A car ploughed into a crowd of Liverpool fans during a parade celebrating their side's Premier League soccer title on Monday, and police arrested a 53-year-old local man shortly afterwards.
Merseyside police said a "number of pedestrians" were hit after the team's open-top coach carried players and coaching staff through the city centre for a victory parade.
"We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area," police said. "Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision."
Unverified social media video showed people lying in the road. A Reuters photographer saw emergency services carrying victims on stretchers to ambulances and debris scattered on the road. A tent was set up.
"We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident," police said.
A video on social media showed a car driving at speed into fans lining the street, at one point appearing to swerve away from the most densely crowded area.
Police surrounded the vehicle shortly afterwards, and other videos showed angry fans attempting to reach the driver.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on X that the scenes were "appalling" and he was being updated about the events.
"My thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident," Starmer said.
The team said on X it was in direct contact with police about the event. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident," Liverpool said. (Reuters)

The protests erupted in the northern town after the arrest of two teenagers accused of attempting to rape a young girl. The pair appeared on Monday in court, where they asked for a Romanian interpreter. Police have not confirmed the ethnicity of the teenagers, who remain in custody, but areas attacked on Monday and Tuesday included neighbourhoods where Romanian migrants live. Ministers from every party in the province's power-sharing executive strongly condemned "the racially motivated violence witnessed in recent days". Residents had been "terrorised" and police injured, they said in Wednesday's joint statement, urging people to reject the "divisive" agenda being pushed by a "destructive" minority. In response to what they termed "racist thuggery", police deployed riot officers with dogs and have asked forces in England and Wales for help quelling the unrest. People living in Ballymena described "terrifying" scenes in which attackers had targeted "foreigners" over the previous days. Despite City naming just 27 players from a possible 35 for the tournament beginning in the United States on June 14, Grealish was omitted alongside former captain Kyle Walker. All four of the club's new signings this week – Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli – are included. Ballon d'Or winner Rodri is also selected after making his comeback from a long-term knee injury just before the end of the Premier League season. Grealish, who remains City's record signing after a US$135 million move from Aston Villa in 2021, has fallen down the pecking order over the past two seasons.
