A Piedmont wealth manager left his wife and a dying man at scene of hit-and-run. Now he wants his license back

A Piedmont wealth manager convicted of a deadly hit-and-run is fighting to get his driver's license reinstated.
Attorneys for Timothy Hamano say the 68-year-old man has already served a mandatory three-year period without his driving privileges, and should be allowed to resume a normal life. But their request drew fervent resistance from family members of Gregory Turnage, the man Hamano struck and killed on Mother's Day in 2021.
It's the latest chapter in an unusually complicated case that's produced two starkly different narratives. Hamano's lawyers say their client's life was upended by a tragic accident that he regrets every day. Turnage's bereaved relatives, by contrast, see Hamano as an avatar of wealth and power, maneuvering through a justice system where money buys better outcomes. Losing his ability to drive was the only 'real punishment' Hamano ever received, wrote Turnage's partner, Angie Brey, in a searing July letter to the Alameda County court.
'If you take a life with your car, I don't think you should get your license back,' Brey told the Chronicle. 'That's where I stand.'
The crash occurred on May 9, 2021, when police said Hamano plowed his white Lexus into a parked SUV on leafy Park Boulevard in Oakland. He struck Turnage, who was walking on the sidewalk, with a force strong enough to throw the 41-year-old man over the hood of the Lexus and then back onto the pavement. As Turnage lay bleeding, witnesses said, Hamano opened his door and walked around the crumpled front bumper, looking down at the gravely injured man.
He then fled on foot, leaving Turnage behind, as well as his wife, who sat in the front passenger seat of the Lexus behind a deployed airbag. Hamano turned himself in the next day after Oakland police issued a warrant for his arrest. Although restaurant receipts obtained by police indicate that he had been drinking prior to the crash, prosecutors lacked sufficient evidence to charge him with driving while intoxicated.
Last year Hamano pled no contest to felony vehicular manslaughter and fleeing the scene of an accident, receiving a sentence of six years' home detention with an ankle monitor. Under California law, defendants typically serve half the time to which they are sentenced, so Hamano spent three years confined to his house in Piedmont. The conditions of his $125,000 bail barred him from driving or drinking alcohol, but owing to a clerical error, court staff failed to report his conviction to the Department of Motor Vehicles. The error was first reported by Cal Matters.
Out of the hundreds of mandatory DMV notifications that Alameda County court has sent since 2019, Hamano's was one of two that slipped, according to court spokesperson Paul Rosynsky. When court officials learned of the mistake, Rosynsky said, they 'immediately rectified the situation,' creating a new quandary.
By then Hamano had successfully re-applied for his license, only to have the DMV revoke it on May 28. His attorney, Colin Cooper, subsequently filed a motion for the court to 'set aside' the DMV's order. In a recent interview, Cooper emphasized that this penalty seemed to come out of nowhere: The case has long been resolved, he noted, and months have passed since Hamano settled a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of Turnage and Brey's son, Miles.
'If someone commits this crime (of vehicular manslaughter) and admits to it, then part of the punishment, by statute, is that you can't drive for three years,' Cooper said. 'I think that's appropriate. And I think that occurred here. We abided by the tenor of the law.'
But Brey maintains that Hamano poses a threat to public safety, and contends that he shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel. In her letter to the court, she cited a subsequent collision in Oakland that Hamano reported to his insurance carrier in May. Cooper said his client was hit by another car and the other driver was at fault.

