Village of nurse on Yemen death row prays for miracle
KOCHI: Vinitha Radhakrishnan's long vigil for her childhood friend Nimisha Priya teeters on the edge of desperation at the thought of what July 16 might bring.
That's the date set by Yemen to execute the 37-year-old expat nurse from Kerala, convicted in 2018 of murdering her Yemeni business partner and kept on death row at the central prison in Sana'a since.
It's a reality Vinitha and everyone else in Poonkayam village of Palakkad district still haven't reconciled to.
"We can never imagine Nimisha killing someone," Vinitha said as the clock ticked on the fate of the "honest, well-mannered girl" who once walked the corridors of Dhathri Girls' High School in Kollengode with her.
Poonkayam hasn't given up hope, though. Vinitha believes "a last-minute reprieve through govt intervention" could still happen.
Nimisha's husband Tomy, a daily-wage worker and occasional autorickshaw driver at Thodupuzha in Idukki, prays for a breakthrough in the campaign to reunite his wife with their 12-year-old daughter, Michele, and her mother, Prema Kumari.
"I can't bear the thought of my daughter losing her mother. All these years, I knocked on every door possible to save Nimisha, but nothing has worked so far. My earnest plea to the Indian govt is to step in immediately," Tomy said.

Michele lives in a school hostel in Kothamangalam. During Nimisha's weekly permitted phone calls or chats from prison, Tomy updates her on the initiatives to secure her release. He last spoke to his wife a week ago.
Nimisha's mother is currently in Yemen for negotiations with tribal leaders and the victim's family to secure her release, hoping that the community's high regard for women would make them accept offers of "blood money".
Nimisha was convicted of killing Talal Abdo Mahdi, with whom she had started a private clinic in Sana'a, in retaliation for allegedly torturing her and seizing her passport. A trial court pronounced the death sentence, that an appeals court upheld.
Nimisha had travelled to Yemen along with Tomy in 2012, just a year after their marriage. After Michele was born, father and daughter returned home in 2014 due to the civil war in Yemen, while Nimisha stayed back to run their clinic in Sana'a.
As the execution date draws near, the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council has stepped up efforts to start negotiation talks with Talal's kin. Activist Samuel Jerome is expected to reach Sana'a Thursday in a last-ditch attempt to seek pardon.

Bhopal: In a demolition operation that lasted nearly six hours, joint teams of district administration, police and municipal corporation on Thursday demolished the mansion of the "Machhli family" in Anantapura, Kokta Hathaikheda. The alleged illegal property, built over 15,000 square feet of govt land, was razed with the help of six earth mover machines amid heavy police deployment. Two members of the Machhli family including Shahwar Ahmed and Yasin Ahmed were arrested by the crime branch of Bhopal police for allegedly running an MD drugs supply racket in the city. They were also booked on charges of rape, molestation, extortion and assault. According to official sources, the mansion was built in 1990 and the three-storey mansion had more than 30 rooms, large halls, marble flooring on the terrace, a park, garage, playroom for children and luxury amenities spread over an acre of land. The market value of the razed property has been estimated at Rs 20 to 25 crore. However, after the deployment of additional women police personnel to control the protestors, the protest subsided and the illegal mansion was brought down by 5 pm. According to district administration officials, the Machhli family had illegally occupied nearly 70 acres of govt land near Anantpura and constructed three farmhouses, a warehouse, a factory, a madarsa and shops. In a previous demolition drive carried out on July 30, several of these structures were demolished. With Thursday's action, all seven illegal constructions have now been razed, freeing govt land valued at nearly Rs 100 crore. On July 31, the family's lawyer had managed to halt the demolition, citing Supreme Court guidelines requiring 15 days notice before demolishing residential structures. This time, however, despite fresh objections from the defence lawyer, officials went ahead with the operation, asserting that due notices had already been served. "The accused had encroached upon govt land and constructed large illegal buildings. Notices were duly served earlier. Thursday's action has ensured the recovery of govt property worth crores and restored it to official possession," said an officer of the district administration present at the site. Trial courts consistently failing to perform duties, says MP HC
Bhopal: A division bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court observed that "the trial courts in the state are consistently failing to perform their duties as a judge despite regular training at the National Judicial Academy". While acquitting a person convicted to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl under POCSO Act on the ground that the survivor may be an adult and not a minor, the bench of Justice Vivek Agarwal and Justice A K Singh said, "It is surprising to note that despite regular training in the Madhya Pradesh State Judicial Academy, trial courts are consistently failing to perform their duties as a judge. Though the DNA report was exhibited after closure of the prosecution evidence, but, trial court did not deem it proper to record supplementary statements of accused under Section 313 of CrPC and confront him to the circumstances which appeared against him in view of DNA test report despite referring to it in its judgment. Pvt bank employee under the scanner after fraud surfaces
Bhopal: A major financial fraud surfaced after a man discovered that a bank account was fraudulently opened in his name at a private bank and used for transactions amounting to nearly Rs 4 crore. The scam came to light in Oct 2024 when he received an income tax notice for unexplained financial dealings. MP Nagar police launched an investigation following the complaint and found that the fraud was allegedly orchestrated by a former bank employee, while the then branch manager was either involved or negligent in allowing the account to be opened without proper verification. The then branch manager was already transferred. According to MP Nagar police, the victim shared his identification documents with an insurance advisor in 2021 for a health insurance policy. Instead, the documents were misused to open a bank account in Feb 2021. The account remained active, allegedly serving as a mule account for cyber fraud networks.
