
'It becomes more about status signalling': Is £7m for a handbag absurd or justified?
"I like my money where I can see it. Hanging in my closet," says Carrie Bradshaw in the 2000s TV series Sex and the City, and it would appear that an increasing number of collectors do, too, with archival fashion auctions fetching record prices. Just last month, Sotheby's auction house in Paris sold a battered Hermès bag owned by its namesake, Jane Birkin, for £7m ($9.2m). And now Sotheby's in London has just opened a luxury pop-up salon, auctioning pieces by Hermès, Rolex and Cartier, running until 22 August.
But it wasn't always like this. Many auction houses have traditionally viewed their fashion divisions as tangential, with the brand-name recognition of some of the items drawing buyers in, and towards bigger-ticket items like paintings or sculptures.
Clothing belonging to celebrities, like Princess Diana or Marilyn Monroe, have historically fetched more than garments without a celebrity provenance, though nothing quite like the £7m Birkin bag. Monroe's infamous "Happy Birthday Mr President" dress, known as the world's most expensive dress, sold in 1999 for $1.3m, and again in 2016 for $4.8m to Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum. It currently resides there when it's not being taken for a spin by Kim Kardashian, who wore it to the 2022 Met Gala. Cora Harrington, fashion historian and author, says the dress's association with Kardashian will likely increase the value the next time it comes up for auction, despite any wear and tear caused by the star.
"I think that would have been true regardless of whether Kim wore it because it's Marilyn Monroe, but there are enough fans of Kim Kardashian that would likely result in a higher price," she tells the BBC. "Usually when an object is damaged it would devalue it, but it's the opposite in this case."
Conversations around auction items online and in the media, whether positive or negative, influence the sale price. For example, the furore surrounding Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's costumes in the upcoming Ryan Murphy TV series American Love Story will be likely to escalate the value of the ur-influencer's garments the next time they go up for auction.
The real deal
Modern-day influencers are also swaying how we think of luxury fashion, including the online communities dedicated to finding the best dupes, which Harrington says has added more value to the real thing – and created more work for luxury authenticators.
Then there's the popularity of resale sites like Depop, Vinted, eBay, Vestiaire Collective and TheRealReal lowering the barrier of entry to the luxury market.
"Dupes have driven more people to buy authentic," says Michael Mack, president of Max Pawn Luxury, which has one of the largest collections of Hermès bags for sale in the US. "It's not just Gucci, Hermès or Chanel; we sell Coach, Michael Kors and Kate Spade. Those are $300, $400, $500 bags and we do big business in that." And it's not just big-ticket items like the $180,000 and $240,000 Himalayan albino crocodile diamond-encrusted 25cm Birkins he's sold to celebrity clients, Mack adds.
Could resale's democratisation of luxury be in turn driving up these auction prices? Usha Haley, W Frank Barton Distinguished Chair in International Business at Wichita State University, Kansas, thinks so. "If investors begin flipping [buying then quickly re-selling for profit] items purely for short-term gain, it could destabilise the market and drive prices to be unsustainable," she tells the BBC. "The rising value of archival pieces may further detach fashion from everyday people, turning symbols of culture and identity into ultra-exclusive status objects out of reach for most, even as fashion becomes more democratised in digital spaces."

Meanwhile, social media is exposing new audiences to style icons from the past and historical garments featured in the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute exhibition, kicked off by the Met Gala, which this year brought in record profits.
This brings up the argument that items of such delicacy and historical relevance should be in a museum – one with stronger collection, conservation and loan policies than Ripley's. It's a valid one, to be sure, but just because an item is acquired by a museum doesn't mean it will necessarily be accessible to the public, as the majority of pieces in most institutions are not on display.
"There are services [that care] for private collections that are on the same level or even better than museums," Harrington says, pointing to companies such as Uovo. But shouldn't clothing be worn? Jane Birkin certainly had no qualms about using her Hermès bag, its battered state causing as many headlines as – and comparative to – its sale price. The experts I spoke to agreed.