WNBA sex-toy incidents may be linked to online cryptocurrency group's scheme

A growing series of incidents involving lime green sex toys being thrown onto WNBA courts appears to be connected to an online campaign by a cryptocurrency group attempting to boost the value of a memecoin. Members of an online community promoting the token, called 'Green Dildo Coin,' discussed the stunts during a livestream on the social media platform X on Tuesday. Participants claimed there had been communication encouraging users to bring or throw the objects during WNBA games. The coin launched on July 28, the day before the first incident, when a sex toy landed on the court during a game between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream at Gateway Center Arena. On Thursday, the campaign gained further visibility when Donald Trump Jr. shared a meme on Instagram featuring an AI-generated image of President Donald Trump throwing the object from the White House roof onto a women's basketball court, two days after the elder Trump's unexplained visit to the top of the residence. The identity of those who created the memecoin or social media accounts is unclear. A request by the Chronicle for comment from the group went unanswered as of publication. The disruptions appear to have been part of a broader effort to manipulate attention and price volatility around the Green Dildo Coin. Trading activity spiked in tandem with viral video circulation. Prediction market Polymarket launched bets on whether another sex toy would be thrown at a game by Aug. 10, drawing more than $180,000 in trading volume in less than 48 hours. That possibility became reality Thursday night when a sex toy was thrown onto the court in the final seconds of the Dream-Sky game in Chicago. In a statement, WNBA Players Association Executive Director Terri Jackson said, 'the league advised the players' union that it was investigating claims that individuals were being incentivized to carry out these unsafe stunts.' WNBA players and coaches have sharply condemned the incidents, calling them misogynistic and disruptive. 'The sexualization of women is what's used to hold women down, and this is no different,' Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve told reporters on Thursday. 'These people who are doing this should be held accountable. We're not the butt of the joke, they're the problem.' There have now been seven incidents between Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix, New York and Los Angeles. Two arrests have been made in connection with the disruptions, but their connection with the memecoin is unclear. After the July 29 incident in the Valkyries game, police in College Park, Ga., arrested 23-year-old Delbert Carver over the weekend on charges of disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure, and criminal trespass. According to the police affidavit, Carver admitted, 'This was supposed to be a joke, and this joke (was) supposed to go viral.' The second event occurred on Aug. 1 when the Valkyries were in Chicago. The Chicago Police Department told the Chronicle on Thursday that there had not been any police reports filed on that incident. Another sex toy was thrown onto the court after Atlanta's game against the Phoenix Merchury on Aug. 1. On Aug. 5, there were three more incidents. The third instance of one of the objects reaching the court during the game came during the Indiana-Los Angeles game on Tuesday and nearly hit the Fever's Sophie Cunningham. The Los Angeles Police Department also told the Chronicle there had been no police report, and there was no current suspect. Social media users posted a video on X of one being confiscated at the New York Liberty game on Tuesday. The same night, Kaden Lopez, 18, allegedly threw a similar object into the crowd during the game, striking a man and his 9-year-old niece. He was arrested by Phoenix police the next day for disorderly conduct, assault and public display of explicit sexual material. 'It was just a stupid prank that was trending on social media,' Lopez told investigators, according to court documents. Before Wednesday's game between the Valkyries and Las Vegas Aces, Chase Center security offered no comment, but one security staffer told the Chronicle that they were on 'high alert.' An arena source told the Chronicle they did not encounter any thrown items during the night. A rumor was spread on social media by Polymarket ahead of Wednesday's game at Chase Center that the arena would enforce a 'no bags' policy. The team denied that to the Chronicle before the game. The Valkyries have declined to comment on the incidents and the WNBA has released just one statement on the matter, after Carver's arrest: 'The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans. In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.'

If you've recently gotten texts claiming to be from the DMV, you're not alone. Maybe you've gotten a text from an unknown number asking if you've got time to chat? Or a self-described job recruiter letting you know about a new opening? They're all included in a methods bad actor use called social engineering to coax information out of victims. To trick victims into sending over their information, scammers will try to use fear and urgency -- tactics often used to pressure people into clicking links or responding without thinking. Now, experts say these fraudsters have added AI to their toolkits. "It's basically a way of someone tricking you into doing things that they want you to do," cybersecurity expert Justin Cappos said. The New York State DMV recently issued a security alert about the increase in fake websites imitating the DMV to get personal information. New Yorkers have been receiving messages with links to these fraudulent sites, with some claiming the recipient owes money for unpaid tickets. "You can just go to the Department of Motor Vehicles site. Don't click any links in that message or do anything like that," Cappos said. "You can go there and try to find if there's a way for you to check to see if you have tickets or other stuff like that."
