GAA club selling commemorative Shane MacGowan jerseys ahead of All-Ireland clash
Priced at €54, Shannon Rovers GAA Club are selling the blue and yellow jerseys, with the late Pogues singer's face emblazoned across the bottom.
In a statement on their Facebook page, Shannon Rovers GAA Club wrote: 'We have had a lot of people looking to get their hands on the Tipperary Shane MacGowan Commemorative jerseys as Tipp enter the All-Ireland series next weekend.
'Hopefully we will get a few days out in Croke Park and an opportunity to wear our commemorative jerseys.
'To answer the call, we will now be selling our jerseys in a number of locations from this Monday coming. Check out the poster for more info.
"We will also have a pop up shop for one day only in Nenagh (beside Easons) on Saturday June 14th. Please note stock is limited!
'As always you can still order online through our web-shop. Alan Tynan, O' Reilly Sports and of course the Tipperary senior hurling team are showing off the commemorative jersey in the image.'
Shane's sister Siobhan also backed the initiative.
She recently opened up in a YouTube documentary called The Local about Shane's love for Tipperary and how Ireland 'shaped' his identity.
She said Shane – who died in November 2023 – found Ireland's way of life much easier to live in.
She said: 'I think if Shane would describe his connection to Nenagh in Tipperary to people that he just had loved them since he was a child like you know, I think that Shane's connection to Tipperary and Ireland in general, really shaped Shane's identity, because when we were in England, dad made it very clear to us that we were Irish.
'We weren't brought up as English, so we had a lot of Irish culture in England, even so, between music and books and the culture exposed to at home.
'But when Shane came over to Ireland, I think he really fit in. He found the way of life much easier.
'He didn't like the strictness in school, I suppose, everywhere, but the schools in England were very strict. Life was more strict, more structured, more ordered. And he actually loved the freedom of Tipperary and the easiness of the Irish people.'

1995 Banteer hurler reunion A reunion for the winning 1995 Banteer Junior Hurlers takes place on Friday 29th August at 8.30pm at the Glen Theatre. The Banteer team won the Duhallow hurling title after an absence of 38 years with the previous title being won in 1957 when Banteer hurlers won the 3 in a row. It is hoped that all of the 1995 team will attend on the night and tickets are available now at 10e each for anyone who wishes to attend and tickets must be bought beforehand. Light refreshments will be provided on the night and old videos will also be shown of the match and social from that year. Sportsfield appeal rates decision Taillte Ireland has proposed property rates on the new Sportsfield facility which has a community café, community museum and a community digital hub/meeting room. The local community group is contesting this proposal with the support of local public representatives and have requested that no rates be applied. This facility is community built, community owned and community operated. Any extra income is put back into additional community facilities at the centre. The community has had to raise over 650k via local fundraising, a bank loan, company sponsorship, selling tickets etc to complete the recent 2.2M community project. Over 300k of this total 2.2M expenditure alone was also paid in Vat payments to our Government for the construction of this project. This project also helps to improve the social isolation for our community as it's now a meeting point since we now have no shop or post office left in Banteer village. The whole facility is run with the assistance of volunteers from our community ADVERTISEMENT Any excess income generated is poured back into paying off our loan and into the maintenance of the existing facilities as well as development of additional facilities for our community. The Valuation Act maintains the long-standing position that all properties of occupiers that operate with the intention of making a profit are ratable, so the opposite should then apply in our case i.e. all properties of occupiers that operate as not for profit should not be ratable. In the Sportsfield the community café, community museum and community digital hub/meeting room activities and all the other facilities are all not for profit and are conducted to fund the rate exempt activity on land developed for sport and recreation including outdoor surfaces, football pitches,walks,playgrounds etc. The community not-for-profit sector plays a vital role in Irish society and community facilities such as ours are a very important element of a sustainable Rural Ireland. To reinforce our appeal all our activities are purely not for profit and the group have also surveyed many other similar community facilities in Cork County and ALL of these are not paying rates. Lyre Junior A Football Lyre enjoyed a well deserved win at the start of their 2025 Junior Football C'ship campaign with a victory over Lismire at Tullylease on Saturday evening last. Played in ideal conditions Lyre were disappointingly slow to get out of the scoring traps trailing 0-3 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. Eventually the men in white & black found their scoring range though hitting four points without