"There's a collectable function, but the point of clothing is to wear it," Harrington says. "Wear it. Use it. Enjoy it," Mack concurs. "I think you see more people wearing these luxury items, and not so much of the collectability [aspect]."
They are also in agreement about the notion that fashion is wearable art. According to Harrington, the argument that fashion is not art – and therefore shouldn't be fetching high prices on par with a Picasso – is rooted in "larger structural conversations around misogyny and women's work and the fact that when women are interested in things they must be inherently less valuable".
Viewing fashion and art as commodities concerns Haley. "The escalating prices become less about fashion as creative or social expression and more about status signalling and speculative investment," she says. "Auctions then can sideline the deeper cultural conversations that fashion artefacts could inspire – about sustainability, labour, craftsmanship, or even the identity of the women who made them famous."
Arguably, decades of experience on the part of designers, centuries of establishment for houses like Hermès, which launched in 1837, and the many hours of craftsmanship that go into these pieces is what people are paying for. The Jean Paul Gaultier denim and ostrich feather gown from the 1999 spring couture collection – that sold for €71,500 (£61,900) last year – springs to mind. In the end, says Harrington, "the very nature of an auction is the thing is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If a dress sells for $300,000, then the dress is worth $300,000."

'Former England cricketers Alex Hartley and Isa Guha and will lead the presenting team, as they know the sport inside out. Rick Edwards from Radio Five Live will be used in the Chris Hughes role.' World Cup winners Isa Guha and Alex Hartley will anchor the coverage on TV, with Chris' role now being filled by BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast star Rick Edwards. Daily Mail has contacted reps for Chris, while the BBC declined to comment. It comes after the BBC told Chris in 2023 that his comment towards female cricketer Maitlan Brown during the BBC's coverage of The Hundred was 'not appropriate'. Chris was interviewing Southern Brave's Australian star during her side's innings against the Trent Rockets, in which he provided plenty of positivity about the women's game. However, he became sidetracked after Brown mentioned a recent team bonding session among the Brave stars. The model, 60, plays 'The Deceased' in the entertaining trailer, which sees a stately home being plundered of expensive goods. Elizabeth, dressed in a plunging gold sequin dress, says: 'If haven't noticed, darlings, I'm dead, which means my entire estate is up for grabs.' Playing the part of a glamorous benefactor in the show, Elizabeth puts 13 contestants through their paces as they make their bid for her inheritance. However, if they want to get a large share of it, they will need to be cunning to win at her mischievous game. The game is overseen by Robert Rinder, 47, who is The Deceased's Executor and trusted legal counsel. The Deceased understands that people will go to great lengths to win her inheritance, but in her mind, only the most cunning among the contestants deserve to have it. That is why Hurley's character devised 'a series of devilishly difficult assignments' to ensure this happens. These are reported to put the players' diligence, decency and ruthlessness to the test. The game also has a twist - only one player can collect the inheritance from each request. This means that they will have to convince their fellow competitors that they deserve the windfall. Channel 4 said: 'The Inheritance is a camp, cut-throat game of wit, willpower, persuasion and betrayal. 'It's not about who deserves the money, but who can outplay, out-charm and out-scheme the rest to claim it. ' The show has already been likened to the smash hit, The Traitors, which has a similar premise. The BBC show sees players move into Ardoss Castle in the Scottish Highlands where an informed minority (known as the Traitors) must eliminate an uninformed majority (known as the Faithfuls). Elizabeth said: 'It's a thrill to be part of this clever game, playing The Deceased; it all takes place on her huge estate in the English countryside and she dresses to the nines in every scene.' Rob added: 'This is a high-stakes strategy game served with a side of scheming and sabotage. 'As The Executor I enforce the rules, keep the chaos in check - more or less - and make sure our players are deserving of every glittering penny left by our dearly departed deceased.'

