India's commerce ministry announced restrictions on some imports from Bangladesh via its land borders, prompting fears for the South Asian country's export-reliant economy.
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated after former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina – a long-term New Delhi ally – was ousted last year, and fled to India where she is currently living in self-imposed exile.
New Delhi announced late Saturday that ready-made garments from Bangladesh cannot be imported through land borders, while some other goods – including cotton, processed foods and wooden funiture – have been barred from at least six entry points in northeast India.
The announcement came a month after Bangladesh banned yarn imports from New Delhi through the same land routes.
The latest move is a 'big threat', Bangladeshi conglomerate Pran-RFL Group, which exports around $60 million of goods annually to India, told AFP.
'India is the largest market for Pran-RFL Group's processed foods, plastic products, furniture, and PVC-finished goods,' director Kamruzzaman Kamal said.
'With the latest restrictions, almost every category of our products are getting affected. This is a big threat for the company and the country as well,' Kamal said, urging a bilateral solution with India.
The textile industry would be temporarily affected by the move, said Rakibul Alam Chowdhury of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association president Mohammad Hatem also denounced the tit-for-tat move by New Delhi, adding that border trade would 'face a blow'.
However, he believed that garment exporters 'will be able to cover up the impact'.
The government in Dhaka told AFP it had not been officially informed of the latest restrictions.
'We haven't received any official copy of notification. Once we get the documents and then we can come up with our decision after going through it,' said Ministry of Commerce advisor Sheikh Bashir Uddin.
Bangladesh imported around $9 billion worth of goods from India in the last 10 months of the 2024 financial year, while exports to India stood at $1.51 billion, according to Bangladesh Bank and Export Promotion Bureau data.
At the start of April, India cancelled a 2020 transshipment deal that allowed Bangladesh to export cargo to third countries via Indian land borders.

First ever Birkin bag heads to auction at Sotheby's

The value of the prototype has not been disclosed. Photo: AFP The first-ever Birkin bag that was designed by French luxury brand Hermes for actress Jane Birkin is set to be sold at auction in Paris, with the piece of modern fashion history likely to spark a bidding frenzy. The Birkin has become a modern design icon that is so exclusive that Hermes only offers it to loyal clients, with prices starting at around $10,000. Auction house Sotheby's, which is handling the sale of the Birkin prototype in Paris on July 10, declined to specify a reserve price publicly and its value is hard to forecast. "The Original Birkin holds the potential to redefine records," Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's global handbag and fashion head, said in a statement. The previous record sale price for a handbag at auction was set by a highly customised Birkin in Hong Kong in 2017. The diamond-encrusted crocodile-skin Birkin 30 with white gold details fetched $510,000 at Christie's. The seller of the original Birkin is well-known Paris-based handbag collector and dealer Catherine Benier whose appointment-only boutique in the high-end 6th district of the capital has a cult following. Benier told The New York Times that the bag was the "jewel in my collection". It has changed hands twice since being put up for sale by Birkin at an auction in 1994 where the proceeds went to an AIDS charity, Sotheby's said. The birth of the Birkin bag has become a modern fashion legend. During a Paris-London flight, the singer and actress — who died in 2023 — complained to a fellow traveller about not being able to find a bag suited to her needs as a young mother. That fellow passenger happened to be Jean-Louis Dumas, then head of Hermes. The result of their conversation was a spacious tote with room for baby bottles, created in 1984 and named the Birkin. It is engraved with the initials JB and has several unique features, Sotheby's said, including closed metal rings, a non-detachable shoulder strap and a built-in nail clipper. Its condition "reflects the many years of use by the actress and singer," Sotheby's said. The prototype Birkin will be exhibited at Sotheby's in New York from June 6 to 12 before being put on show in the French capital before the sale. In addition to the Birkin bag, the Sotheby's "Fashion Icons" sale will feature runway pieces from designers including Christian Dior, John Galliano, Thierry Mugler and Alexander McQueen. Bidding will open online on June 26 and close on July 10.

Indian rupee ends higher as rate-cut boost for equities blunts dollar strength

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee strengthened modestly on Friday as the Reserve Bank of India's steepest rate cut in five years boosted local equities, helping the South Asian currency eke out a gain even as the dollar firmed against major peers. The rupee closed at 85.6250 against the U.S. dollar, up from its close at 85.79 in the previous session. The rupee declined 0.2% on the week. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cut its key repo rate by 50 basis points on Friday and slashed the cash reserve ratio (CRR) for banks as low inflation gave policymakers room to focus on supporting growth. India's benchmark equity indexes, the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50, about 1% each on Friday, posting their best one-day gain in two weeks as the rate cut fuelled domestic growth expectations. India's benchmark 10-year bond whipsawed between gains and losses as traders digested the central bank's policy moves, including a shift in stance from 'accommodative' to 'neutral.' Indian rupee falters as bullish exits, dollar strength collide The yield on the benchmark paper was last quoted a tad higher at 6.2237%. Meanwhile, dollar-rupee forward premiums fell in reaction to the rate cut with the 1-year implied yield dropping 10 basis points to 1.81%. The Indian central bank's 'larger-than-expected 50 bps rate cut and 100 bps cut in the cash reserve ratio should support INR,' DBS said in a Friday note. 'We will consider lowering USD/INR's forecast if the US Federal Reserve pivots towards a rate cut later this year and sets the stage for more USD weakness,' the noted added. On the day, the dollar index was up 0.3% at 98.9 in the run-up to release of closely watched U.S. non-farm payrolls data which will offer cues on how the world's largest economy is faring in the face of trade policy spurred uncertainty.

Russian Urals oil to India sells at narrowest discounts since 2022, traders say

MOSCOW/NEW DELHI: Discounts for Russian flagship Urals crude oil for delivery to Indian ports in July hit their narrowest levels since 2022 as spot supplies have tightened, four traders involved in the market said on Friday. Narrowing discounts and tight spot supplies are nudging Indian refiners to scout for alternatives through buying tenders. Spot discounts for Urals crude narrowed to $2.25 per barrel on average for cargoes arriving in India in July, from $2.70 to $3.10 per barrel to dated Brent on delivery ex-ship (DES) basis in the previous month, the sources said. That is the narrowest discount for Urals oil cargoes sold to India since the Ukraine war broke out in 2022. India became the largest buyer of Russian seaborne crude after Moscow diverted its energy supply away from the European Union which imposed a ban. India's GAIL sells LNG cargo as early monsoons cause weak power demand, say sources Some Indian refiners which do not have long-term supply agreements with Russian oil companies are not getting enough Urals oil in July, the sources said. India's largest private refiner, Reliance Industries, locked in a term supply contract with Russian oil giant Rosneft last year, which reduced the availability of Urals in the spot market, they said. Russian oil traders cited higher demand for the grade from refiners in Turkey, which has recently increased buying, boosting competition with Indian refiners over the supply. Turkey's largest oil refiner, Tupras, resumed buying Urals in April after stopping earlier this year, because of tougher U.S. sanctions on Moscow. Two of the traders also said improving refining margins globally also helped boost Russian oil demand as refiners are eager to increase crude runs. India remains the biggest buyer of Russian Urals oil by sea, with imports hitting a 10-month high in May.
