FM Sitharaman applauds Meghalaya's efforts in inclusive development, women's empowerment
Shillong (Meghalaya) [India], July 12 (ANI): Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday visited Laitkynsew Village, East Khasi Hills district and interacted with Women SHGs and Lakhpati Didis, and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). During her visit, she expressed her deep appreciation for the Government of Meghalaya's dedicated efforts in implementing Central and State schemes across the state. She emphasised the importance of inclusive development and grassroots empowerment to achieve the vision of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.' Meghalaya Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Ampareen Lyngdoh, was also present during the visit. Thanking the State Government for its warm hospitality, the Minister said she was leaving with 'strong memories of the remarkable efforts underway to take the schemes of both the Government of India and the Government of Meghalaya to every corner of this beautiful state.' Reflecting on her visit to the aspirational district of Ri-Bhoi and her engagements in Shillong, she highlighted how Meghalaya's development journey reflects the spirit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047. 'If we truly believe in Sabka Vikas, development must reach everyone - man and woman, village and city, young and elderly, rich and poor alike,' the Minister said, adding that inclusive growth must empower every citizen to pursue their aspirations and secure a dignified livelihood. Union Finance Minister Sitharaman praised the remarkable progress made in the health sector, particularly noting the decline in the Maternal Mortality Rate in Meghalaya as a strong indicator of on-ground transformation. She emphasised the role of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in bringing about this change. Since 2014, a concerted push has been made to support women's collectives by improving access to credit, training, branding support, and market linkages. The Finance Minister underscored the significance of the Lakhpati Didi initiative, which aims to ensure that at least five women in every village earn a sustainable income of Rs 1 lakh annually. 'Motivation grows when one of your own achieves success. The Prime Minister's Lakhpati Didi initiative has inspired women across the country to dream bigger,' she said. The Finance Minister reiterated the Centre's commitment to support Meghalaya in its ambition to build a $30 billion economy by 2030, a goal that aligns with India's broader developmental roadmap. 'To reach this target, every village must contribute. If Meghalaya achieves this vision, it will serve as a model and catalyst for the national goal of becoming a developed country by 2047,' the Finance Minister noted. She also highlighted the Centre's consistent focus on the Northeast, pointing out that Union Ministers have been visiting the region at least once a month, ensuring that policy support and monitoring continue at the highest level. The Finance Minister concluded with a strong reaffirmation of partnership between the Centre and the State, with Sitharaman stating, 'With the strong support of Prime Minister Modi, we are determined to work closely with the Government of Meghalaya to fulfil these aspirations.' During the interaction with the Union Minister, a powerful example of grassroots empowerment came from Lahun Mary Blah of Ieng Rasong SHG, who shared how she began with a Rs 4,000 loan to sell clothes and gradually expanded her business. Over time, she availed further credit, including a Rs 10000 Cash Credit loan to start a clothing shop and a Rs 1 lakh Community Investment Fund (CIF) loan from the CLF in 2025, which enabled her to open a tea stall and a flower boutique. Mary noted that her ventures not only boosted her income but also created local employment opportunities. Her annual income has grown from Rs 20000 to Rs 3.4 lakh, with personal savings of over Rs 4,080 in her SHG. More than financial gain, she said the journey had built her confidence, helping her grow from homemaker to businesswoman and changemaker. She expressed gratitude to the MSRLS and others who supported her journey and hoped her story would inspire more women to believe in themselves and take the first step toward success. (ANI)

Bone marrow transplant to resume at SCB under mentor, govt tells HC
Cuttack: The state govt informed the Orissa high court on Friday that bone marrow transplant (BMT) services at SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH), Cuttack — the state's only facility offering free BMT — will resume shortly under the guidance of an honorary mentor. A division bench of Justices S K Sahoo and V Narasingh, hearing a petition seeking urgent steps to ensure proper functioning of SCBMCH's haematology department noted that the transplant service had been halted following the retirement of the department's professor. The petition cited a media report. Health secretary Aswathy S, appearing in the virtual mode, informed the court that while an associate professor and two assistant professors are currently posted and technically qualified, they had only assisted the now-retired professor and lacked confidence to independently carry out transplants. To bridge this gap, Dr. Prabodh Kumar Das, a retired haematology specialist from AIIMS, has agreed to act as an honorary mentor. He is expected to oversee transplant procedures at SCBMCH and provide hands-on supervision to the existing faculty. Instructions for co-ordinating with Dr. Das have already been issued to the superintendent of SCBMCH, the health secretary told the bench. The court was further informed that the govt is drafting standard operating procedures (SOPs) to make mentoring by professors mandatory, ensuring continuity of specialised services after retirements or transfers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo A committee has been constituted to finalise these guidelines. Aswathy also said the health department has proposed institutional tie-ups with top transplant centres across the country to support transplant operations and faculty training in Odisha. The proposal is currently awaiting govt approval. The bench directed the SCBMCH superintendent and the health secretary to file affidavits detailing the steps being taken for the smooth functioning of the haematology department. The matter has been listed for next hearing on Aug 7. The special BMT unit was established in SCBMCH in Feb 2014. The entire procedure from investigations, treatment to recovery is free and all costs are borne by the govt. Generally, the procedure costs Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. Starting in April 2014 with autologous transplants, the unit has so far successfully conducted 180 transplants with a high survival rate. The last transplant was performed at the unit in Feb 2025.

WHO recognises India's initiative in integrating AI with traditional medicine
New Delhi, July 12 (UNI) India's efforts in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with traditional medicine systems have been recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its newly released technical brief titled 'Mapping the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Traditional Medicine.' The document marks the first global roadmap on AI integration in traditional medicine and prominently features several Indian-led initiatives such as Ayush Grid and Ayurgenomics. It also acknowledged India as the first country to launch a Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), reflecting its long-standing commitment to preserving and digitising traditional medicinal knowledge. The release of the technical brief follows a proposal made by India at the WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine, leading to the formulation of this document. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ayush and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, welcomed the recognition, noting that it reflects the deep commitment of Indian scientists and institutions. 'This underscores our alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to leverage technologies like AI to enhance the global relevance of Traditional Medicine,' he said. Jadhav cited several flagship platforms—SAHI portal, NAMASTE portal, and the Ayush Research Portal—as examples of how India is using digital technology to both preserve and globalise its traditional medicine systems. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, stated that the WHO brief documents a slew of key AI-powered innovations from India, including Prakriti-based machine learning models for predictive diagnostics, AI applications for analysing pulse, tongue, and constitution types using neural networks among others. Further, the development of artificial chemical sensors to assess traditional parameters such as Rasa (taste), Guna (quality), and Virya (potency) was highlighted as a promising technological advancement in the standardisation of traditional formulations. The WHO brief also praised India's broader push toward digital health literacy among Ayush practitioners and efforts to build interoperable health systems that integrate traditional and allopathic medicine. The rise of online consultations and AI-powered diagnostic tools is considered an imperative part of a holistic push to modernise and expand access to traditional healthcare services. UNI AJ AAB GNK
