Jordan Spieth's PGA Tour rival's fate after he 'ruined his life'

Jordan Spieth may well have secured victory at the 2015 John Deere Classic via a dramatic playoff, but his fellow players did not let him forget it for all the wrong reasons.
Spieth
- now looking to follow in the footsteps of
Rory McIlroy
in winning the career Grand Slam
after his Masters victory this month
- emerged triumphant at TPC Deere Run during his incredible
PGA Tour
run back in 2015. Bagging his fifth title in just two years, he also secured the John Deere Classic title for the second time.
Having claimed victory through a playoff in 2013, Spieth once again faced an intense showdown two years on, this time against veteran Tom Gillis.

His second John Deere victory involved him edging out Gillis, a contender 15 years his senior and hungry for his first PGA Tour victory. While Gillis saw his dream crumble when he sent his ball into the drink on the second playoff hole, Spieth's talent and form led him to success.
Following victory, Spieth only continued to go in one direction, winning the Tour Championship shortly after, and padding his impressive career with seven more titles, including his third major at The Open. Sadly, the same upward trend didn't hold for Gillis, who missed out on a pivotal two-year exemption due to the defeat.
Spieth, albeit in jest, found himself the butt of a playful joke among his peers for denying Gillis the title of Tour's oldest victor. "There's a funny story a handful of years ago. Jordan Spieth was in a playoff with Tom Gillis, who doesn't play professionally anymore," shared Justin Thomas during his chat with Pardon My Take.
"And Jordan beat Tom in a playoff, and for the whole year, Jason Duffner was grilling Jordan. He's, like, 'Man, you just ruined Tom Gillis's career. He would have had a two-year exemption. He would have been Mali Kapulua. He would have taken his family there. They would have been swimming with the Dolphins at the Tournament Champions, but you had to beat him in a playoff and ruin his life.'".

Even though he failed to reach the soaring heights of Spieth, Gillis carved out a respectable playing career for himself, snagging ten professional wins. His most recent triumph was at the Nationwide Tour, clinching the Nationwide Tour Players Cup back in 2009.
After his playoff defeat by Spieth, Gillis nabbed a spot at the 144th Open at St Andrews and then played five more PGA Tour events in 2015. Failing to lock down a full Tour card, Gillis bounced between the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour the next year, before stepping into senior golf upon hitting the big five-oh in 2018.
His shining moment as a pro was that narrow miss to the three-time major champ in Illinois, along with a close second-place finish beside Tiger Woods at the 2012 Honda Classic, both times falling short to McIlroy.
Despite not managing to outdo Spieth a decade ago, Gillis was fully cognizant of his accomplishment as the runner-up. "Being in a playoff with Jordan Spieth, who is probably playing better than anybody in the world right now," he said at the time, according to the Detroit Free Press.
"I think that was really exciting. I take the confidence away from the tournament itself, how well I played for the four days there. Getting back into contention and hanging in there, playing well during it."
After losing his PGA Tour status, he dabbled in minor tours in the following years before getting his shot in senior golf.
His career finally drew to a close last year at the age of 55, participating in his final tournament at the Champions Tour's Ally Challenge last August, on the very course where he played his first PGA Tour event 21 years earlier at Warwick Hills.

Bill Belichick under fire as UNC staff 'concerned' about Jordon Hudson scandal

UNC chiefs are reportedly concerned about Jordan Hudson's influence on Bill Belichick ahead of his first season in Chapel Hill after she caused a stir during his recent interview with CBS. The NFL legend had sat-down with reporter Tony Dokoupil to promote his new book, "The Art of Winning," when he was asked how he had met his 24-year-old girlfriend . Before he could reply, however, Hudson butted in with a swift: "We're not talking about this", before telling Dokoupil: "No", when he looked over in her direction to confirm. The clip has been widely shared across social media and has led to concern among fans. In a voiceover, Dokoupil reveals how their relationship is "a topic neither one of them is comfortable talking on," adding how Hudson was a "constant presence" during his interview with Belichick. It left many fans questioning Hudson's behavior and calling the interview one of the most "awkward" they've ever seen. Belichick had also only arrived at the interview with Hudson and no one from his publishing company or the University of North Carolina . He had been scheduled to sit down for a second interview at a later time but his girlfriend's antics in the CBS Studio meant it was ultimately scrapped. It appears as though fans aren't the only one's concerned by the situation, however, with the report adding how the whole ordeal isn't sitting well with Belichick's new employers. Higher-ups at UNC are said to be concerned about Hudson's influence on Belichick's tenure at Kenan Stadium, especially after appearing to have taken on a role as his manager, with a source telling TMZ that there's a "growing sense this could become a problem." The influencer was wearing a long Carolina blue coat over a white top paired with a blue skirt and white boots as she spoke to Belichick on the sideline. While many took issue with Belichick bringing his partner to a practice session, it appeared that the former cheerleader-turned-influencer was helping the UNC coach deal with audio equipment. NBC Sports claims that Hudson is part of a team working on a documentary about Belichick's venture into college football . It came shortly after it was revealed that the veteran coach had requested his girlfriend be copied on correspondence as part of emails uncovered by Axios and The Assembly . A second post from The Assembly then revealed that other emails showed Hudson getting copied on messages regarding whether to accept interview requests, giving some credence to previous reports that claimed Hudson was the coach's 'de facto agent.'

