Groundbreaking cancer treatment which ‘destroys tumours with sound' to be rolled out on NHS

NHS patients will be the first in Europe to benefit from a pioneering new cancer treatment which uses ultrasound to destroy tumours.
The technology, known as histotripsy, offers a non-invasive treatment capable of breaking down liver cancer tissue without surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, with minimal damage to the surrounding organs, according to the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).
First approved by US regulators in October 2023, histotripsy uses pulsed sound waves to create 'bubble clouds' from gases present in the targeted tissue and tumour.
When these bubbles pop, within microseconds, a shockwave is released which is capable of breaking up a mass and killing cancerous cells, while avoiding the harms of radiation and reducing the risks of bleeding, infection, and damage to surrounding non-targeted tissue.
Treatment is delivered via a single session – potentially taking just 30 minutes – with limited or no pain, a quick recovery, and can be performed as a day case, according to the DHSC.
The first NHS patients are set to be treated this summer at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where the technology – which uses a device called an Edison System, created by US firm HistoSonics – is being debuted after a donation from the Li Ka Shing Foundation.
Cancer Research UK describes liver cancer as the 17th most common cancer in the UK and the 8th most frequent cause of cancer death. More than 8,000 people received a new diagnoses in 2022, with liver cancer incidence across the UK having surged by 42 per cent over the past decade, according to the British Liver Trust.
So far, more than 1,500 patients worldwide have received treatment using histotripsy, mainly in the United States – following approval by the US Food and Drug Administration in late 2023.
According to 12-month follow-up data from HistoSonics' previous clinical trials, which involved patients for whom other treatments had been either unsuccessful or unavailable, overall survival rates after one year were 73.3 per cent for primary liver cancer, and 48.6 per cent for those with secondary tumours.
The paper, published in the Annals of Surgery journal in April, noted that both tumour control and survival rates were similar to those among other current treatments.
The UK's new device is expected to be fully installed in Cambridge later this year, where it will be used initially to treat patients with primary and secondary liver tumours.
Wider research on how this could potentially treat tumours in other organs – such as the pancreas and kidneys – is underway.
The technology has been approved in the UK via the innovative devices access pathway, which aims to enable faster approvals of medical devices and treatments which evidence shows are safe, efficient and can fill unmet need.
'This is a strong example of smart, agile regulation in action,' said James Pound, of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). 'It's a major step forward for patients with liver cancer and shows how the UK can be a frontrunner in supporting responsible innovation that meets real clinical need.'
While 'regulation is vital to protect patients', the government is 'slashing red tape, so game-changing new treatments reach the NHS front line quicker – transforming healthcare', said health secretary Wes Streeting.
Hailing histotripsy as 'an exciting new technology that will make a huge difference to patients', Roland Sinker, chief executive of Cambridge University Hospitals, said: 'By offering this non-invasive, more targeted treatment we can care for more people as outpatients and free up time for surgeons to treat more complex cases.
'The faster recovery times mean patients will be able to return to their normal lives more quickly, which will also reduce pressure on hospital beds, helping us ensure that patients are able to receive the right treatment at the right time.'
Fiona Carey, a kidney cancer patient who co-chairs Cambridge's patient advisory group, added: 'This is seriously good news. A new, non-invasive option to treat these cancers is very welcome indeed.
'For patients for whom ordinary surgery is no longer an option, this could make all the difference.'

The highest-ever proportion of organ donors in the UK last year were over the age of 50, according to officials. However, only one in four people on the organ donation register are 50 or over, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) said. NHSBT analysis found there were 932 donors aged above 50 last year, making up 63% of all people who donated organs after death – the highest-ever proportion. It is now calling for more people in the age group to sign the NHS Organ Donor Register. Anthony Clarkson, director for organ and tissue donation and transplantation at NHSBT, said: 'We know from research many people aged over 50 mistakenly think they're too old to donate or that their health might stop them donating. 'However, more and more research shows that organs from older donors are lifesaving. 'The reality is the over-50s are more important to organ donation than ever. There is no age limit to organ and tissue donation, and people die every day waiting for a transplant.' According to NHSBT, the rise could be down to the ageing population, public awareness of organ donation, new techniques and more research which shows that organs from older donors can be successfully used. Nick Beresford, from London, became an organ donor at 57. He was working as the resident representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Georgia in July 2023 when he had a brain haemorrhage. His kidneys and liver were donated and transplanted into three recipients: a man in his fifties, a woman in her sixties, and another woman in her fifties. Mr Beresford's wife Angela, 51, a pilates instructor, said: 'Nick spent his whole life helping people living in extreme poverty, people with disabilities and the marginalised. He was a truly good and generous man. He was a fantastic dad and the love of my life. 'Being a donor gives others that chance, that's probably the most beautiful thing a person can do. 'I would definitely encourage other people over 50 to join the NHS Organ Donor Register – you could still save lives if something happens.' Margaret Humphries, from Richmond in London, also donated both kidneys after a brain haemorrhage aged 65. Husband John, a retired manager, said: 'My darling wife was a very giving person. Margaret's two children from her first marriage and I all agreed that donation was the right decision. 'Margaret was an absolute angel. It was very fitting that her last action would be to save somebody else.' Mr Clarkson added: 'Your organs don't need to be the same as when you in your 20s – if someone will die without a transplant, a healthy organ from someone over 50 will be a lifesaver.'