What makes a horse fit to carry a monarch? Standing at 18 'hands' (6ft, or just shy of two meters) tall, striking an elegant and almost ghostly figure with his smooth silver coat, there was surely never a more obvious choice than Tyrone. The 'gentle and dependable giant' – in the official estimation of the Royal family – was trusted to work at almost every royal occasion for more than a decade, from the Diamond Jubilee to King Charles's coronation. Now, at the ripe old age of 19 (about 58 in human years) the Irish draught horse is being ushered out to pasture. It marks a fitting conclusion for the Windsor grey, whose first outing as a state ceremonial carriage horse came in 2012 when he brought Queen Elizabeth II to the state opening of Parliament that autumn. He was particularly adored by the late monarch, who was known to go out of her way to bring him carrots at the Royal Mews stables on Buckingham Palace Road. Recognition, it seems, for his steadfastness. After all, Tyrone was trusted to lead the Queen's carriage for so many important moments of her reign: including the Diamond Jubilee a mere four weeks after his service started, at several state openings of Parliament and during her visit to Royal Ascot in 2019. The late monarch herself was a dedicated equestrian who championed the role of horses in royal ceremony, particularly of the Windsor greys, who with their distinctive silver coats have been alongside the Royal family since the time of Queen Victoria. Perhaps it was Tyrone's famously tender temperament that endeared him to Elizabeth II. Those who looked after him have spoken in recent days of his 'stoic' and 'kind-natured' character. 'Everyone loves Tyrone. He's totally dependable, very hard-working and really deserves his retirement.' Others at the Mews recalled a giant without a single 'bad bone in his body'. He was reported to have been something of a mentor to younger horses during his time at the stables, helping them through the training process as they readied to carry carriages themselves. Tyrone's many public outings showed exactly how it was done, holding his nerve alongside the armed police and flashing motorbikes that are a necessary presence at royal outings. Whether it was Harry and Meghan on their wedding day, the King and Queen at their coronation or during French president Emmanuel Macron's state visit last month, there he was, working in a pair with another grey, or with seven others who had all been bred and reared for the task of carrying the Royals. That included his sister, Meg, who he was paired with to lead the Gold State Coach as 'wheelers', the calmest horses positioned closest to the carriage, on many occasions. Last June, Tyrone was trusted to help carry the coach as the Princess of Wales made her return to public life after announcing she was battling cancer – dutifully escorting Catherine, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis as they made their way from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade and back again as part of annual Trooping the Colour celebrations. The late Queen 'loved the fact there was a family connection', Col Browne said. Tyrone has an especially venerable ancestry. His father Carrickrock Storm (known affectionately to the Royals only as Storm), born in 2002, stood out from the other foals on the paddock in Ardstraw, County Tyrone. 'He had a great temperament,' Harry Wilson, a farmer who helped to rear him, told the BBC in 2015. 'The first time you put the head cover on he was quiet as a lamb.' After moving to London, Storm quickly earned the Queen's trust. In 2012, he modelled for a statue to mark the Diamond Jubilee alongside another grey, called Daniel, that now stands on a roundabout near Windsor Castle. Both Tyrone and Meg clearly inherited something of their father's spirit. The latter, now 20, was first to leave the family paddock in Ireland (where many royal carriage horses are bred) for the Royal Mews in 2008. Tyrone left two years later, aged four. At 11am on Monday, the siblings and their father, now 26, were reunited at the Horse Trust in Buckinghamshire, a sanctuary for retired working horses. Some 75 per cent of the creatures there have served in the Army, with the police, or with the Household Cavalry. According to those who witnessed his arrival, Tyrone immediately bounded over to Meg and Storm. The trio touched noses as they greeted one another. Given that Irish draught horses regularly live to see 30, it is hoped that Tyrone has many happy and healthy years ahead. 'After all his years of public service, bringing joy and pride to the country, it's time for us to serve him and give him the best possible life here, where our horses are treated like royalty,' said Jeanette Allen, chief executive of The Horse Trust, the charity which counts Princess Anne as its patron and to which the late Queen was a donor. Tyrone left London in a covered red horse box, a typically understated exit for a mount who never tried to steal the limelight. But he will always be special, as the gentle, handsome and above all loyal creature who calmed the nerves of the Royals in their most strained hours.
