Broncos respond to Sam Thaiday news after NRL great goes public with awful revelation
The Brisbane Broncos have joined fans in congratulating Sam Thaiday after the retired NRL great was crowned the winner of 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here' on Sunday night. And it came after the Queensland champion revealed the heartbreaking reasons for his appearance on the reality TV show.
Thaiday was named the winner ahead of Matty J and Reggie Bird on Sunday night, leaving fans delighted for the NRL great. On Monday, the Brisbane Broncos wrote on social media: "King of the Jungle. A big congrats to Sammy on being crowned the winner of I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2025 and helping out a great cause."
That great cause they mentioned is the 'Find Ya Feet' charity, which Thaiday won $100,000 for. Earlier in the season, the 39-year-old explained why the charity means so much to him as he laid bare some of the personal struggles he overcame as a youngster.
'My charity is called Find Ya Feet. It's run by a guy named Tommy Herschel,' Thaiday told the other celebs. 'He goes into schools and helps young boys, and he gives them a safe place to share their feelings and talk about how they're feeling. I sat in on one of his sessions and to hear how brave some of these young boys were in opening up and sharing their stories about what was going on in their lives.'
Thaiday, who played 304 games for the Broncos as well as 29 State of Origin games for Queensland and 32 Test matches for Australia, made the heartbreaking admission on national TV that he contemplated suicide when he was a teenager. 'As a 13-year-old boy, I wanted to take my own life, and I wish I had someone like Tommy around to let me know that it was okay to talk about my feelings," he said.
"As a young kid, I really struggled to find my place. I found myself too white to be black and too black to be white, and didn't know where I fit in. And if I had someone like Tommy Herschel in my life as a young kid, maybe I would have shared a lot of these stories a lot earlier in my life.
'He's a bit of a one-man band at the moment, and I just thought he needed help. So that's why I'm in here. And hopefully even, like, I don't even have to win it, I just want to raise some awareness for him, I want people talking about it.'

It wasn't the first time Thaiday spoke publicly about his mental health demons, after opening up in an interview back in 2020. But it brought it to the attention of a national audience on TV for the first time, and gave 'Find Ya Feet' some much-needed exposure.
'I had bottled up my feelings for so long not knowing how to express them," he told the in 2020. "I told her (the therapist) my story and I left that session somewhat motivated to tell people my story. Hopefully by getting my story out I can encourage people to speak up.
'I still have moments now where I second guess myself. Self doubt is the loudest voice in your head. That kind of was an ongoing thing throughout my whole life. I want to learn and grow and get better to make that the quietest voice in side my head. I see myself right now as being a little bit lost and lonely at times."

Rugby league legend Mal Meninga set to be inaugural coach of NRL expansion club Perth
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — The National Rugby League's newest team will have one of its oldest coaches when it begins play in 2027. Australia head coach and ex-Kangaroos and Queensland Origin star Mal Meninga was unveiled Friday as the Perth Bears ' inaugural head coach. The 64-year-old Meninga signed a three-year contract with the new franchise, meaning he could be 69 when his contract expires in 2030. NRL coaching great Wayne Bennett — now in charge at the South Sydney Rabitohs — is the oldest coach at the sport's elite level at 75. Craig Bellamy, who is 65, confirmed this week that he will continue coaching the Melbourne Storm into his 24th consecutive year next season. Meninga is one of the most decorated players and coaches in rugby league history, having coached Canberra (1997-2001) and Queensland (2006-2015) after playing 46 test and World Cup matches for Australia's Kangaroos, 32 State of Origin matches for Queensland and captaining the Raiders to three national titles. Before becoming Kangaroos coach in 2016, Meninga led the Queensland Maroons to their most successful period in Origin history, winning nine of his 10 series in charge. Meninga will relinquish his Australia national team coaching duties later this year in order to have 18 months to begin putting together the Bears' initial lineup of players. 'This is bigger than me,' Meninga said Friday. 'This new pioneering venture over to WA (Western Australia) and the opportunity to be involved in the growth of the game, to grow a club — the Perth Bears — is too good to refuse. I feel very honored, very nervous, and I think it's a huge responsibility.' The sport's premier competition originated in Sydney but has expanded to include a team in New Zealand, a team in the Australian capital, Canberra, a team in the Victoria state capital, Melbourne, and four teams in Queensland state. Perth Bears will enter the NRL from Australia's west coast before a team from rugby league-mad neighboring Pacific country Papua New Guinea, which is due to join in 2028 and make it a 19-team competition. Mary Fowler dream shattered as Panthers handed huge news about Nathan Cleary
Mary Fowler's dream about starting a big family has been dealt a blow, with reports her boyfriend Nathan Cleary has no interest in quitting the NRL to move overseas. The Penrith Panthers star has consistently been linked with a move to play in Europe to be closer to the Matildas fan favourite, who is based in England and plays for Manchester City. Rumours have been rife for months that Cleary might switch to the English Super League in the near future to be closer to Fowler. And Wallabies legend Tim Horan suggested Cleary was considering a switch to rugby union after hearing whispers that the four-time premiership winner was "quite keen" to leave the NRL for the 15-man game. Another former Wallaby, Morgan Turinui, appeared to add credence to the story by insisting "there is interest on both sides". But veteran sports journalist Andrew Webster revealed on his 'Off the Record' Podcast with Phil 'Buzz' Rothfield, that Cleary's father and coach Ivan, plus manager George Mimis, both dismissed the reports as 'bulls**t'. "I spoke to George Mimis (Cleary's manager) and Ivan Cleary and Ivan told me he'd spoken to Nathan and they both said it's absolute bulls**t," Webster declared. "Nathan had said to Ivan 'there's nothing in it' and Ivan said to me he's been getting text messages and calls about this sort of stuff around Nathan leaving for about six months. "I spoke to Mimis and he says he hasn't had a discussion with any rugby union club, anywhere in the world." 'The only dream I have at the moment is to be a mum and have heaps of kids and be in a space where they can play outside a lot," she said. "We can do the gardening and feed the animals together and to be able to run wild in the place; be in the mud. If I had the set-up for that, it would be a dream. 'I would love to have two or three kids of my own and then adopt. I don't know how many I would adopt, it's a long process. But in an ideal world I would like to adopt siblings. I would bring all of them into the home. 'The dream would definitely have a lot of outdoor space because I would love to have lots of animals... I really want to have a whole range of animals. It's very random and I'm trying to convince Nath that it would be a good idea. I really want to get a cow, some little goats, maybe a pig, some geese and I also really want to get a Great Dane.'

