Several key financial changes are happening this month that could impact your wallet. The main changes include the introduction of tax return penalties, NatWest's takeover of Sainsburys bank, and inflation updates. Premium bond winners have already been announced and HMRC has begun charging people a daily rate for submitting tax returns late.
Ofgem is also set to announce the new energy Price Cap figures for the next three months - meaning the cost of energy bills might finally be able to come down.

Here are the main money dates to be aware of this May:

May 1 - NatWest takes over Sainsbury's Bank
If you have a personal loan, savings account or credit card with Sainsbury's Bank, your account will now be moved to NatWest.
This change comes after NatWest's £2.5billion deal to buy Sainsbury's Bank. For money-saving tips, sign up to our Money newsletter here
Sainsbury's will continue to offer insurance and travel money services, but has already stopped offering new credit cards, loans and savings account applications.

May 1 - £10 daily tax return fines start
Anyone who missed the self-assessment tax return deadline back on January 31 will start racking up daily fines from this month.
HMRC will now fine £10 every day until the assessment is completed and will carry on to a maximum of £900.
If you still haven't filed the form after six months, you could face an extra penalty of £300, or 5% of your unpaid tax.

May 21 - New inflation figures to be revealed
The latest inflation update from the Office for National Statistics is due on May 21.
In the last update, the figure had dropped to 2.6% after its peak of 11.1% in October 2022, but experts have warned it could increase again due to recent rising energy bills.
May 29 - Nationwide's £100 bonus' could be confirmed
Nationwide is expected to confirm whether it will pay out another round of £100 'Fairer Share,' bonuses to its members when it releases its annual results on May 29.

Last year, around 3.85 million customers each received a £100 bonus after Nationwide reported a £2 billion profit.
May 31- P60 deadline
Employers will have until May 31 to provide workers with their P60s.
A P60 is a document that shows how much you earned and how much tax you've been paid in the last financial year, crucial if you are applying for a mortgage, loan or certain benefits.

This is how much the average UK house price fell by in May

UK house prices have fallen by around £1,150 in May, despite property values increasing by more than £7,000 in 2024. Halifax found that May's month-on-month price fall followed a 0.3% increase in April, following a slower growth in house prices in the past two months. Halifax's latest report contrasts with the findings from Nationwide Building Society's latest house price index, released on Monday this week. Nationwide said that property values had increased by 0.5% month-on-month in May, following a 0.6% fall in April. Amanda Bryden, head of mortgages at Halifax, said: 'Over the past 12 months, prices have grown by 2.5%, adding just over £7,000 to the value of a typical home, which now stands at £296,648. 'These small monthly movements point to a housing market that has remained largely stable, with average prices down by just 0.2% since the start of the year.' Ms Bryden added that the affordability of homes remains a challenge, as house prices are still high compared to incomes. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'Despite ongoing pressure on household finances and a still uncertain economic backdrop, the housing market has shown resilience – a story we expect to continue in the months ahead,' she said. Iain McKenzie, chief executive of the Guild of Property Professionals, said: 'The key fundamentals supporting home buyers remain strong – low unemployment, rising real earnings, and the continued anticipation of easing borrowing costs in the medium-term.' The head of sales at estate agent Chestersons, Matt Thompson, pointed out that some home buyers paused their search in April, but quickly resumed in May. More Trending 'Buyer motivation was then boosted further by the Bank of England's decision to cut interest rates to 4.25%. We expect a busier-than-usual summer market,' he said. Halifax pointed out that house price growth across Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland has been outpacing regions in England. In London, house prices have increased by just 1.2% year-on-year, the report said. NatWest fixes issues which left thousands of customers locked out of accounts

NatWest's mobile app is back up and running after service issues left its customers unable to log in for several hours on Friday. The bank said it had fixed the problems and apologised to users who were unable to view or make payments. A spokeswoman for the bank said: 'NatWest customers experienced difficulty accessing our mobile app today. 'We have resolved the issues causing this and customers are now able to log in and make payments as normal. 'We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.' More than 3,000 outages were reported through the services monitoring site Downdetector at about 10am on Friday. And many more could have been affected by the outage across the approximately ten million customers who use the mobile app to access their bank accounts every day. Several users said they could not pay bills, send wages or transfer funds between accounts on Friday morning. NatWest reassured customers the issue stemmed from an update it made to the app on Thursday, after some customers raised concerns over recent major cyber hacks affecting Marks & Spencer and the Co-op. Several users said they could not pay bills, send wages, or transfer funds between accounts on Friday morning. The technical issues come off the back of major cyber hacks which have affected Marks & Spencer and the Co-op, with customers concerned that NatWest could be the next company targeted. However, Natwest reassured customers that the issue was caused by an update it made to the app on Thursday. High street banks have been in the firing line over a string of outages that have affected customers, particularly around the end of the month when it is typically pay day for many households. Data gathered by the Treasury Committee in March found there had been more than 33 days worth of unplanned tech and system outages in the last two years for nine of the UK's biggest banks and building societies. NatWest told the committee it had 13 'material' incidents between 2023 and 2025, paying nearly £350,000 in compensation for customers who complained. NatWest has said the issues stemmed from an update they made to the app. / Credit: NatWest Barclays said it could pay up to £12.5 million in compensation for millions of customers affected over the period. Common reasons given for the incidents include problems with third-party suppliers, disruption caused when systems were changed, and internal software malfunctions. Jenny Ross, money editor for consumer champion Which?, said: 'Banks are encouraging more and more of us to rely on apps to do our essential banking, so when these go down it can be devastating. 'In the worst cases there's a risk that impacted NatWest customers may miss important bill payments, find themselves unable to pay for essential services or risk going overdrawn – issues which could come with knock-on effects like late payment or overdraft penalties, or affect their ability to get credit or borrow money. 'NatWest must ensure customers are kept updated and are swiftly compensated where appropriate. 'Anyone affected should keep evidence of impacted payments in case they need to make a claim, and if you think you'll be unable to pay a bill, contact the company involved as soon as possible to ensure they're aware and waive any late payment fees.'