THE Minister for Health today paid a visit to a hospital in Dudley to see firsthand how artificial intelligence (AI) is leading to 'faster treatment and improved outcomes' for patients. Stephen Kinnock visited Russells Hall Hospital today (August 12), where he spoke to staff and patients to explore how the organisation is successfully using the latest technology to help patients receive care faster. The Minister's visit included a demonstration of the 'RapidAI' technology in the hospital's stroke unit, which speeds up the triage process for stroke patients by providing instant access to diagnostic imaging, accompanied by preliminary reports for clinicians to quickly verify and act upon – significantly improving response times and outcomes. The technology also flags suspected strokes in patients that may not show traditional clinical signs, such as speech problems or a droopy face or eye, helping to deliver life-saving treatment faster. The use of technology is part of the government's 10 Year Health Plan, which aims to shift the NHS from analogue to digital systems and share best practice across the whole NHS. Since its implementation at Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust in May 2024, AI technology has meant that patients are able to receive this diagnosis within 40–60 minutes, up to an hour faster than without the technology. Mr Kinnock said: 'Today I visited Russells Hall Hospital to hear how patients and staff are already feeling the benefits of our work as we shift care in the NHS from analogue to digital. 'This use of AI can slash the time between someone showing symptoms of stroke to getting treatment by up to an hour – a potentially lifesaving improvement. When it comes to strokes, every second counts. 'Artificial intelligence and digital tech are central to our 10 Year Health Plan, helping patients be seen faster to improve outcomes so they can get home sooner. The plan is all about taking the best of the NHS to the rest of the NHS. 'Our Plan for Change will deliver an NHS that is fit for the future, rolling out new technologies, such as these, helping us to modernise the NHS.' Diane Wake, Chief Executive of the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, added: 'Using artificial intelligence is making a real difference to how quickly we can diagnose and treat patients – especially in critical areas like stroke care. It's helping our teams make faster decisions, improve outcomes, and spend more time with the people who need them most. 'Innovations like this, along with our Paediatric Virtual Ward, show how digital technology is helping us give patients the best possible care, closer to home and with less time in hospital.' The Minister also visited the Paediatric Virtual Ward, which allows children suffering from illnesses such as asthma or RSV to receive care in the comfort of their home through digital pathways. Patients who need monitoring but don't require acute care can return home through the virtual ward, where their family or carers can comfortably monitor and share their vitals through tablet devices that provide consistent contact with the hospital's virtual ward team. Over the past year, the virtual ward has treated over 500 patients and saved almost 2,000 bed days.

On 4 August 2025, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) began the roll-out of the world's first gonorrhea vaccination programme. Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is often asymptomatic but can be characterised by unusual discharge from the penis or vagina and pain when urinating. Gay and bisexual men with a recent history of multiple sexual partners or bacterial STIs in the past 12 months are now eligible for a free vaccine. The vaccine, 4CMenB, is already being used to protect against meningitis B. According to the UK's Department of Health and Social Care, offering it to vulnerable populations will protect 100,000 people from the gonorrhea infection over the next decade, relieving pressure on the NHS's sexual health services and saving an estimated £7.9 million ($10.5 million). In 2023, recorded cases of gonorrhea reached an all-time peak in the UK with 85,000 diagnoses — three times higher than in 2012, emphasising the rapid growth in incidence, according to the UK Health Security Agency. Gonorrhea is treated with an antibiotic injection, which typically relieves symptoms in a few days. However, antibiotic-resistant strains have begun to emerge, meaning that rollout of the vaccine has come at a crucial time. According to the UK's Minister for Public Health, Ashley Dalton: 'Rolling out this world-leading gonorrhea vaccination programme in sexual health clinics in England represents a major breakthrough in preventing an infection that has reached record levels. This government's world-first vaccination programme will help turn the tide on infections, as well as tackling head-on the growing threat of antibiotic resistance.' Physicians need to emphasise that while vulnerable populations, such as gay and bisexual men, are being encouraged to seek vaccination, these groups should be reminded that precautions such as condoms should still be used to prevent the transmission of other sexually transmitted diseases.
