Police suspect motive in Passau car ramming was child custody dispute

Yahoo07-06-2025
Police suspect that the man who drove a car into a group of people in the southern German city of Passau on Saturday, injuring five, including his wife and their 5-year-old child, was likely involved in a child custody dispute.
"In the course of the ongoing criminal investigations, there are indications that a possible custody dispute may have been the trigger for the incident," police said. The three lived in the Passau area, the police added.
The man, a 48-year-old Iraqi national, has been detained and is being questioned. It is unclear whether he has made a statement about the incident.
A decision on whether the suspect will remain in custody is expected on Sunday.
The Passau Criminal Police Inspectorate, together with the Passau Public Prosecutor's Office, has taken over the investigation. Based on current findings, the allegation is attempted homicide.
The wife and daughter, along with three other injured individuals, are being treated in hospital. The severity of the injuries is not yet entirely clear, but no one is in a life-threatening condition, a police spokesman said.
The relationship between the other injured individuals and the family - if there is one - is not yet known, the spokesman added.
Incident occurred in mid-afternoon
The man drove his car into a group of people on the pavement in a street near Passau's main train station at around 3:30 pm (1330 GMT).
Police quickly assumed that the man had deliberately steered the vehicle into the group.
Passers-by alerted police
People in the area alerted the police, and the injured were taken to hospital by ambulance. The scene of the incident was cordoned off, and the car involved removed with a crane in the early evening.
Police have called on witnesses to contact the Passau Criminal Police Inspectorate.
In February, a car in the southern city of Munich drove into a demonstration march, injuring dozens of people.
Two of the injured - a woman and her 2-year-old daughter - later died in hospital. The then 24-year-old suspected perpetrator remains in pre-trial detention.

Livonia woman accused of shooting at friend's father after being asked to leave his home

A Livonia woman is charged with assault with intent to murder after she allegedly shot at her friend's father at his Macomb County home. Kimberly Lozano, 31, was arraigned Monday on charges of assault with intent to murder, two counts of felony firearms, discharging a firearm in or at a building, and assaulting or resisting a police officer. Macomb County prosecutors allege that on Aug. 17, Lozano shot at her friend's father, Willie Richardson, after he asked her to leave his Eastpointe home. Richardson was not struck in the shooting. As police were attempting to arrest Lozano, prosecutors say she did not follow the officer's instructions, and more officers were called to assist in arresting her. "We cannot allow people to settle conflicts with firearms. The moment a weapon is drawn, what could have been a dispute becomes a life-threatening crime. When one person chooses to fire a gun in anger, they place not only the intended target at risk, but others who are nearby. Violence is not a solution; it's a choice, and it comes with consequences," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido in a statement. Lozano was given a $350,000 bond and is back in court for a probable cause conference on Aug. 27. She has a preliminary examination on Sept. 3.

2 people shot dead in North Vallejo neighborhood

Two people are dead following a shooting in a Vallejo neighborhood on Monday night, police said. The shooting happened on Amelia Street, north of Highway 37 and east of Fairgrounds Drive in North Vallejo. The Vallejo Police Department said in a press release on Tuesday that officers who responded to a report of a shooting found two men who each had been shot at least once. Medics arrived and declared one victim dead at the scene, police said. The other victim was taken to a hospital, where he died. Police said the motive and circumstances surrounding this shooting remained under investigation. There was no suspect information available. "These senseless acts of violence affect not just the victims and their families, but our entire community," said Police Chief Jason Ta in a prepared statement. "The Vallejo Police Department is fully committed to pursuing those responsible and ensuring justice is served." The identities of the victims were withheld by the Solano County Coroner's Office until family members were notified. Police said they were the 9th and 10th homicides in the city of Vallejo in 2025. Police asked anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Daniel Callison at (707) 648-4533 or or Detective Jordon Patzer at (707) 648-4278 or Anonymous tipsters can call 800-488-9383.
