The Scottish garden with beach that was named 'best seaside garden' in the country
Scotland is home to countless idyllic and colourful gardens. If you are looking for a day out in picturesque surroundings, you can't go wrong with any of them.
However, for something that extra bit special, the country also features many gardens nestled along the coast. A seaside garden is perfect for those looking to enjoy some spectacular coastal scenery.
As reported by the Daily Record, the best seaside gardens in Scotland were recently named by Discover Scottish Gardens. Among the gardens that were singled out by the experts is Arbigland House and Gardens in Dumfries and Galloway.
Arbigland House is an 18th century mansion located just outside of the village of Kirkbean. It is surrounded by 24 acres of woodland gardens.
The house was constructed in the Classical Adams-style by William Craik, who introduced the Agricultural Revolution to Scotland. Those visiting the estate's lovely gardens can book a tour of the house's incredible and historic principal rooms.
According to the Arbigland House and Gardens website, a lot of the trees that line the Broad Walk from the main house are more than 200 years old. At the end of the walk, there is a picturesque viewpoint across to the Lake District fells.
While the gardens are primarily made up of woodland, there are a few formal sections. These include a Sunken Garden with roses and a Pavilion that was built by Italian Prisoners of War.
Elsewhere, there is a Sundial Garden. Here visitors can find a sundial that dates back to 1815 and commemorates the Battle of Waterloo.
Other scenic spots in the grounds are the Well Head Garden and the Japanese Garden. The former is home to unusual plants and trees, while the Japanese Garden features a variety of acers and cherries.
The gardens run all the way down from the mansion to a beach that offers panoramic views across the Solway Firth to the Cumbrian Hills.
As well as being recognised by Discover Scottish Gardens, the House and Gardens won a Travellers' Choice Award in 2024. According to the travel guidance platform, it is also one of the best days out around Dumfries.
Arbigland House and Gardens has also received very positive feedback from day trippers. On Google, the attraction has a rating of 4.8 out of five based on 49 reviews.
One tourist posted: "Lovely peaceful gardens and walks. Staff very helpful and friendly, especially Wayne."
Another wrote: "Beautiful garden and a must to visit if you are in the area. There is seating by the beach carved out of logs so it's a great place to sit and have your lunch."

Jet2 blasted after Grans put on flight to wrong Spanish island

Two elderly woman have slammed holiday giant Jet2 after a shocking airport mix-up saw them put on the wrong plane — and only realised it mid-air when the captain said they were landing in the wrong place. The pensioners, who both suffer from mobility issues and had booked special assistance, branded it a 'catalogue of disasters' and accused Jet2 of treating them worse than luggage, reports the Mirror. Linda fumed: 'You get compensation if your bags go missing — but they lost us, not the bl**dy baggage!' The pals, who both use wheelchairs, were given help through security at Bristol Airport, shown to the gate, and even directed into their seats by cabin crew before the horror realisation mid-flight. 'I burst into tears,' said Linda. 'I turned to Wendy and said, 'He said Menorca — not Majorca!' The flight attendant laughed when I told her. That's when the chaos started.' The blunder was so severe even the captain admitted he'd never seen anything like it in his career. But despite offering to personally fly them to Majorca, Linda claims Jet2 bosses overruled it 'due to security.' Wendy, who has undergone three brain surgeries and suffers from arthritis, said: 'It's terrifying how easy it was. They bang on about airport security, but two strangers got on a plane with five checks and no one noticed!' To make things worse, their luggage made it to Majorca without them — a major security breach that could've had dangerous consequences. 'Our bags flew without us. That's terrifying,' Wendy added. The women ended up stranded in Menorca for hours before being put on another flight. By the time they arrived at their resort, they'd been travelling for 17 hours instead of five. A Jet2 rep at the hotel refused to meet them, and when they finally got a call from the airline two days later, they were offered a 'free excursion' — despite both being physically unable to walk. 'I thought it was a joke,' Linda said. 'We couldn't even get out of bed, let alone go sightseeing!' Despite being the talk of their resort — with fellow holidaymakers recognising them as 'the ladies who got on the wrong flight' — the pair said their break was 'ruined.' They've still not received compensation from Jet2, despite their travel agent and family contacting the company multiple times. So far, only Bristol Airport has issued an apology. Wendy added: 'This could've been so much worse. It was traumatic for us — but what if it had been someone with a serious health issue, or worse? This must never happen again.' Jet2 has since apologised, blaming the blunder on a 'human error' by a third-party special assistance provider. The airline claims to have 'retrained staff' and offered the women a gesture of goodwill. They said: "We would like to offer our sincere apologies to Mses. Trestrail and Russell for this incident. This is an extremely isolated incident and although there was no security risk, we have of course investigated it as a matter of urgency, including with the third-party special assistance provider. We can confirm that the customers went through security correctly, and their luggage was also screened correctly. "However, after these checks the customers were taken to the incorrect aircraft, which is the responsibility of the third-party special assistance provider at the airport. Upon boarding the aircraft, the incorrect destination on their boarding passes was unfortunately not identified and we apologise for this oversight which was down to human error. "We have carried out additional training with the team to ensure this does not happen again. As soon as we learned of the issue, our team booked Mses. Trestrail and Russell onto the soonest available flight from Menorca to Majorca and they also provided all the assistance they could both throughout their journey and the rest of their holiday. "We have been in touch with Mses. Trestrail and Russell to offer an appropriate gesture of goodwill and once again offer our sincere apologies. We understand they are due to travel with us once again this year, and we look forward to welcoming them onboard and delivering the usual VIP customer experience that we are recognised for." But for Linda and Wendy, the trust is broken. Linda said: 'We were terrified flying home. You're supposed to feel safe in their hands. They lost people, not just bags. That says it all.'

