Newfoundland police charge man with arson for starting brush fires amid ban
On Tuesday, the St. John's Regional Fire Department responded to a number of brush fires in downtown St. John's within blocks of one another.
No injuries or structural damage were reported. The suspect is set to appear in a Newfoundland court on Thursday to face charges of arson with the disregard of human life.
Mark Lawlor, Newfoundland and Labrador's provincial fire duty officer, says the largest of the province's out-of-control wildfires continues to gain ground, helped by dry, windy conditions.

Lawlor says the fire near the coastal town of Kingston, N.L., on the Avalon Peninsula, has expanded to about 52 square kilometres.

He says it remains unclear how many homes or cabins in the area have been destroyed by the fire.

Thousands of people in Newfoundland and Labrador's capital and elsewhere in the province are under evacuation alerts as wildfires continue to threaten communities.
About 5,400 residents in two areas of St. John's were told on Tuesday to be ready to leave their homes at a moment's notice.
They joined roughly 15,000 others in parts of the nearby communities of Paradise and Conception Bay South who were placed under evacuation alerts a day earlier.

‘Needle attacks' reported at music festival in Montreal, police investigating
Montreal police (SPVM) say they have launched an investigation following reports that several people at îLESONIQ music festival may have possibly been unknowingly drugged with an unknown substance after reportedly being stabbed with a needle. Investigators are working in collaboration with festival organizers and security personnel from Evenko, the event's promoter, as the investigation continues. This comes after French police arrested 12 suspects back in June after 145 people reported being stabbed with syringes during France's' Fête de la Musique in Paris leading to the hospitalization of more than a dozen young women. The SPVM says victims and witnesses are encouraged to contact 911 or their local police station if they haven't already done so. Ontario brewery loses liquor licence after owner charged with drug trafficking
An eastern Ontario brewery has found itself in trouble after the owner was charged with drug trafficking. The Longtooth Beverage Company, located at 429 West Front St., in Stirling, Ont., had its liquor licence suspended by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) after the owner was charged with trafficking cocaine and other drugs. 'Illicit drug trafficking directly undermines public safety and the AGCO will continue to work with our partners in law enforcement to combat criminal activity wherever it is identified,' Karin Schnarr, the commission's CEO, said in a statement. Police say three people were arrested and charged with drug trafficking. Officers seized cocaine, a quantity of suspected LSD and psilocybin pills. Story continues below advertisement Among those charged is the owner and sole proprietor of the brewery. The commission said the licence suspension at the Longtooth Beverage Company is in response to the charges against the owner for his alleged role in a drug trafficking operation. The commission says under the Liquor Licence and Control Act, it has the ability to immediately suspend a liquor licence when it is considered in the public interest. The suspension is effective as of Aug. 14.
