'We found through photos and videos that someone spread the rumour of electric wire breaking, while looking at the injured or the dead, we did not get any such indication… We will investigate who spread the rumour that caused the stampede and a magisterial inquiry will be set up investigating cameras and other means… The death of 6 people has been confirmed," he said.
SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal told news agency ANI that the stampede was triggered by the rumour of an electric shock on stairs 100 metres down the temple route.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami condoled the deaths in the incident and ordered a magisterial inquiry. He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Gujarat Confidential: ‘Suraksha Bandhan'
Taking a unique way, the Vadodara city police decided to celebrate Raksha Bandhan on Saturday with two-wheeler riders, in order to convey a message of 'inescapable' fines for not wearing helmets, coming into effect from September 15. In an attempt to deter riders from zooming on their two-wheelers without helmets, the Vadodara city police, led by Commissioner of Police Narasimha Komar and Joint Commissioner of Police Leena Patil, stopped two-wheeler riders and tied a rakhi on their wrists to celebrate 'Suraksha Bandhan'. Along with sweets, the riders were served the message of 'wearing the helmet unfailingly' to 'protect themselves' and follow the traffic rules. Interestingly, Vadodara BJP Lok Sabha MP Hemang Joshi on Friday made a public statement urging the city police to ensure strict enforcement of helmet rules. Joshi said, 'If you get calls from political leaders, pressuring you to set anyone free in a helmet- related offence, divert their calls to me. There can be no escaping this rule as it is for the safety of all.' Probe & Chaos The recent suspension of Vadodara Municipal Corporation's Head of Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Dr Devesh Patel, Chief Fire Officer Manoj Patil, and Deputy Fire Officer Naitik Bhatt over an alleged Rs 3.17 crore procurement scam has raised questions about the role of the scrutiny committee, third-party inspections, and the Standing Committee seemingly turning a blind eye to the process of tendering and procurement. The controversy took a chaotic turn late on Friday night when Committee Chairman Dr Sheetal Mistry 'summoned' the current in-charge Deputy Fire Officer, Amit Chaudhary, to bring the controversial items and tools for inspection. As Chaudhary arrived with the fire personnel, carrying a huge and heavy sack of the items to Mistry's office, members of the Vishwamitri Bachao Samiti, a citizens group, questioned the motive. Advocate Shailesh Amin, who is part of the group and was also present on the VMC premises when the fire officials arrived with the items, asked as to why the chairman summoned the fire officers without keeping the municipal commissioner in the loop. 'If the Standing Committee has claimed that inspecting the tender details does not come under its purview, then whose jurisdiction is it to physically inspect the controversial items. This is the same Standing Committee, which, in many instances, returns proposals citing inflated bill amounts… We have demanded that the state government must include the VMC under its 'Operation Gangajal' initiative.' Incidentally, Amin had, on Friday morning, dashed a letter to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel demanding 'Operation Gangajal' — the state government initiative to take action against allegedly corrupt officials — in the VMC.

Dharmasthala: Two new informants claim to have witnessed burials
Two new informants have met officers of the special investigation team (SIT) probing the claims about mass burials of alleged victims of murder and sexual assault at Dharmasthala, alleging that they had seen a body being buried at a new location, police said. ASpecial Investigation Team (SIT) examining the site in the Dharmasthala mass burial case in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. (PTI PHOTO) Meanwhile, the SIT is continuing its search for human remains in the Dharmasthala mass burials case, with renewed efforts based on new tip-offs. A fresh excavation was carried out at the Bahubali hills on Saturday, which yielded no results, police officers said. The team dug a 20-feet by 20-feet trench to a depth of about 10 feet under a dry tree, but no bodies or remains were found. A detailed search operation about 15 feet away from the previously marked Point 16 also yielded no evidence. So far, the investigation has involved excavations at 16 different locations. Skeletal remains have been found at Point 6 and 10, while the search at Point 13 was suspended due to technical issues. 'The recent events in Dharmasthala are disappointing. There is a malicious campaign being run against Dharmasthala. Dharmasthala is a sacred and revered place, and we stand firmly with it,' said BJP MLA SR Vishwanath in Chikkaballapura district's Gauribidanur. 'Lord Manjunathaswamy of Dharmasthala is very powerful; people fear to act against him. Yet, false propaganda is being spread about the holy shrine. Therefore, on August 16, we will organise a massive 'Dharmasthala Chalo' rally from Yelahanka to Dharmasthala,' he said. 'Over 200 cars with saffron flags will participate under the slogan 'We are with Dharmasthala'. We will visit the deity and return. After this, similar campaigns will begin in other parts of the state,' Vishwanath added. On the anonymous informant's claim in the mass burial case, he remarked: 'If the person says he buried victims of rape and murder, then he himself should be hanged first. If he knew about such crimes and still buried the bodies, he too is guilty. He should be punished before anyone else.' 'Some people are trying to gain attention by spreading lies that hundreds of bodies were buried in Dharmasthala. This has hurt Hindus across the country. The anonymous person must be arrested,' demanded former deputy chief minister KS Eshwarappa in Shivamogga. 'There is a deliberate attempt to insult the Hindu community and create suspicion about a sacred place like Dharmasthala. The state government must immediately find out who is behind this. One person claims to have buried hundreds of bodies in 13 places. Could he have done it alone? Which anti-national and anti-religious group is backing him?' he asked. Eshwarappa further said: 'There is a conspiracy to spread false propaganda about Dharmasthala. The anonymous person has failed to show the burial sites. The state has already issued an order allowing the questioning and arrest of anyone connected to this matter.' 'There must be a thorough investigation,' he added.

Ex-Delhi Cop Among 4 Held In Punjab Jewellery Heist, Learnt To Disguise Himself From YouTube Videos
The police recovered a substantial haul of stolen items, comprising 120 grams of gold, 500 grams of silver, and Rs 8 lakh in cash from the suspects Punjab Police have apprehended four individuals, including a former Delhi Police officer, in connection with a brazen daylight robbery at a jeweller's shop in Dhakoli on July 11. The police recovered a substantial haul of stolen items, comprising 120 grams of gold, 500 grams of silver, and Rs 8 lakh in cash from the suspects. The arrested individuals have been identified as Delhi residents Amit Shukla, Vijay Kamal, Akash Sharma, and Ravinder Tyagi. Zirakpur Superintendent of Police, Jaspinder Singh Gill, detailed the suspects' criminal backgrounds and their sophisticated methods. Amit Shukla, identified as the main accused, is already implicated in two prior cases of robbery and criminal conspiracy. The most shocking revelation pertains to Vijay Kamal, a former Delhi Police officer dismissed after his involvement in a kidnapping case. Kamal, who has a notorious history with eight registered cases of theft and robbery, is considered the mastermind behind several jewellery heists. Investigations revealed that Kamal went to great lengths to avoid detection during the Dhakoli robbery. To disguise himself, he meticulously learned to tie a turban using YouTube tutorials, a detail underscoring his cunning. Police disclosed that Kamal's criminal strategy involved a systematic reconnaissance process, where he tracked and observed jewellers for a period before carrying out the robbery. This premeditated approach allowed the gang to strike with precision. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