Brighton thrill-seeker to attempt to ride 120 rollercoasters in UK in just over two weeks
A thrill-seeking man is to begin an attempt to ride every rollercoaster in the UK in little over two weeks. Dean Stokes, 36, believes he will become the first person to achieve the feat if he can succeed in riding 120 coasters across 32 theme parks in 16 days, starting in Brighton and ending at Thorpe Park. Mr Stokes worked for five years at Google before leaving the corporate ladder to set up his own business delivering technology training, having grown tired of being unable to try new things. The former UK head of Google for Education decided to set up his own YouTube channel as part of his new work and has already seen his videos about his planned adventure viewed hundreds of thousands of times across social media platforms. Mr Stokes, from Brighton, in East Sussex, told his former Google colleague Simon Fasolo, 44, about his plan to travel the UK in pursuit of the aim. And Mr Fasolo, from Perth, Australia, decided it would be a great way to explore the country – despite hating rollercoasters himself and refusing to join his friend on the rides. The two will begin at Brighton Palace Pier, home to the Crazy Mouse and Turbo rollercoasters, and, according to the route map on the website, hope to have conquered four parks and eight rides in total by the end of the first day. Mr Stokes said: 'I've ridden over 100 rollercoasters in around 25 different theme parks across 10 different countries. 'But I still haven't actually ridden loads of rollercoasters in the UK, so I just thought, why not? 'One of the reasons I left the corporate world was to have a bit more variety in the work that I do and so starting the YouTube channel on the tech side was part of that. 'And I just thought, if I was going to make a channel that was completely different to that, what would it be? And it would probably be rollercoasters and theme parks because I'm a big fan. 'I've included every rollercoaster that's classed as a thrill or extreme rollercoaster, to avoid family and children's rides. But we plan to do all of them consecutively. 'As far as I know, I think I'll be the first person to do it – the only person mad enough to do it.' Mr Stokes said he is open to ideas or suggestions from his followers on social media of tasks within the challenge. The duo have booked around half of the hotels, and plan to travel in a hire car, but delays and unforeseen issues could lead to a stressful journey. He said: 'I think it's going to be quite a lot of stress at points, but I'm looking forward to it overall. 'On social media, I realised it was really resonating with people. 'I think people want to go out and have fun and I think that often we are too scared to get out and just do the things that we love, especially as adults. 'There's this whole community out there that loves theme parks, whether they're proper enthusiasts or just people that like going in the summer with their family, and they are now really excited to follow my progress.' He added: 'Someone commented and said it is the UK theme park enthusiast's dream. It might be difficult, so I'll have to decide whether it feels like a dream at the end of it or not. There are theme parks the two plan to visit across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and they are planning on driving to Dublin for an extra set of rides in the Republic of Ireland. Mr Stokes is excited to support many of the amusement parks which are run as independent businesses, as well as visiting historic seaside resorts, such as Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, which is over a hundred years old. He has asked for permission to film for his YouTube, TikTok and Facebook, and a number of the theme parks have even offered him free tickets. Mr Stokes said: 'A lot of the parks have come back to me and are really on board with the whole idea. 'I need the good summer weather to continue, as I've only packed shorts and T-shirts, and one jacket. But if it all goes to plan, it should be a great trip 'And I'm already looking for inspiration for my next challenge once it's complete – I think the natural next step would be to choose another country and do the same. 'Germany has loads of world world-class theme parks, so we could go and do it there. 'But maybe it could be a country that I've never been to. I know Japan has a few theme parks that'd be cool to get around. But I'll do well to finish this challenge first.'
