Vyttila Hub repair finally begins after 1.5 years; Nature Park, better amenities on the way

KOCHI: At long last, commuters and bus operators at the Vyttila Mobility Hub can heave a sigh of relief. The Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML) has started repairing the carriageway of the hub, which had been lying dilapidated for nearly 1.5 years.
According to a senior official, CSML has carried out a compaction test of the soil — called California Bearing Ratio (CBR) — before going ahead with the renovation.
'The tiling will be changed entirely. We will also improve the amenities for commuters, including seating arrangements, bathrooms, lighting, fan, waste bins, etc,' the CSML official said.
The authorities aim to complete the work by September first week.
'The ground already has a layer of appropriate material, and it will be adequate to prevent sinkage in the future,' the official said.
He also pointed out that the undulations on the carriageway due to ground sinking, as the hub was built on marshy land, will not happen in future. Once the maintenance is over, in three months, the CSML authorities will start setting up an open park behind the hub, along the course of the Kaniyampuzha river. The project includes the development of a walkway with natural landscaping and stone benches for passengers to relax. It will also have play equipment for children.
While the entire project cost amounts to Rs 9.56 crore, the open space development is being carried out at an estimated cost of Rs 5.43 crore.
'A key aspect of the project is the development of a 5.5-acre space behind the 13 bus bays into a green landscape where passengers can unwind.
The planned 'Nature Park' will have two separate recreational areas, sculpture gallery, play area, activity area, food kiosk, wide walkway, granite seating along the riverbank, and uniform lighting,' the official said.

Hubballi Airport leads in solar power generation among AAI airports

1 2 3 Hubballi: The Hubballi Airport, where an 8MW solar power plant was installed in Dec 2022, has emerged as the highest power-generating among Airport Authority of India (AAI) airports in the country. It produces 8MW of electricity per day, meeting its own needs before supplying excess power to other state airports. It's also said that Hubballi Airport is the first AAI-run facility in the country to export solar-generated power to multiple establishments. Rupesh Kumar Sripad, director of Hubballi Airport, told TOI that Hubballi is India's first airport-based solar plant supplying renewable energy to multiple airports. "The plant generated 2.4 crore units of power in the last two years. We saved Rs 12.4 crore that was supposed to be paid as the electricity bill for all AAI establishments in Karnataka. AAI establishments like Ballari Radar Station, Bengaluru Gagan Air-navigation monitoring station, Bengaluru-Devanahalli Airport-AAI staff residential colony, and Mangalore Airport AAI staff residential colony benefit from the Hubballi solar plant, whose project cost was Rs 33.2 crore," he explained. He further said, "Revenue generated from balanced energy after feeding to AAI establishments in Karnataka is Rs 2.1 crore." Sources added that the airport is selling electricity to KPTCL, earning over Rs one crore annually, while saving around Rs 3.6 crore in power bills every year. Earlier, Belagavi and Hubballi airports were shortlisted for the setting up of a solar plant, and Hubballi was preferred based on its weather history. The plant is installed by Madhav Infra Project Limited of Gujarat under the Sustainable Green Airport Mission, in an area of 38 acres, offsetting an estimated 2.1 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions during its lifespan. Thanks to such a green effort, the airport was honoured with the Platinum In The Green Airport Recognition-2025 award, meant for global green airports, in April, by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific and Middle East. Maha cabinet approves Rs 18 crore to make air travel from Solapur to Pune & Mumbai feasible

Kolhapur: The state cabinet approved Rs 18 crore to ensure air travellers from Solapur can travel to Pune and Mumbai at a subsidised rate of Rs 3,240 per seat, covering 100% of the operational cost of the service. The refurbished Solapur airport commenced flight operations with the Solapur-Goa route. However, despite several efforts, airline operators were hesitant to provide regular air services from Solapur to Mumbai and Pune, citing unaffordable ticket prices as the airport is not included in the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme for regional connectivity. To make air travel between Solapur and Pune and Solapur and Mumbai viable, state govt decided to grant a subsidy per seat to offset operational losses and make air travel affordable for people. "For one year, govt will provide a viability gap funding subsidy of Rs 3,240 per seat with a total budget of Rs 17.9 crore. After one year, the airport will come under the UDAN scheme and, thereafter, the state will grant 20% of the travel fares as per the UDAN scheme guidelines, and the viability gap funding will cease to exist," said the cabinet decision. A Goa-based airline currently operates flights on four days of the week — Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — from the Solapur airport. The flight lands at Mopa airport. A senior airport official said, "The discussions are on with other private air service providers to start services for connecting flights between Solapur, Pune, and Mumbai. The mid-size airplane (60 seater) will be deployed along the routes." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Nashik civic body's city bus service records highest-ever daily income of Rs 44 lakh in ticket sales

Nashik: The Nashik Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd, the transport wing of the Nashik Municipal Corporation, recorded an income of Rs 44 lakh on Aug 12 (Monday) through the sale of tickets, marking the highest daily income since operations began in July 2021. Over 1.1 lakh passengers travelled by city buses on Aug 12, which was the third Monday of the Shravan month. The previous highest daily earning was Rs 35.4 lakh, recorded on Sept 4, 2023, during the Shravan month that year. The third Shravan Somwar is a major event that attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees to Trimbakeshwar, home to one of India's 12 Jyotirlingas. Pilgrims from across the country visit the temple and take a holy dip in the Kushawarta kund. "We deployed more buses on the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar route on the occasion of the third Shravan Somwar on Aug 12, and all the buses that ran on the route were fully occupied. This is the reason the city bus service recorded the highest daily earnings through the sale of tickets with a footfall of 1.14 lakh passengers," said Pradeep Chaudhari, the additional commissioner of NMC and CEO of the NMPML. NMC took over the city bus service from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) on July 8, 2021, deploying 27 buses on 11 routes with an initial footfall of 5,000 passengers per day and an average daily income of Rs 1.3lakh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo There has been a significant rise in passenger occupancy over the past four years. The footfall has reached an average of 70,000 passengers per day, and income has increased to an average of Rs 21 lakh per day, according to NMC officials. Most commuters regularly use the city bus service, with some opting for buses over personal vehicles to reach their workplaces. Additionally, the number of students obtaining bus passes at concessional rates has risen in recent months. NMPML operates a total of 250 buses across the city through two private agencies on a procure, operate, and maintain basis. In addition to 60 routes, NMC operates city buses in rural areas such as Trimbakeshwar, Pimpalgaon, Sinnar, Ozar, Sayyad Pimpri, Mohadi, Saikheda, and other nearby rural destinations, covering nearly 27 bus terminals, two bus depots, and 1,440 bus stops in both urban and nearby rural areas.
