A Guide to Milwaukee's Best Restaurants And Bars

Led by Kyle Knall and rooted in sustainability and local ingredients, Birch is one of Milwaukee's best restaurants.
Though my job takes me to many far-flung and enviable destinations, I'm open to travel tips. But one sent by a close girlfriend via text last year stumped me: 'Have you ever been to Milwaukee? It's cute, and everyone's so nice. We should do a girls' trip here!'
My love of domestic travel rekindled during the pandemic, but I had never given Wisconsin's biggest city much thought. I knew the television show 'Laverne & Shirley' took place there; because of that I also knew there was beer—lots of beer.
When in Milwaukee, a Wisconsin Old Fashioned at Bryant's Cocktail Lounge is a must.
But during a visit a couple of months ago, I found there's far more to Milwaukee than these clichés. I was mesmerized by the city's architecture, from Pabst Brewery Complex's cream city bricks to the stunning Milwaukee Art Museum designed jointly by Santiago Calatrava, Eero Saarinen, and David Kahler. Its scenic perch along Lake Michigan—which offers loads of of recreational opportunities, like the world's largest music festival Summerfest—further added to the city's unexpected appeal.
What opened my eyes the most, however, was the food scene. I already knew about Milwaukee staples like cheese curds and frozen custard; what I wasn't expecting to find was such an appealing mix of old and new, and locals who are up for eating everything.

That's what Kyle Knall, a 2025 James Beard Award semifinalist and the chef-owner of Birch, discovered after relocated his family from New York City to Milwaukee in 2020: 'I love the community of Milwaukee, and how people here embrace food and eating out in such an amazing way.'

One Birch's most popular (and pretty) dishes is the Contramar-inspired fish.
Consider Birch, the New American restaurant former New York chef Kyle Knall (Gramercy Tavern, Electric Lemon) and his wife Megan opened in 2021, the quintessential neighborhood spot. It's as lovely for a chill bar hang of burgers and wine as it for a celebratory tasting menu at the counter. The entire staff, from the general manager Jeff Cleveland who pulls double-duty as the sommelier, to the dishwasher—whom I caught flashing a soft smile during a busy service—seems happy and proud to be on Birch's team.
As for the food? It's ingredient-driven, quietly confident, and shaped by Knall's favorite restaurants—his Contramar-Inspired Fish gets its signature red and green from Jimmy Nardello and poblano peppers—and Wisconsin's rich natural bounty. 'The local agriculture, especially the fresh produce is incredible,' he says. 'We have to wait longer for the seasons to change, but what they bring is truly unmatched.'
Speaking of seasons: the Knalls are opening Cassis, their highly anticipated French bistro, in Historic Third Ward this summer.
Bryant's Cocktail Lounge
Bryant's Cocktail Lounge isn't just a bar; it's a Milwaukee institution. Opened in 1938 in a historic residence that once was a Miller Brewing tied house (a bar obligated to buy alcohol from a specific brewery), Bryant's Cocktail Lounge has maintained its cool for over 85 years. It's dimly lit. There's plenty of seats to sink into. A mix of jazz, soul, and classical music plays from the old-school Mcintosh sound system. Drinkwise, you can choose from 600 (not a typo) or so cocktails. There are no menus; instead, chat with the bartender about your preferences. If you're a first-timer, try a signature Pink Squirrel (ice cream, crème de cacao, crème de noyaux) or Wisconsin Old Fashioned.
Allie Boy's Bagelry & Luncheonette
If you're short on time, seeking a quality bite that won't break the bank, or need to shake off last night's excess, Allie Boy's Bagelry & Luncheonette by the husband-and-wife-duo of Ben Nerenhausen and Staci Lopez has you covered. The bagel dough is made with local water and flour, then hand-rolled, boiled, and baked to glossy, chewy perfection. While you'll find traditional bagel flavors and schmears here, don't pass up on the original sandwiches, like the furikake-dusted egg salad and pizza bagel tartine.
Ca'Lucchenzo
Tucked away in Wauwatosa, a charming suburb just west of Milwaukee, is Ca'Lucchenzo by Zak and Sarah Baker. Since 2019, it's established itself as the local go-to for seasonal Italian cuisine—the handmade pastas are exceptional—and warm, familial service. As the menu changes frequently, order whatever sounds good. 'Chances are it won't be on the menu the next time you come over for dinner,' says Sarah. What does stay the same is the rolling cart of amaros, presented after your meal for a memorable finish.
Milwaukee's Three Brothers specializes in homey Serbian food.
Three Brothers Restaurant was established in 1956 by Serbian immigrant Milun Radicevic to keep his family together under one roof following World War I. To this day, the kitchen is run by the Radicevic family, with many recipes handed down from Milun's mother. Your best bet? Come hungry, and come with friends. The food is unfussy, hearty, and loaded with meat and cheese; crowd favorites include the Serbian salad, goulash, and burek (phyllo dough typically stuffed with ground beef).
Milwaukee Public Market
Since opening in the historic Third Ward in 2005, Milwaukee Public Market has gained national recognition by being more than a striking space with 19 diverse and independently-owned food vendors such as West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe, St. Paul Fish Company, and Aladdin. It champions the local community by supporting charitable causes like Milwaukee Public Schools' School-to-Work Transition Program. It's also an event space, where you can book a wedding or a cooking class at Madame Kuony's Kitchen.

