Soccer-Spurs criticise online racist abuse aimed at forward Tel
(Reuters) -Tottenham Hotspur said on Thursday that they are "disgusted" by the online racial abuse aimed at French forward Mathys Tel after their UEFA Super Cup loss against Paris Saint-Germain.
Europa League winners Spurs squandered a 2-0 lead as they lost to European champions PSG 4-3 on penalties in a dramatic Super Cup in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday.
Tel and Dutch defender Micky van de Ven had missed their spot-kicks for Spurs during the shootout.
"We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat," Spurs said in a statement.
"Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards - hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.
"We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Mathys."
Tel, 20, signed for Spurs on a permanent deal after a four-month loan spell at the Premier League club from German side Bayern Munich in June.

Sailing-Brazil out of Germany Sail Grand Prix after high-speed crash in practice
(Reuters) -Brazil will not compete in the Germany Sail Grand Prix this weekend after their F50 foiling catamaran was damaged in Friday's practice while France raced against time to fix their F50 after both vessels crashed in Sassnitz. The incident occurred when the France team led by Quentin Delapierre suffered damage and the F50 boat fell off its foils. Just seconds later, Brazil's F50, which was going over 80 km/h, suddenly suffered a high-impact nosedive and came to a complete standstill as it capsized. SailGP said an investigation into the incident is under way but confirmed Brazil will not compete this weekend due to extensive damage. "Meanwhile the SailGP shore team will be working through the night to attempt to get France to the start line when racing begins tomorrow at 3.30 p.m. CEST (1330 GMT)," they said in a statement. SailGP said Delapierre was taken to hospital after practice to be checked over and was cleared of any injury. No Brazilians were hurt in their crash. Brazil are 10th in the standings with 13 points while France are sixth with 38 points. New Zealand's Black Foils top the table with 64 points. Soccer-Marshall Islands make history with first-ever international football match
(Reuters) -The Marshall Islands finally got off the mark in international football on Thursday and promptly lost 4-0 to the U.S. Virgin Islands on a high school pitch in Arkansas, but not before making history as the world's newest national team. The remote Pacific nation with fewer than 40,000 people played their first-ever international at the 3,000-capacity Jarrell Williams Bulldog Stadium in Springdale, better known as home to the local high school's American football team. "I feel surreal this morning; it's one of those out-of-body experiences," technical director Lloyd Owers told Reuters before the historic match. "I don't think we or anyone else thought we'd be here in two and a half years. The fact that it's going viral across the world is a great feeling." The English ex-semi-professional player from Oxfordshire, who took charge in 2022, led a squad this week that included players experiencing 11-a-side football for the first time. With just five training sessions together, the 20-man squad spans generations from a 15-year-old to a player in his early 40s. "The (team) were a bit nervy, understandably, but we have a good dynamic off the field and that has helped raise our game," Owers added. "Now we're going into these games wanting to compete and turn that nervous energy into a positive experience." The match kicked off the Marshall Islands' own creation — the Outrigger Challenge Cup, a four-team tournament featuring two FIFA members, Turks and Caicos Islands (world-ranked 206th)and U.S. Virgin Islands (207th), plus local side Ozark United's under-19 team. Northwest Arkansas was chosen as the venue because it hosts the largest Marshallese community in the United States and offers a convenient mid-point for Caribbean opponents. The Marshall Islands Soccer Federation, established in 2021 with the support of British volunteers and self-funded, harbours ambitions that extend beyond Thursday's outing. FIFA membership would unlock up to $8 million in funding over four years, but confederation membership is required first. Despite writing to Oceania, the Marshall Islands claim to have received no response, with the confederation citing a 'lack of direct air links' as the barrier. They are, however, considering applying to CONCACAF (the North American confederation) and the AFC (Asian confederation). Saturday brings their next challenge against the Turks and Caicos Islands and another chance to make history. Forest are set to play in the Europa League, having been promoted in Crystal Palace's place after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed the London club's appeal against UEFA's decision to demote them to the Conference League. Forest have signed four players -- forwards Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus, defender Jair Cunha and goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who joined on a free transfer from Norwich City. There have been eight departures, including winger Anthony Elanga's move to Newcastle United and Brazilian midfielder Danilo's switch to Botafogo, with Nuno describing his squad as unbalanced ahead of their Premier League opener at home to Brentford on Sunday.