reply through the boots of Alan Coughlan (3) & Cathal O' Donoghue to lead 0-4 to 0-3 after 18 minutes. Both teams exchanged pointed frees before an excellent move in the 23rd minute involving Ruairi O' Connell, Liam O' Brien & O' Donoghue saw the latter under pressure curl the ball into the top left hand corner of the Lismire goal to give Lyre a 1-5 to 0-4 double scores lead. Lismire narrowed the divide with a brace of points before two more Coughlan frees saw Lyre out in front 1-7 to 0-6 at the short whistle. The second half saw Lyre continue where they left off scoring four points without reply through Coughlan (3) & an O' Connell effort from distance. Such was the dominance of the Lyre defense Lismire failed to score until the 48th minute of the second half. However an O' Donoghue two pointer along with points from Coughlan & substitute Jack Finnegan boosted the Lyre cause. Lyre were also grateful to net minder Luke Philpott on making a point blank save on 55 minutes to deny Lismire a certain goal. However the men in yellow & black did receive a lifeline on 59 minutes with an excellently converted penalty reducing the divide between the sides, the score now 1-15 to 1-7. Both teams again exchanged points one last time but it was always going to be Lyres day & a victory with a margin of eight points, 1-16 to 1-8, did not flatter the winners. This entender grant scheme by TLI is to provide 6 fast chargers on or within 3km of the N72 Fermoy to Killarney road. Lismire Football Championship Lismire footballers went under to Lyre in the first round of the Ashgrove Renewables Junior Football Championship last Saturday evening in Tullylease. Their inability to fully grasp the new rules with the ball being advanced on numerous occasions to point scoring opportunities for the opposition was a key factor in their downfall. That coupled with inaccurate shooting led Lyre to a 1.16 to 1.08 victory. Match report in sports pages. Wexford awarded funding of €150,000 to support Fleadh preparations
The Fleadh, which is widely regarded as the world's largest annual celebration of traditional Irish music, language, song and dance, will return to Wexford again on Sunday, August 3 to Sunday, August 10 this year. Speaking on the allocation of funds, Wexford native and The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD said that he has great local pride for the festival. "I can't wait myself for the Fleadh. It's a class event in terms of the focus on community and voluntary led events, showcasing our local pride with a burst of colour and sound,' he said. 'The Fleadh in Wexford is celebrating the living tradition, and has really focused on making performances and spaces accessible to a wide group of people of all ages and backgrounds. Even just getting to sit in on some of the competitions of every type of instrument is deadly. That's what the festival is best at. I want to acknowledge the trojan work of all the teams across Wexford County Council in hosting the Fleadh Cheoil.' He highlighted the major impact the Fleadh has on Irish and local tourism as well. "The Fleadh is a welcome boost for our local tourism, and will attract thousands visitors from home and abroad to the county. This funding I am an announcing today aims to assist the Council in ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place to facilitate another successful Fleadh, which sees such a serious effort from all parts of the county,' he added. Similar funding of €150,000 was provided to Wexford County Council for the Fleadh Cheoil in 2024 last year, which saw great success with an estimated 650,000 joining in on the festivities.

Horse racing tips: ‘He goes on any ground and arrives after a personal best' – Templegate's 5-1 NAP
TEMPLEGATE takes on Friday's racing from Glorious Goodwood confident of success after banging in a 28-1 treble on Thursday. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. Advertisement FIFTH COLUMN (2.30 Goodwood, nap) John Gosden has a nice three-year-old on his hands in this son of Kingman. He showed promise last season and got off the mark in a Kempton maiden on comeback in April. That form was quickly left behind with a smooth handicap success at Sandown - before an excellent effort in the Britannia at Royal Ascot. He was only seventh in that hot contest but he was first home in his group getting the worst of the draw. He clocked a personal best when winning at Newmarket last time and relishes this mile trip. He goes on any ground so it won't matter what the weather does. BIG MOJO (3.05 Goodwood, nb) Likes it here and can show his class in the King George Qatar Stakes. Advertisement DIEGO VENTURA (1.55 Goodwood, treble) He is just about the only runner in the field who is proven in testing conditions - and looks set to get just that. Templegate's TV verdicts 1.20 Advertisement Most read in Horse Racing Exclusive KYLE OF LOCHALSH is fancied to go three better than last year's fourth and land this marathon prize. He's on the same mark, handles any ground and shaped with promise on his reappearance. He's much more lightly raced than 12 months ago and looks primed to peak. Aggagio loves it round here and was impressive under Ashley Lewis last time but stamina beyond 2m remains a question mark. Advertisement Align The Stars hasn't quite fired this year but ran well in a strong Royal Ascot handicap and is lurking on a handy mark. He has a good record here but came up short in this last year. Tashkhan is classy and thrives in deep ground should it rain, with similar comments applying to Zinc White. Sheradann has been knocking on the door and shapes as though this trip will suit. Advertisement Irish raider Mordor is interesting as this stamina test could bring improvement. 