North Korean leader Kim presides over key party meeting, state media says
SEOUL, June 24 (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over the 12th plenary meeting of the eighth central committee of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, state media reported on Tuesday.
The meeting held between Saturday and Monday reviewed the implementation of party and state policies for this year, KCNA reported.
"The plenary meeting discussed...the issues of radically accelerating the revitalization and modernization of major industrial sectors of the national economy," the report said.
A decision on convening the Ninth Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea was approved and measures were taken to hold it, KCNA added. The report did not say when it would be held.
Leader Kim also made a speech at the meeting, it said without disclosing the content.

Japan PM Ishiba says focus for defence budget should not be a numerical target
TOKYO, June 23 (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Monday that it was important to build up the necessary defence budget for Japan, while stressing that a numerical target for the budget should not be prioritised. "We shouldn't be focusing on a numerical target for defense budget such as the size relative to GDP," Ishiba told a press conference following media reports that President Donald Trump's administration was demanding that its Asian allies, including Japan, spend 5% of GDP on defence. But it's also "natural to coordinate with our ally, the United States," in building up the defense budget, he said.
