'White Lotus'' Sam Nivola worries 'old movie stars' with plastic surgery are taking roles from young actors

Yahoo4 hours ago
"It's not giving any space for the young'uns to move in and make a name for themselves," says the 21-year-old season 3 breakout.
Sam Nivola thinks Hollywood is aging unusually in the 21st century — and that's not a good thing for his peers.
The 21-year-old White Lotus breakout recently reflected on the state of the entertainment industry, specifically how older generations are clinging to their stardom and taking away lead roles from younger actors.
"The old movie stars are getting plastic surgery, and they're looking younger and they're staying young," Nivola said in a new interview with Variety. "You have these really old people playing young roles. And it's not giving any space for the young'uns to move in and make a name for themselves."
The actor, who played the youngest son in a wealthy North Carolina family on season 3 of the Emmy-winning HBO series, went on to explain how he thinks the film industry might be shaken without new marquee idols. "With all due respect to those people, one day they won't be here anymore, literally," Nivola said. "And they will have to create new stars."
But Nivola offered one exception to the rule. "I think Timothée Chalamet is one of the best actors alive, and he's a total star," he said. "He's one of a very few examples I could come up with. But it's a different kind of movie star; he's not huge and jacked. He looks a little more like me."
Nivola grew up in a household of thespians — his mother, Emily Mortimer, has starred in projects like The Newsroom and Lars and the Real Girl, while his father, Alessandro Nivola, has acted in films like The Brutalist and A Most Violent Year. He also lamented how the studio system has grown more financially conservative since his parents launched their careers in the mid-1990s.
"They've Moneyball-ed the film industry!" he told Variety. "Everything is about data now — and trying to predict, to the nearest dollar, how much money a movie's going to make. It screws the idea of risk-taking."
He pointed to one major victim of that paradigm shift. "Comedy is more about risk-taking than any other genre," he said. "It's rare to have comedies at all. It's been pretty dry for a little while."
Nivola, who previously had roles in Maestro and White Noise, will soon star in one of those rare comedies: Driver's Ed, a new film from director Bobby Farrelly (Dumb and Dumber) that will also feature Ella Stiller, Alyssa Milano, Kumail Nanjiani, and Molly Shannon. He isn't the only White Lotus actor who has denounced certain cosmetic procedures. Aimee Lou Wood, who portrayed Chelsea on season 3 of the show, recently told the Run-Through With Vogue podcast why she avoids Botox.
"I'm very anti-Botox," she said. "People can do whatever the hell they want, but for myself — because, you know, a lot of my career relies on these facial expressions — I can't start freezing my face. It needs to move."

Greg Gutfeld Says ‘It Took Guts' for Jimmy Fallon to Host Him, Mocks Stephen Colbert – ‘My Uber Driver'

"I went on the show for the same reason I started this show," the "Gutfeld!" host says – "late-night needs more fun" Greg Gutfeld and Co. took a victory lap for the Fox News host's appearance last week on 'The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon,' with the consensus being that not only was it a fun moment – but something late-night culture needs more of. 'I brought fun by the gallon to our pal Jimmy Fallon,' the 'Gutfeld!' [and self-proclaimed king of late night] said on Friday night's monologue. 'It went so well all the way home I could not stop talking about it with my Uber driver [displaying a picture of 'Late Show' host Stephen Colbert.] More from TheWrap Greg Gutfeld Says 'It Took Guts' for Jimmy Fallon to Host Him, Mocks Stephen Colbert – 'My Uber Driver' | Video Bernie Sanders Says Influence of 'Very Wealthy People' Caused Kamala Harris' Defeat in 2024: 'Broken and Corrupt' | Video 'One Piece' Scores Early Season 3 Renewal at Netflix, Ian Stokes Joins Joe Tracz as Co-Showrunner Diddy Lawyer Thinks Rapper Could Align With Trump If Pardoned: 'It Would Not Surprise Me' | Video The canceled-by-May CBS host, criticized after his exit was announced for never having conservative guests, continued to get roasted as Gutfeld boasted. 'But it was nothing like the critics predicted,' Gutfeld said. 'They expected me and Mr. Evil Fox News to attack Jimmy Fallon and they were mad when I did not. But I went on the show for the same reason I started the show. Late-night needs more fun. I was a gracious guest to a nice guy and he expected me to tear into Jimmy? You were as clueless and boring as the Stephen Colbert interviewing Kamala Harris.' Gutfeld applauded Fallon for the invite – and suggested that had Colbert done the same, he, too, might be enjoying a contract extension instead of a pink slip. 'It took guts for Jimmy Fallon to have me on the show, not only because he risked criticism from the left,' Gutfeld said. 'I'm talking about this coincidence. His contract's just been renewed by NBC through 2028. You see that, Colbert? You should have had me on! And there is still time … I will even bring the tissues.' 'Gutfeld!' panelist Tom Shillue gushed about the appearance for being about anything but politics. 'To me, this was great to see and it reminded me that I think you and Fallon have a similar energy and that the model for the late-night host was always kind of detached and, you know, kind of sarcastic and above it all,' Shillue said. 'But both you and Jimmy enjoy yourselves when you're doing the show. Like you have a good time, you were always laughing at your guests, he is always enjoying his guests, so I thought it went great and I was just overjoyed to see it.' Panelist C.J. Pearson noted that it seems like conservatives are 'winning the battle': 'You going on Tonight Show, Sydney Sweeney being on the face of major fashion campaigns and not standing away from it but doubling down. … The more we do that, young people will come to our side and we will keep on winning.' Night one of the Bananas in Denver: Fans go wild for the "world's most entertaining baseball game"

