Man arrested on suspicion of murder after elderly couple die in alleged arson attack in St Helens
Peter Eric Greener, 77 - known as Eric - and his partner Sheila Jackson, 83, died after they were pulled from the blaze on South John Street in St Helens at around 12:40am on 15 July.
They were both taken to hospital but Eric died on 16 July, while Sheila died just a day later.
A joint investigation between Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was carried out following the incident where it was determined an accelerant was used to start the fire maliciously.
Merseyside Police say in the early hours of Sunday 20 July, a 31-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of Murder. He has been taken into custody for questioning.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson, Senior Investigating Officer, said: 'Although an arrest has been made, I would like to take this opportunity to remind people to pass on information directly to police or anonymously via Crimestoppers, and not to comment or post in any way which jeopardises this ongoing work.'Extensive enquiries continue, and to that end we are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward, particularly if you live in the area of South John Street and recall seeing or hearing anything suspicious at around the time of the incident.
"Please do not assume what you know has already been reported to us, as we can quickly make that assessment.'

Two arrested as £74k drugs haul recovered in Edinburgh
A quantity of cash was also recovered during a search of a property. Two people have been arrested after a five-figure haul of drugs was recovered in Edinburgh. Police in the capital stopped and searched a 21-year-old man in Hailesland Grove, in the Wester Hailes area on Friday, August 8. He was allegedly found to be in possession of cannabis. Liverpool police given extra stop and search powers for city centre
Police have said they will use extra stop and search powers in Liverpool city Section 60 order - to run until 16:00 BST - is intended "not to stop people going about their lawful business but to deter crime or serious violence", Merseyside Police order gives police enhanced powers to search vehicles and seize dangerous items or face coverings. Merseyside Police has not stated why the order was being brought in, but protests and counter-demonstrations about the use of hotels to house asylum seekers were expected to take place in the city centre. Woman ‘repeatedly sexually assaulted by man on board London train' – as cops release CCTV image
COPS are hunting for a man after a woman was allegedly "repeatedly" sexually assaulted on a train. The attack reportedly took place on board a train from Barnes Bridge to Vauxhall, London, on May 13 at around 4.40pm. British Transport Police confirmed a man "repeatedly" sexually assaulted a woman on the train. He then left at Vauxhall railway station, said cops. Images have now been released of a man who officers believe may have information that could help with their investigation. The CCTV images show a bald man with a dark coloured beard wearing a black hoodie.
