9 dead, 22 injured in ‘terrorist' attack in Iran
Armed militants attacked during the early morning rush hour, but were opposed by the courthouse security team, Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
Three members of the security team and three civilians, including a woman and a child, were among those killed, while 22 others were injured. Three attackers also were killed.
The Jaish al-Adl "terrorist group" claimed responsibility for the attack that initially targeted the courthouse but led to attacks on nearby civilians, according to the IRNA report.
Jaish al-Adl is a "jihadist separatist group" and used small arms, grenade launchers and mortars during the two-phased attack, The Guardian reported.
The attack's first phase was an assault on the courthouse, where the militants fought with security forces for three hours.
Gunfire and explosions could be heard during the initial attack that ensued after Jaish al-Adl militants entered while disguised as civilians, The Jerusalem Post reported.
Three gunmen in their 20s and carrying backpacks carried out the attack, the news outlet reported.
The gunmen entered the judges' chambers and killed judicial staff, security and civilians, local police said.
The attack's second phase was a random attack on civilians outside the courthouse.
Jaish al-Adl is a Sunni Muslim group and warned Iranian civilians to "immediately evacuate the area of clashes for their safety" in a Telegram post in which the group claimed responsibility for the Zahedan courthouse assault.
Zahedan is located in the Sistan and Baluchestan provinces in southeastern Iran, where armed groups in nearby Pakistan and Afghanistan occasionally engage in violence.
The Jaish al-Adl group in October killed 10 police officers in Taftan County, which is one of that province's deadliest incidents in recent months.

DR Congo church attack kills more than 30 worshippers
An attack on a church in Komanda in northeastern DR Congo killed more than 30 worshippers, local officials said Sunday. Local sources said rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a group that has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group, stormed the church during a Saturday night service and killed 31 worshippers. Seven other bodies were discovered in the town. At least 35 people were killed Sunday in an attack by Allied Democratic Forces rebels in northeastern DR Congo, ending a months-long period of regional calm, local sources told AFP. The ADF, originally formed from former Ugandan rebels and which pledged allegiance to Islamic State in 2019, raided a Catholic church in the town of Komanda where worshippers were gathered for prayer, residents told AFP by telephone from Bunia, capital of Ituri province. "Last night around 9 pm (1900 GMT), we heard gunfire near the parish church... so far we have seen 35 bodies," Dieudonne Katanabo, an Umoja neighbourhood elder, told AFP. "We have at least 31 dead members of the Eucharistic Crusade movement, with six seriously injured... some young people were kidnapped, we have no news of them," Father Aime Lokana Dhego, parish priest of the Blessed Anuarite parish of Komanda, told AFP. Lieutenant Jules Ngongo, army spokesman in Ituri, did not comment on the toll but confirmed the attack to AFP, stating that "the enemy is believed to have been identified among ADF" rebels. The bloodshed comes after months of calm in the region of Ituri, bordering Uganda. The last major attack by the ADF was in February, leaving 23 dead in Mambasa territory. The town of Komanda in Irumu territory is a commercial hub linking three other provinces -- Tshopo, North Kivu, and Maniema. The ADF, originally Ugandan rebels who are predominantly Muslim, has killed thousands of civilians and ramped up looting and killing in northeastern DRC despite the deployment both of the Ugandan army alongside Congolese armed forces in the area. "We've seen encouraging signs of recovery": 11 injured in Michigan Walmart stabbing steadily improving
The conditions of the 11 people who were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, are steadily improving, medical officials said Sunday morning. As of 9 a.m., four people are in serious condition and seven are in fair condition, according to Munson Healthcare. "Over the past 12 hours, we've seen encouraging signs of recovery from our patients," the northern Michigan-based company said in a written statement. "Our dedicated team of physicians, surgeons, nurses, clinicians, and support staff remain focused on providing a healing environment for all those affected by this tragic incident." The company added that it's working to provide emotional support for Walmart employees impacted by the attack. According to the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office, a 42-year-old man entered the Walmart around 4:43 p.m. on Saturday, and used a folding knife to stab five males and six females. The ages of the people stabbed are unknown. A sheriff's deputy was at the store "within minutes" and took the man into custody. People at the store assisted law enforcement in apprehending the man, according to the sheriff's office. The FBI is assisting with the ongoing investigation, according to Deputy Director Dan Bongino. "Violence like this is unacceptable," Joe Pennington, a Walmart spokesperson, told CBS News in a statement on Saturday. "Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we're thankful for the swift action of first responders." The sheriff's office and officials with Munson Healthcare are planning to provide an update on the incident at 2 p.m.
