St. Johns County officials celebrate opening of new Mussallem Beachfront Park

Yahoo11-04-2025

The Mussallem Beachfront Park is officially open for business in Vilano Beach after $1.5 million and 18 months of work.
The newly renovated park includes beachfront access, changing rooms, and plenty of shaded table space, as well as cornhole and a nature trail overlooking Vilano Beach's marshlands.
The goal of the project is to provide plenty of recreational space for a county that finds its pride in its natural beauty.
'I hear all the time about beach access and people that live here do want to be able to enjoy our beaches and the fact that we got this amazing parking lot,' St. John's County Commissioner Anne Taylor told Action News Jax at Friday's ribbon cutting ceremony. 'Just so many things for the family, it could not be better.'
Marcia Mussallem told Action News Jax the park also serves as a great honor to her late father and former mayor of St. Augustine, Eddy Mussallem.
'It's just a tribute to him and his legacy to have this now for so many people to come and enjoy,' Maria said.

The project also meets a growing need in St. Johns County, after St. Johns County commissioner Christian Whitehurst voiced serious concerns about the ability of the county to provide enough recreational space with its projected population growth over the coming decades.
'Look at where we live, it's St. John's County. It's wonderful and we're keeping it, we're keeping it going. And it's just wonderful,' said Board of County Commissioners Chairwoman Krista Joseph.

St. Johns River Ferry back on the water after weeks out of service for repairs

For the first time in close to six weeks, the St. Johns River Ferry opened up for people looking for a quicker trip to and from work, home or a weekend trip. Action News Jax told you the first week of May when the ferry service went offline after the Jacksonville Transportation Authority said it hit the boarding ramp, leaving the Mayport Village side. JTA originally said inspections and repairs could take up to 12 weeks, but the authority says it was able to get the ferry back on the water two weeks ahead of schedule. 'I don't like to really go over the Dames Point. I take it every day. So if I have a chance to take the ferry or a nice scenic route, I'm definitely on board,' said Max, one of the riders taking the ferry from Mayport Village to Fort George for work. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Riders tell Action News Jax that having the ferry service suspended led to many more hours of driving over the last few weeks than they would have normally done. For some, it meant having to go onto I-95 and over the Dames Point Bridge as their way of getting across the St. Johns River and into Mayport. 'It's a 45-minute drive to go around everything,' said one of the riders after Action News Jax boarded the ferry. 'Having the ferry back open is very convenient and it's a nice environment.' Even though the ferry was away for more than a month, there's work being done to bring another boat on board. Action News Jax told you last fall, that JTA received a $15.6 million federal grant to buy a hybrid diesel-electric ferry to add to its St. Johns River service. JTA tells Action News Jax it's on schedule to be on the water by fall 2028. JTA says the ferry is now back on its regular schedule. Exotic car dealership suddenly no longer in service, clients seek answers

If you're driving down Beach Boulevard on Jacksonville's Southside, you'll pass Karma Automotive Dealership. Karma opened in Jacksonville in 2022. According to Sun Biz, it is owned by Vladimir 'Val' Ranguelov, who also owns Bul Auto Sales in Albany, New York. If you visit either of the dealerships' websites, a message pops up that reads: 'We regret to inform you we have ceased operations.' Read: Law Enforcement preparing for 'No Kings' protests across Northeast Florida this weekend Local television station, WNYT in Albany, contacted Action News Jax when it found out police there are investigating the dealership for potential fraud. Customers there claimed bank loans related to cars were never paid off. Shawn Branlund was a technician at Karma Jacksonville. On May 30th, He says he reached out to the owner after hearing of potential problems at the Albany location. 'He said to just come in on Monday, and we would talk about it, kind of explain what's going on,' Branlund said. 'On my end, I did come in on Monday to hopefully talk to the owner, Val, who never showed up, never got a hold of him. We ended up getting all our equipment out, just our personal belongings.' I spoke to a customer of Karma Jacksonville who told me he contacted JSO on June 5th because his car was missing from the dealership. Action News Jax obtained this video from that day that shows JSO and tow trucks taking the cars off the lot. Shawn says he never would have expected this from Val. 'He paid everyone really well, he was always taking us out on his boat, and taking us out to dinner. He's just a super nice guy, like, and definitely never saw this coming,' said Branlund. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< We reached out to JSO late this afternoon to get the report from the day they responded to the dealership, but we have not received the report yet. We reached out to the FBI in Jacksonville to find out if it had any active investigations in Karma Jacksonville. A spokesperson for the FBI Jacksonville says, 'The FBI does not confirm nor deny the existence or status of any investigation.' We tried to contact the owner directly at two different phone numbers, but were unable to get in contact with him [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] Click here to download the free Action News Jax news and weather apps, click here to download the Action News Jax Now app for your smart TV and click here to stream Action News Jax live.
