah Mahdi, the brother of slain Yemeni businessman Talal Abdo Mahdi, has demanded the immediate execution of Nimisha Priya. In a social media post, Abdul Fattah shared a formal letter addressed to the attorney general of Yemen, stating "his family continues to seek full enforcement of the retributive justice verdict without delay". He also refuted claims made by the office of Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar that an agreement had been reached during a meeting reportedly attended by Yemeni officials. UNI AAB PRS
