Basildon bike recycling scheme gives unwanted bikes new lease of life
An initiative in Basildon is helping give bikes destined for landfill a new lease of life. Basildon Council teamed up with The Active Wellbeing Society, Sociability Care for Calais, and Signpost 200 to refurbish and donate these bikes to residents over the past two years. The initiative, supported by Sport England and the Essex Cycle Grant, aims to reduce waste, lower carbon footprints, and enhance residents' lives. Aidan McGurran, councillor responsible for environment and leisure, said: "These bikes are more than just a way to get around - they are helping people find new jobs, cycle to school, stay active, and take control of their health. "It is a simple, effective solution that benefits both the people of Basildon and our environment. "If you have a bike you no longer use, I urge you to donate it to such a worthy cause." Unused bikes can be dropped off at Barleylands Recycling Centre for refurbishment and redistribution.