National Library of Wales missing 2,200 items
About 2,200 items are missing at the National Library of Wales - an increase of 84% in two years. Among the archives and manuscripts missing are deeds of 13th Century Powis Castle, and "rolls" and "pedigree" documents from Gwrych Castle in Abergele, Conwy county, which twice hosted ITV's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! Among missing books are the history of the national library building itself in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, by Daniel Huws, and books by George Bernard Shaw and Virginia Woolf. The library is creating a new "collection care" department and is currently recruiting a head of the department, as well as a head of unique collections. The number unaccounted for is significantly higher than the 1,200 items that were missing when BBC Wales gained figures through a Freedom of Information request in September 2023. A spokesperson said the increase is due to "new stock checking processes". The library is a legal deposit library, which means it is entitled to a copy of every print publication in Britain and Ireland, and no items are allowed to be taken from the building. Of the 2,206 missing items, the request under the latest Freedom of Information Act by BBC Wales showed that: 1,708 books and magazines are missing, some since 1999 393 maps, some since 1939 82 in the "archives and manuscripts" category, some since 1978 21 "screen and sound" items, some since 2019 two items in the "pictures and photographs" category, one since 2009 and the other since 2023 Missing archives include papers of J Glyn Davies whose songs for children include Cerddi Huw Puw (1923), which are based on sailors' songs he had heard during his youth. These have been described as bearing "the marks of a genius". Also missing are papers relating to Chirk Castle near Wrexham, the construction of which began around 1295 during the reign of Edward I. Missing sound recordings include the satirical song "Carlo" by Dafydd Iwan which was written for the investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales in 1969, and a recording by Treorchy Male Choir. Missing journals include issues of the library's own journal, Welsh History Review, Flintshire Historical Society, Gwent Local History and The Carmarthen Historian. Missing books cover topics from Owain Glyndŵr, the last native-born Welshman to claim the title Prince of Wales, to a biography of Keir Hardie, the first parliamentary leader of the Labour party. An 1818 edition of 'The Pleasures of Imagination' by Mark Akenside is missing, as is Lady Charlotte Schreiber's journals (1911), the "confidences" of a collector of ceramics and antiques. A book by Phil Thompson and Tommy Smith called "Do That Again Son, and I'll Break Your Legs: Football's Hardmen" is also not accounted for. Missing maps include a malt whisky map of Scotland, and several maps relating to Gogerddan, the principal estate of the old county of Cardiganshire in the 17th century. The library's head of communications, Rhodri ap Dyfrig, said that staff had "introduced new stock checking processes for published collections and therefore we fully expected that there would be an increase in the items recorded as not being in their correct location". He added: "The thorough process of monitoring of misplaced items takes place continuously and these checks are a normal and integral part of maintaining standards and good practice in the library sector. "Due to this constant monitoring and work, the data we provide is a snapshot of a specific period in time, and this figure fluctuates regularly as items are found and relocated." The library carries out an annual audit of items worth more than £10,000 and no missing items that cross that threshold were found over the last year. The library's collections include seven million books and newspapers, 1.5 million maps and 950,000 photographs located across 160 miles of shelves. The Welsh government said: "The care and management of its collections is a matter for the National Library. "In doing so, it meets the Archive Service Accreditation – the UK-wide standard for archive services."