The Savannah Bananas brought their trademark, banana-fueled energy to the Mile High City for an unforgettable night of baseball, stunts, and high-flying fun. From fans dressed head to toe in yellow to the infectious sounds of music and cheers, the atmosphere was electric at the sold-out event. "We're here to see the Savannah Bananas, so we are dressed up as bananas," one fan said, as the crowd waved and danced in excitement. The fans weren't the only ones celebrating. For some, Saturday night was a dream come true. "I was like, if it's meant to be, we will be here in our banana costumes. And it was," said Morgan Hill, a longtime fan. Mike Mata, who signed up for the ticket lottery two years ago, was thrilled when he got the call. "We've been wanting to see them for a while," he said. And in true Colorado fashion, even Rockies stars Vinny Castilla and Ubaldo Jimenez joined in on the fun, suiting up for the night. The Bananas delivered as promised, blending baseball with circus stunts, choreographed dances, and comedy. It's a spectacle where the tallest pitcher in the world -- on stilts -- shares the spotlight with players flipping through the air and executing daring moves. "I've seen it on TikTok, and now we get to experience it live," said one fan. The Bananas don't just play baseball; they create an all-out entertainment experience, aiming to leave fans with nothing but smiles. On the field, the motto is clear: If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong. Fans can expect another sold-out crowd Sunday, as the Bananas return for round two in Denver.

James Mardsen's Happy to Be Cyclops Again for ‘Avengers: Doomsday'

After The Marvels and Deadpool & Wolverine laid the groundwork for more Fox X-Men to return, Avengers: Doomsday is going all in by bringing back several non-Wolverine (or Professor X) characters from the original films. Among them is James Marsden, who played Cyclops in that initial trilogy and didn't really get to do much in them. Speaking to Vanity Fair, the actor recalled '20 years of listening to people say, 'When are you coming back? When are you coming back? Are you coming back?' But I'm dead, or maybe not.' Despite 'getting a little long in the tooth to put on the superhero costume,' he called getting it 'a real blast' to put the shades on again for Doomsday. Marsden was one of the first X-actors to bow out of the franchise, having been killed off early into X-Men: The Last Stand after he booked a role in Superman Returns. The last time he showed up as the always right mutant was a short cameo at the end of Days of Future Past in a new timeline, which seemed at the time to close the book on 'the firrst real event project I was ever a part of, and a very beloved character.' 'To step back into that role was pretty special,' he continued, 'and it's been a nice little homecoming to a role that really put me on the map.' Other returning X-actors for Doomsday include Alan Cumming as Nightcralwer, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Ian McKellen as Magneto. Two current, notable absences are Famke Janssen's Jean Grey and Halle Berry's Storm. With how much fun X-Men '97 had rehabilitating Cyclops into a very cool (and very flawed) hero, hopefully Marsden gets to show out when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
