Karnataka HC Appoints Amicus Curiae in Bengaluru stampede case

The Karnataka high court on Monday appointed senior advocate S Susheela as the amicus curiae to assist the court in the suo motu proceedings it has initiated following the deadly stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on June 4 that killed 11 and injured several others. Fans wave as a bus carrying the IPL 2025 winning Royal Challengers Bengaluru team arrives at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bengaluru, Karnataka, Wednesday, June 4, 2025. (PTI) A bench of acting chief justice V Kameswar Rao and justice CM Joshi said that the amicus curiae must also assist the court on whether the status report filed by the Karnataka government on the stampede in a sealed cover must be kept confidential or whether its contents deserve to be made public. The court directed the state to provide a copy of its status report and all other relevant documents to advocate Susheela, so that she can file her statement of objections. The June 4 stampede took place ahead of IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)'s victory celebration and the high court had initiated suo motu proceedings into the case on June 5. It had posed nine questions to the state government at the time, including who had authorised the event, how crowd control and emergency care had been handled, and whether any prior assessment had been made of the expected turnout. The state that has since maintained that RCB was solely responsible for the large crowd at the stadium and the consequent stampede, had filed its response to the court's questions in a sealed envelope claiming its answers contained sensitive information and could 'prejudice some third parties'. Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty has repeatedly argued that the contents of the state's status report should remain in a sealed cover at least until the ongoing magisterial and a one-man judicial commission inquiries into the case are complete. However, several other lawyers, including those impleaded as parties in the suo motu PIL, have urged the court to make the contents of the report public since the state was accountable to the members of the public. The Bengaluru police has also registered three suo motu FIRs following the stampede and named RCB, event management DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association in the FIRs. All three entities have moved the court seeking the FIRs against them be quashed. The state has claimed that the stampede had taken place as RCB announced free entry passes for its victory parade at the stadium following its IPL victory. It has maintained that the entire celebration event was illegal as RCB or DNA had neither sought any requisite permissions, nor implemented safety measures to handle large crowds. The stampede occurred when, on June 4, millions of people gathered at the stadium hoping to watch RCB's victory celebrations. As per the state, while the stadium can accommodate a maximum of 30,000 people, at least 200,000 people had gathered at the spot.

Jasprit Bumrah Hits Back: 'People Said I'll Be Finished, But Jab Tak Bhagwan...'

Last Updated: 'People said I'll be finished in 8 months, I have now played for 12 years'. Jasprit Bumrah was not in the mood to hold back in the press conference! India's fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah said he has left it to the Almighty to decide how long he can continue to play for the country, and is only focusing on preparing as best as he can. His comments came after Day 3 of the Headingley Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, where he took 5/83 — his record third five-wicket haul in England. This was his first First-Class game since he picked up a serious back stress injury against Australia in Sydney in January that sidelined him for three months. 'People had said in all these years, some said, (I will play only) eight months, some said 10 months but now I have played 10 years of international cricket, 12-13 years of IPL," Bumrah remarked in the post-day press meet. 'Even now people say (after every injury), he will be finished, he is gone. Let them say, I will do my own work. Every four months, these things will crop up, but jab tak Bhagwan ne likha hai tab tak khelunga, apna best preparation karta hu and uske baad chorh deta hu Bhagwan ke upar, jitni mujhe barkat di hai (as long as the Almighty wants, I will play. I prepare my best, and then will leave it on God as to how much more blessings he will bestow upon me) and take Indian cricket forward," he added. Bumrah added that he was not concerned about changing people's opinions. 'What people write is beyond my control and I can't advise people on what to write about me. My name in headline gets viewership but I don't get bothered by that." The pacer is still unlikely to play all five Tests of the series. He has already confirmed he's looking at playing three to manage his body and avoid a repeat of Australia. Bumrah described the Headingley pitch as a 'two-paced' one that's still not too bad to bat on. He said the bowlers would love a cushion of runs from the batters. 'At this moment pretty good wicket to bat on. It is a little bit two paced, no big demons in wicket. Due to weather, new ball will swing but that is what you expect in Test cricket. We would like to get a big total and get that cushion," he said. First Published:

Sanjiv Goenka keeps it short and simple for KL Rahul but goes ga-ga over Rishabh Pant's century: 'Aggressive, audacious'

Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant might have struggled in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, but he has once again proved why Test cricket is his true calling. The left-handed batter is the just the second wicketkeeper in the history of the game to smash twin centuries in a Test match. In the second innings of the Headingley Test against England, the southpaw bludgeoned 118 runs off 140 balls with the help of 15 fours and 3 sixes. Sanjiv Goenka congratulated Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul following their second innings centuries(AFP) Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka congratulated Pant on becoming only the second wicketkeeper, after Zimbabwe's Andy Flower, to score centuries in both innings of a Test match. In the second innings, Rishabh Pant was slow off the blocks, but once the second session started, the left-hander changed his gears, and the 27-year-old went hell for leather against the England attack of Brydon Carse, Ben Stokes, Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir. Pant eventually brought up his century by taking a single off the bowling of Shoaib Bashir in the second innings. He did not pull out the somersault celebration despite repeated requests by Sunil Gavaskar from the stands. The left-handed batter was eventually dismissed by Bashir as he had the southpaw caught in the deep. Earlier, Pant had smashed 134 runs in the first innings. The LSG owner also gave a shoutout to KL Rahul for his ninth Test ton. The right-handed batter scored 137 runs off 247 balls, and his innings went a long way in India, setting England a target of more than 370 runs. Rahul was also involved in a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket with Rishabh Pant. 'Congratulations also to@klrahul for his hundred. #INDvsENG,' he wrote further. KL Rahul used to be the captain of Lucknow Super Giants. However, he was released by the team ahead of the IPL 2025 season. During one fixture against SunRisers Hyderabad, Goenka was publicly seen reprimanding Rahul following the side's ten-wicket hiding. A thrilling Day 5 awaits in the Headingley Test The Headingley Test between England and India hangs in the balance, with the hosts still needing 350 runs to win. At stumps on Day 4, England's score read 21/0 with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett unbeaten on 12 and 9 respectively. Earlier, India lost their final six wickets for 31 runs despite being 333/4 at one stage. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were the standout performers for India as they played knocks of 137 and 118, respectively. For England, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue scalped three wickets each. Earlier in the first innings, India had gained a slender lead of six runs after Jasprit Bumrah's five-wicket haul helped the visitors bundle out England for 465.