1.55 DIEGO VENTURA is just about the only runner in the field who is proven in testing conditions. James Doyle's mount has been running well at Listed level in France and scored over seven furlongs at Longchamp in May. Advertisement He then went well at Epsom before going down in a bunch finish at Chantilly last time. Conditions will be ideal and he has more to come. Cosmic Year has shown his best on good ground as he showed when second in the Irish 2,000 Guineas which is strong form. The ground may not be ideal but this is a fair drop in class which makes him a player. Advertisement King Of Cities has been placed on tacky ground and sees out this trip well. He has yet to win this season but could go well under Ryan Moore. Seagulls Eleven was a solid second to non-runner Opera Ballo at Newmarket last time. He's unproven on this ground and needs a step forward. Advertisement 2.30 FIFTH COLUMN can take another step up for the Gosdens. His only defeat this season came when a strong-finishing seventh in the Britannia at Royal Ascot, where he won his group and shaped like the best horse on the far side. He confirmed that when winning stylishly at Newmarket last time, and a 3lb penalty might not be enough to anchor this improving three-year-old who can beat his elders. Advertisement Skukuza is the main threat. He's officially 8lb well in after two smooth wins at The Curragh, including a Listed last time, and is clearly thriving. Greek Order ran a screamer in the Royal Hunt Cup on his first start back from the US and again shaped well at Sandown behind Arisaig who is a contender here. He's a big player if things fall right. Ebt's Guard has run well here before and wasn't beaten far in the Royal Hunt Cup. Advertisement 3.05 BIG MOJO can follow up last year's Glorious Goodwood win in the King George Qatar Stakes. Mick Appleby's flyer ran a cracker at Newmarket last time and looks up to this level. Aussie Asfoora will show her true colours here after a poor Ascot run, while She's Quality lives up to her name. Advertisement Here's my guide to the field, where I rate them one (worst) to five (best): ASFOORA 4 FOOR star. Aussie raider won the King Charles III at Royal Ascot last year was just denied in this. Had excuses this year and could bounce back. BIG MOJO 5 Advertisement BIG chance. Won Molecomb here last year and has progressed at three. Unlucky in the Commonwealth Cup and ran a huge race in the July Cup. Strong claims back at 5f. CELANDINE 2 HARD Cel. Chased home Big Mojo in last year's Molecomb and beat Time For Sandals over 6f at York. Needs to prove she enjoys 5f as much. CLARENDON HOUSE 1 Advertisement DON for. Has run well over this C&D before but was poor at Epsom last time and needs more at this level. FROST AT DAWN 3 HOT Frost. Won 6f Listed race earlier this season and showed real speed when second in the King Charles III at Royal Ascot. Can go close again. JM JUNGLE 2 Advertisement JUNGLE fever. Won over C&D at this meeting in 2023 and landed the Epsom Dash in June. Ran well in Listed last time but not up to this. KERDOS 3 TAKE Ker. Fifth in this race last year and good run in the King Charles III. Likes tacky ground and cheekpieces may help. KHAADEM 3 Advertisement KHA motors. Won this in 2022 and has landed two Group 1s. He's unbeaten in two runs here and looks a big place price. MANACCAN 1 DANGER Man. Solid Listed performer over this trip but has been struggling for a while. NIGHT RAIDER 3 Advertisement NIGHT shifts. Unbeaten in four AW starts including a Listed 6f at Newcastle. Turf form not as hot but it's early days. SHE'S QUALITY 4 QUALITY pays. Ran a stormer when second in a hot Group 2 at Haydock in May. Sandown didn't suit last time and this test looks much more suitable. SPARTAN ARROW 2 Advertisement BLUNT arrow. Has improved since sporting cheekpieces and took a French Listed prize latest. Goes well here and track/trip suits but this is much tougher opposition. TIME FOR SANDALS 3 TIME trial. Surprise winner of the Commonwealth Cup over 6f at Ascot. Could improve again but drop in trip an unknown. TOWN AND COUNTRY 1 Advertisement TOWN and out. Few miles on the clock and is a Listed winner over this trip. Progressive but needs a lot more in this company. 3.45 SOCIALITE can get the party started. Charlie Hills' four-year-old can take this prize with a bold front-running show. Advertisement He quickened smartly to win at Windsor on handicap debut, shaping as though this extra furlong would suit. Lightly raced, progressive and effective on any ground, he could prove tough to pass from a handy draw. Liberty Lane is the main danger, with a soft-ground Cambridgeshire win and a Listed success here this year marking him out as a serious player. Haunted Dream won this race last year and had excuses at Royal Ascot. He's a big threat back at this track. Advertisement Godwinson is thriving after wins in the Lincoln and at Newcastle. He'll be right there if liking this longer trip. Fox Legacy is flying and isn't written off provided the rain stays away.