While 'Abbott Elementary' creator and star Quinta Brunson is a noted scholar of classic sitcoms, she does not envy the episode orders of yore. 'Some of my favorite shows had 30 to 40 episode seasons, which is insane,' said the Emmy winner, noting her respect for those older series' hustle. 'But I cannot tell you how hard it is to not make absolute garbage. You start going [into Episode] 22 like 'Honestly, I could phone it in.' We've seen other shows do it. We don't want to do that. We want to continue to make good television. We want every episode to be a surprise. We want you to not [say] 'I'm going to go back to the tired episode of the tired show.' We would like to keep it compelling.' In an event giving the audience a peek inside the 'Abbott Elementary' writers room, as part of IndieWire's Pass the Remote FYC series, produced in partnership with Disney, Brunson and executive producers Patrick Schumacker, Justin Halpern, and Brian Rubenstein, plus co-executive producer Brittani Nichols joined IndieWire's Awards Editor Marcus Jones for a discussion about the show was able to navigate several changes with Season 4, including more episodes, and a big change to the group dynamics. 'From the very first time we talked about [the show] with Quinta, she was like, 'I don't want this to be the Janine and Gregory show. I want it to be an ensemble.' And let me tell you the notes that we would get sometimes from the executives early on was like, 'Can we get more Janine and Gregory?'' He added, 'They wanted it so bad, and we had to push back and be like, 'The show is going to be stronger in the long run.'' Despite the pair finally being a couple in Season 4, the show still managed to spotlight its other characters like Principal Ava (Janelle James) throughout its 22 episodes, an effort that is core to the show's DNA. 'You go back to the Bible of the show, of why you created it. And as we start Season 5, I in my head go, 'What is this show about? It's about teachers in Philadelphia trying to make the best out of what they have.' And so we couldn't let that change to 'This show is about Janine and Gregory', or 'This show is about Ava,' or 'This show is about Barbara.' When you have an ensemble, it has to continue to focus on each character,' said Brunson. The executive producers also highlight that one of the benefits of having a 22-episode season is how that inclusive ethos extends behind the scenes as well. 'It's really important to us to be able to give people their first opportunities, people who are generally looked over. And because we have 22 episodes, we have four assistants who are now on staff of the show, a writer's PA that gets to write an episode of the show, we have first AD's getting to direct,' said Halpern. 'Because we do 22 episodes, and a lot of other shows don't, we are able to actually bring people along and start a bunch of careers.' For instance, Season 4 saw both Schumacker and Nichols make their directorial debuts on the episodes 'The Deli' and 'Music Class,' respectively. While Schumacker shared that directing had been his initial passion, delayed by his writing duties alongside Halpern, Nichols revealed that she had never even thought about directing until she worked alongside 'Abbott Elementary' director and executive producer Randall Einhorn. 'I just was very talkative, and had a lot of opinions, and things that I wanted to get. And he just was like, 'Do you want to direct?' And I just said 'Yes' in the moment, and then we sort of built off of that,' she said. 'Truly, it starts with that question, of just someone being willing to see you, and put attention on you, and ask you the thing that a lot of people in this industry won't ask you. And that is how it came to be, truly, was just this old white guy being like, 'What's going on with you over here?'' As for how 'Abbott Elementary' continues to foster an environment where everyone is seen and heard, despite a rigorous work schedule, Rubenstein said, 'It starts from the top. These are the most generous people I've ever worked with … It sounds ridiculous, but it's true, everyone is so nice and amazing on this show, and it's just been the best experience of my career, and I love coming to work.' Southern-Leaning American Bistro Cannonball Dives Into South Pasadena