NFL coach doesn't hide feelings on Quinn Ewers following dramatic NFL Draft slide

Draft night didn't pan out as expected for former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers, once celebrated as the second-ranked high school recruit, was taken by the Miami Dolphins as the 231st pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. It's a consensus among NFL scouts that he was only the 14th-best draft-eligible quarterback of his class in 2025, with two FBS quarterbacks from Division II picked before the ex-Longhorn. This is particularly notable considering Ewers had previously turned down nearly $6 million in potential earnings to transfer with an NIL deal. Shedeur Sanders, who signed an eye-watering NIL deal while at Colorado, suffered a slide of his own before being taken by the Cleveland Browns . He even shared a photo standing with Ewers captioned: "Welcome to the great state of Florida , Quinn! Miami got themselves quite the arm and a young man that loves football!". In the photo, Ewers is sporting a shirt saying "Gruden's QB Class," which tips the hat to Gruden's traditional pre-NFL Draft show, reports the Mirror US . As things stand, it seems unlikely that Ewers will secure active playing time with the Dolphins in 2024, considering he's presently third on the quarterback depth chart behind the frequently sidelined Tua Tagovailoa and former number two pick Zach Wilson. Ewers was universally heralded as the number two high school recruit. After securing a significant NIL deal, he reclassified and played backup to C.J. Stroud, who is now shining for the Houston Texans. tweet Ewers made his move to Texas and impressed during his three seasons as a Longhorn, clocking in 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns, along with a sharp completion rate of 64.8 percent. Despite leading Texas to an impressive 21-5 record over two years and earning two spots in the College Football Playoffs, Ewers watched his draft status take a hit. His time with the Longhorns was marred by sporadic injuries, including issues with his AC and SC joints, which led to seven missed starts. Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian sang high praises for his ex-quarterback's influence on the program. "I think about a lot of the people that come through this program over the last four years that have impacted the growth and trajectory of our program, and he's right there near the top, if not at the top of the impact that he's had, not only on the field but off the field," Sarkisian stated. Grier had kind words for his seventh-round pick. "Sark really likes him and was high on him, talking about him playing through the injuries this year -- which affected his play a little bit," Grier expressed. "But [Sarkisian] talked about his toughness, his mental toughness pushing through with the injury, the expectations, all the pressure with [Arch] Manning there coming in." Grier also highlighted the player's drive and effect on the team: "He loved his competitiveness and how he plays, and how his teammates respond to him. So, he was someone that we always had an eye on, and the opportunity at that point in the draft just made sense for us."

Bryson DeChambeau's brutal assessment of 'diabolical' LIV Golf course

Bryson DeChambeau slammed Club de Golf Chapultepec as "diabolical" after enduring another bout of final-round woes, this time unfolding at LIV Golf Mexico City . The American powerhouse entered the third round atop the leaderboard, following an encouraging start which was helped by some huge drives . Nevertheless, as the round progressed, the Crushers' leader was overtaken by Joaquin Niemann, who clinched his third LIV season trophy and a prized berth in the U.S. Open. For DeChambeau, it marked yet another difficult Sunday — his second in just a fortnight. Earlier in the month, DeChambeau watched the Masters' victory and his chance at a first green jacket slip through his fingers as Rory McIlroy triumphed, securing the career Grand Slam and snapping an 11-year major drought . He must have longed for redemption in Mexico, but once more faltered when it mattered most. Many had predicted DeChambeau would prosper in Mexico City's high altitude, where the thin air would further amplify his formidable driving distance. His tee-off prowess was evident all week, yet it did not translate into bagging his inaugural LIV crown since the preceding year. After blazing through the course with an impressive eight-under-par 63 on day one, DeChambeau shared his thoughts with the press: "The golf course is gettable, but it's diabolical, as well. There were a lot of moments where I felt like I was going to get it to nine, ten-under, and there were moments where I'm like, man, 'I could be three-under or two-under easily if I don't get my act in shape." He continued to describe the whimsical nature of the course, saying: "It's a teeter-totter golf course. You can hit a drive down by the green, but it depends on the lie, depends on the flag, depends on if you can make some six, seven-footers out here." Questions followed on the subsequent day seeking further insights into the conditions that presented the main challenges, particularly regarding the taxing pin positions. Bryson DeChambeau had another tough Sunday at LIV Mexico City (Image: Getty Images) Elaborating on the difficulties posed, he explained, "So there's some areas where the grass is really thick. And you barely get in the rough, and you can have a super thick li,e and it comes out dead and you have no control of the ball, and there are areas where in the rough it's super firm and dry and fast and you can get fliers out of there.." Ending with a reflection on the greens, he emphasized the stark contrast of playing conditions. "On the greens, if you're above the hole on certain pin locations, considering where they placed them this week, it's nearly impossible. So really, placing yourself in good positions and giving yourself a chance to make birdie every single hole is key, but it's diabolical because of that dry factor and then wet factor that we have out here." Although DeChambeau didn't emerge victorious, he seemed to have won over the Mexican crowd, who showed him a lot of love. He praised their support, saying: "They're amazing people, encouraging, loving, just want to support you and cheer you on and shout your name really, really loud."
