Alabama baseball and Southern Miss probably didn't envision meeting like this in the Hattiesburg Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
The top two seeds in the four-team, double-elimination Hattiesburg Regional both lost on Friday. Alabama (41-17 overall), No. 20 in the Coaches Poll, fell behind 4-0 and just missed a walk-off home run in a 5-3 loss to the Miami Hurricanes at Pete Taylor Park.
Host Southern Miss (44-15) fared even worse on the scoreboard. The 14th-ranked Golden Eagles were routed, 11-4, by Ivy League champion Columbia in their home park.
Today won't be the first time Alabama and Southern Miss have met this season; the Crimson Tide defeated the Eagles, 10-6, in a Top 25 nonconference game April 8 in Tuscaloosa. But after Friday's results, one of those top 25 teams will be sent home after a very short stay in the NCAA Tournament.

His two-run homer in the second got the Rebels off and running. Dustin Mercer three hits for Murray State with two doubles and two RBIs. Mississippi is making its 26th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Rebels have played in six College World Series and won it in their most recent appearance in 2022.