One of northeast Los Angeles's most charming neighborhoods, South Pasadena, welcomed Cannonball on May 2, a new restaurant from Hippo chef Matt Molina and operating partner Joe Capella. The sprawling multi-floor space, previously occupied by Piccolo, has original brick walls, an extensive vintage wine list, cocktails, and farmers-market-derived seasonal produce. It's potentially the most exciting new restaurant to open in the area in a few years (its most recent was 2023's debut of Katsu Jin on Fair Oaks). With Molina and Capella steering the ship, South Pasadena has a grown-up restaurant for drinks and classic American dishes, coupled with reasonable prices. Molina, who won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Pacific of 2012 for his work at Osteria Mozza, has had a strong run with Capella at Arts District's Everson Royce Bar (opened in 2015), which is also co-founded and co-owned by Randy Clement and April Langford (Good Neighbor Bar, Silver Lake Wine). The foursome opened Hippo in Highland Park and Triple Beam alongside Nancy Silverton in 2018, cementing their place in northeast LA's dining scene. Molina's relationships with farmers at the South Pasadena Farmers Market, a main source for Hippo's produce, led him and Capella to check out the former Piccolo. The former Venice-based Italian restaurant had expanded to Mission Street in 2022 but closed just a year later in spring 2023 (it still operates in Santa Monica). Cannonball is Capella and Molina's first collaboration, opened without involvement from Clement, Langford, and Silverton. 'Hippo was in a good spot and we wanted to do something in this neighborhood [South Pasadena,' says Molina. 'I grew up in SGV and first heard about it when our friend Steven Arroyo opened something here. He was always ahead of the game. It's so charming here, but a lot of people in Northeast LA don't know about it, or the farmers market.' After a career spent in Hollywood and Mid-City at Osteria Mozza and Campanile, Molina has become acclimated to this part of town. Molina sees a similarity to New York City restaurateurs [like Gabe Stulman], who open multiple concepts in a particular neighborhood to serve a similar audience. Like Everson Royce Bar, Molina anchors the menu with his signature flaky biscuits with honey butter and a single-patty burger made with ground chuck and Tillamook cheddar. Starters include shaved celery salad with medjool dates, roasted carrots with cumin vinaigrette, and fideos with clams, chorizo, and saffron. Most starters range $12 to $24, bucking the trend of inflationary prices that seem to affect most new LA restaurants. A short list of six mains includes the burger with fries for $23, and extends to barbecue pork loin with Anson Mills polenta, grilled prawns, or grilled New York steak with pommes aligot. An olive cake with a side of crème fraiche is the sole dessert. Molina says the menu will not feature pasta during its opening phase, but he might add some in the future. Beverages at Cannonball are another strong suit, with Joe Capella's extensive wine and spirits knowledge on full display. Capella priced the wines to drink now (he would like the entire inventory to turn over every six months), with glasses between $14 and $17, and a long bottle list with prices that are often lower than online retail. He was inspired by places he's visited in Stockholm and Japan that price wine and spirits at an accessible level and allow enthusiasts to actually 'taste the fruits' of often labor-intensive curation. 'We're not trying to profit disproportionately just because it's rare and in demand,' Capella told Eater over email. There are plenty of wines priced between the high-$30s and mid-$40s, alongside higher-end bottles for those looking to ball out. Cocktails come from a longtime relationship with Varnish co-founder Eric Alperin, who advised on the drinks and helped install lead bartender Wolfgang Alexander at Cannonball. Drinks reflect the Milk & Honey school of bartenders with playful takes on classics like the Raymond Hill (Manhattan) using bourbon, amaro lucano, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and mole. Fettle Design helped preserve the building's main interior, hoping to conjure a New York, East Coast, and London feel that stands in contrast to places like Hippo. Capella and Fettle saw the moody space working with a darker color palette; tasteful landscape art, vintage lighting, indoor plants, and pops of old-timey wallpaper complete the look. A more cheerful patio with French cafe-style chairs and greenery works well as an al fresco summer dinner. Eventually, service will expand daily to later hours and a daytime menu on weekends (no weekday lunch, though). With two industry veterans at the helm and a versatile, classic ambience — plus the very approachable food — Cannonball has brightened South Pasadena's dining scene in a big way.
