Stephen Thompson picks Joaquin Buckley to beat Kamaru Usman: 'Guy's evolving every time'
Stephen Thompson is impressed with the evolution in his former UFC foe's game.
Thompson (17-7-1 MMA, 12-7-1 UFC) was knocked out by Joaquin Buckley (21-6 MMA, 11-4 UFC) in his most recent outing at UFC 307 this past October. Buckley went on to stop former interim champion Colby Covington, and now draws former welterweight champ Kamaru Usman (20-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) on June 14 in the UFC on ESPN 69 headliner at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
"Wonderboy" finds it hard to bet against Buckley.
"Buckely's been on a tear, man," Thompson told Inside Fighting. "The guy is hungry, he's got great wrestling. You saw what it did to Colby Covington. I think it's going to be a tough night for both. But I think Kamaru Usman is going to do the same old jab, shoot for the leg, maybe a little bit of boxing. Buckley, you don't know what he's going to pull out of the hat.
"The guy's evolving every time I see this guy fight, so that's what's going to make this fight so interesting for sure. Buckley's wanted it. He's wanted to move up the rankings, and Kamaru Usman is kind of working his way down a little bit, but he's still part of the welterweight division and in the top five. I'm kind of leaning towards Buckley."
Former title challenger Thompson will look to rebound from his loss to Buckley when he takes on rising welterweight Gabriel Bonfim (17-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) at UFC on ESPN 70 on July 12 from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Wiklacz is unbeaten in his past seven fights. The 28-year-old retained his KSW bantamweight title three times during his time with the promotion, most recently submitting Sebastian Przybysz last June – going 4-1 against his fellow Polish fighter. Daniil Donchenko tried to replicate 'TUF 33' house experience for UFC 319 final
CHICAGO – Daniil Donchenko met the media Wednesday ahead of his fight at UFC 319. Donchenko (11-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) meets Rodrigo Sezinando (8-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in the Season 33 welterweight final of "The Ultimate Fighter." Their fight takes place on the preliminary card at United Center in Chicago. At media day, Donchenko took questions from media members before his "TUF" finale fight. The 24-year-old Ukrainian fighter said he's trying to replicate his experience in the house now that fight week has arrived – so he didn't get the full experience of having everyone hit him up once the MMA world knew he was a "TUF" finalist. "I deleted my Instagram for fight week," Donchenko told MMA Junkie on Wednesday at his media day. "I tried to put myself to the position I was in the house – without phone, without (everything). It was the best time. You could stay with yourself. (I was) in the best shape. I tried to keep it (like that for fight week)." Check out Donchenko's full media day interview in the video above.

Rodrigo Sezinando: Hard 'TUF 33' experience got appetite sharpened up for UFC 319
CHICAGO – Rodrigo Sezinando met the media Wednesday ahead of his fight at UFC 319. Sezinando (8-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) meets Daniil Donchenko (11-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in the Season 33 welterweight final of "The Ultimate Fighter." Their fight takes place on the preliminary card at United Center in Chicago. At media day, Sezinando took questions from media members before his "TUF" finale fight. Sezinando said taping the show earlier this year made it hard for him to keep things secret that he had reached the finals of the tournament ahead of the show's broadcast. But he said the experience on the show hardened him up for his upcoming experience in the UFC. "I definitely loved spending the whole month there. It's definitely tough. I did something for the first time in my life – two fights in 13 days, two weight cuts. It was savage for me and really new. I changed a lot about myself and learned a lot about myself. "From Day 1 that I stepped into the house, I knew it was going to be a hard time. But I also knew I'd make new friends, have a good time here and be the last man standing." Sezinando said Donchenko being one of his teammates under coach Daniel Cormier on the show is of no consequence to him. Now that his UFC career is about to start, it's all about business for the Vancouver-based Brazilian. "He's like everyone else in my mind. He's just one more guy in my way, and he's going to be losing at the end of the fight. I'm really secure right now, I'm healthy and I'm ready to be 'The Ultimate Fighter.'"
